IGN Chinas review on "Phantom Blade 0" takes a few shots at Western developers it seems. Thoughts?

Post image
61 Upvotes

My take here is they seem to be watching too much YouTube. People are fast to call out Western failures like Concord but will gladly ignore the -

Baulders Gate 3, Cyberpunk, Alan Wake, Control Resonant, Claire Obscure, Space Marine 2, Hades 2, Hollow Knight Silksong etc etc

I also find it ironic because China isn't exactly known for pushing out content like this.... sure it's mainly Gacha games and there's a lot of bad ones out there ...

Anyways those are my thoughts, what do you guys think?

Self Promo I'm a solo game dev in Dublin trying to recreate the magic of Black & White

Hi all, I'm Mark, a solo game dev based in Dublin. Black & White was one of my favourites as a kid, and having jumped through the hoops to play it again on modern hardware it still feels like nothing has filled the gap since. So I started making the game I wanted. It's called Godyssey.

For anyone not familiar with Black & White it's a god game where your power and influence come from people's belief in you. As they witness you perform acts they believe in you more and you become more powerful. There's a big focus on moral alignment of the gods in the game, there's good acts like providing for the people and evil acts like burning the place to the ground. One of the biggest draws is a creature who can learn to do everything you can do just by watching you, and who you can praise or scold to shape the type of being they become. There's also a big comedy factor mostly driven by your 2 advisors, an angel and a devil on your shoulders that are always squabbling.

For the Black & White heads, here's the approach I took - I wrote down two lists: what I'd keep and what I'd change.

Things to keep

  1. The creature - A blank slate you can mould into whatever you want. They can learn to do everything you can, you praise and punish them to adjust their behaviour.
  2. The advisors - A good one and a bad one, both voiced, bickering from minute one.
  3. A sense of humour - The original was funny, both systemically, from your creature and the world, and in the scripted moments with the advisors and the characters you meet.
  4. Alignment - Good and bad choices, with your hand morphing to match. The land takes on the character of whoever rules it: the grass, the sky, the sea, the villagers and the buildings. The creature has its own alignment, which changes its appearance.
  5. Systems-driven - Things happen because of rules rather than scripts. Villagers have their routines. A strong wind can blow away anything not tied down. Fire will melt something frozen, but it also spreads, so thawing something out without burning down the whole village is a puzzle in itself.

Things to change

  1. No micromanaging - Villages can look after themselves. It's up to you to mould them in your image, not to make sure they get three square meals.
  2. Avoiding the repetition - More ways to generate belief, more secrets to find, more puzzles to solve, and different paths to converting villages.
  3. Big set pieces - A kraken bending the land in two, a giant sinkhole where there used to be a village, a lighthouse that burns everything its light touches, and an out-of-control windmill that blows everyone away.
  4. More varied miracles - 30 so far. There are the simple classics like fireball and food, but I've added others that add layers to the gameplay: possess a villager, slow down time, make husks from corpses.
  5. Rival gods that are more like the player - Starting with them also being represented as a hand. They have to follow the exact same rules as you.
  6. Modern controls - An optional hotbar for spells and WASD for movement, but you can turn them off and use gestures and land grab if you want the old-school feel.

What I still want to add

The core is there, it's mostly about polish and content now.

Visual overhaul - The art style needs more cohesiveness and the terrain looks bare.

More creature designs, I love my monkey guy but that's diminished if every god has one.

Morphing of buildings and villagers with alignment.

Creature-to-creature interactions.

Any and all feedback is welcome, be brutal :D

There’ll be a playable demo for Steam Next Fest in February. Here’s the Steam page with the full trailer if you want to see more: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5433410/Godyssey/

Nintendo Is this switch 2 pricing a mistake?

Post image

Looking to buy a switch 2 and came across this. No bundle the switch 2 is €499 and this same bundle from curry’s minus the racing wheels is €569. If anyone’s looking to buy a switch this seems like a pretty good deal.

Question Amazon UK cancelled my RAM order and refunded me. Anyone else had this happen?

Hi all,

A few weeks ago I found a post about low RAM prices on Amazon (UK) and ordered a G.Skill Flare 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 at a really good price, especially with how expensive RAM is right now. It was due to arrive late October, but Amazon cancelled the order and refunded me without much explanation.

Has anyone else had RAM or other parts cancelled like this recently? A few questions:

Do you think its a porblem with seller??

Did contacting Amazon get you anything, like the original price honoured or a voucher?

I am thinking of reaching out to them regardless to see what they can do about this, but any response is appreciated here.

Thanks!

Anybody looking to swap their PS5 Pro for a Slim PS5 (disc and 13.6 FW) with Cash their way (Dublin)

Hey guys, might be a long shot but im currently looking to upgrade from my PS5 Slim with Disc Drive to a PS5 Pro. Rather than selling mine separately I am checking to see if anybody has a Pro that is not getting the use they thought it would and would be happy to downgrade to a Base model? Depending on condition I would happily throw a couple of hundred your way also, whatever the cost difference of both consoles new would be. I would be happy for us both to test both consoles before parting ways to make sure everybody happy.

So about my console. Its the 1TB Slim Disc Drive Model. In immaculate condition, comes with original box (like new), cables, controller, manuals and is currently on Firmware 13.60 so can be Jailbroken. (I have no interest in Jailbreaking myself but haven’t updated it since playing last about 2 months ago)

I’m hoping that this post is allowed as I am not looking to sell console on here, just gauging if a swap would be of interest. If not allowed I am happy to remove my post.

Help/Advice Where are you buying PC parts in Ireland? Can't find a fair price on a 1TB SSD

Hi all,

I'm replacing the SSD in my PC. My current one is a budget QLC drive that drops to around 30 MB/s on big Steam downloads, so I want a TLC NVMe M.2 drive instead. The WD Black SN770 1TB looks like the best fit, or something similar like a Samsung 990 EVO Plus. My board is an old B450, so Gen3 speeds are fine.

The problem is price. Amazon.ie has the SN770 1TB at around €350 from what i can see, which seems mad. I can see it for about £77 on argos in the UK, but shipping and import charges make that not worth the hassle.

My budget is around €100-200 if possible.

Does anyone know a good Irish shop or deal for this sort of drive? Links would be hugely appreciated. Is it worth waiting for Black Friday?

I can't find a good answer online, so I'd love to hear from people who've bought recently.

Card game like old times

Hey everyone! I’m a developer based in Drogheda, working on a car card game inspired by Top Trumps, which I loved playing growing up.

Did any of you play it too? What did you enjoy most—collecting the cards, comparing stats, or beating your friends with an unexpected winner? I’d love to hear your memories and what you’d want to see in a digital version!

I have just learned that this can be done and sounds too good to be true that yes you can play games for free, surely there's some negatives too? Like you can't download new updates etc would love to know whether it's a good idea or not.
