Discussion John Douglas Got It Right, but He's Wrong

I watched a 1998 news segment on JonBenet's murder and came across an interview with John Douglas. I think he gets it right - all except for one thing.

He says:

  1. "If a parent kills a child, they don't want to be the one to find the child."

If one or both of the Ramseys did this, calling the police was likely part of the plan to have someone else find her. There may have also been an earlier plan to take her out of the house and have her found elsewhere.

After 7 hours of the police not finding JonBenet, John was presented with an opportunity to "search the house from top to bottom". Within minutes of being asked to search, he finds her. Fleet White is now an important witness, and John Ramsey wasn't alone when he found her.

  1. "The other thing you look at is how the child was left. When parents kill, they usually place the child in a very peaceful-type of a look to it. They stage the crime scene."

JonBenet was found wrapped in a blanket. She'd been cleaned.

Evidence strongly suggests a staged crime scene. Even IF it was an intruder, some elements of staging explain strange evidence: duct tape with a perfect set of lip prints, loose and long rope bindings over the wrist-sleeves of JonBenet's shirt, and a ransom note written by a foreign faction that didn't exist.

  1. "I'm looking at this man, Mr. Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey, if you did it, you are one hell of a liar. You are one hell of a liar, if you did it. And you're putting on a great production here.

John Ramsey would be one hell of a liar, if he did it.

  1. "But I just don't believe in my heart he did this. And not just in my heart, from what...from the analysis of the scene."

John Douglas was a highly-regarded, nationally-recognized criminal profiler who inspired Jack Crawford in "Silence of the Lambs." I wouldn't be surprised if his ego doesn't believe he can be lied to.

"I'm looking at this man, Mr. Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey, if you did it, you are one hell of a liar. You are one hell of a liar, if you did it."

Mr. Ramsey was also a hell of a salesman. Has a salesman ever lied to you and you believed him?
