Moderator Message State of the Sub: Internet Mysteries

Hi folks! We wanted to check in and formally introduce ourselves to the sub as the team of new and active moderators. We come from various backgrounds and interests, be it true crime, internet mysteries, lostwave, web-sleuthing or educating. But we all have one thing in common and that is the passion and excitement for internet-based mysteries.

What is an internet based mystery?

Attempting to find an absolute meaning to this is hard to do and I think we can all agree that the concept is fairly subjective. To start, we’ve agreed that an internet mystery is a mystery that is found on the internet.

  • An Internet mystery can really be any strange phenomenon or event that hasn’t been solved or explained in the digital world. It often involves the online community, social media, or unexplained events that people discuss and share online. Some examples might include:
  • Unexplained Disappearances: Cases where people have vanished under odd circumstances, and folks online debate what really happened to them. An example of this would be cases like the Springfield Three Disappearances. Yes, it happened in the real World of the early 1990’s; however, it’s a case that has been debated and theorized on via online forums since the mid 90’s.
  • Viral Urban Legends: Stories or myths that spread across the Internet, gaining popularity through social media, even though they lack solid proof.
  • Mysterious Websites or Content: Odd sites or content that pop up without explanation, often with bizarre or creepy themes, like those found in the "deep web."
  • Online Conspiracies: Theories that emerge or gain traction online, usually without super great evidence, but get people talking and speculating.
  • Unidentified Creatures or Phenomena: Videos or reports of strange animals or unexplained events that spark discussion and investigation among people online.
  • These mysteries tend to pull people in, encouraging them to work together to figure things out or to share their thoughts on what’s really going on.

Please take some time to look over the rules and post expectations. Removal reasons for posts will reflect the rules stated. We as a mod team are working on projects such as a wiki, spreadsheet of internet mysteries and their statuses, and other ideas that will help create community and a clear vision for this subreddit.

We are aware that things are not perfect yet. But do know that we are all here actively moderating posts and comments. Which brings us to a major point that we are all facing right now. What posts do we allow and what do we remove? We have run into issues that are hard to navigate. One is coming to terms with the fact that there really aren’t a lot of truly interesting internet mysteries at this moment. It is hard to find new ones and the new ones posted often tend to not be anything that’s worth keeping on the sub.

But we cannot over-moderate everything, as that will in fact completely kill the subreddit. There needs to be a steady stream of posts and content and so there will be times when there’s a post that you personally don’t think fits, but we’ve let slide. This idea is that literally a mystery is a mystery that we do not know about. If we over moderate, we risk missing out on real mysteries.

The other issue is that we cannot in good faith just let everything slide. So we will remove posts that are big piles of nothing without further discussion.

Here’s where you come in: You are able to flag posts you think are low effort, don’t fit the sub, or are inappropriate. You are able to downvote posts that we choose not to remove. YOU are able to comment on posts you don’t like and (respectfully) give your opinions on the matter. The content quality of a sub is just as much a moderator's task as it is a member's task by using the upvote/downvote buttons and engaging in conversation. Please refrain from making comments in posts that you don’t like whining and telling the mods to do something. We are doing our best. You do something! Engagement creates community and quality.

We look forward to enjoying this subreddit with you all! We are discussing creating a new Internet Mysteries discord server, so please let us know if there is interest in that. It would be great to have a place to discuss mysteries in real time there instead of tons of them being posted here. Of course, it would be a great resource for major mysteries as well in which we could work together to investigate. Please feel welcome to comment here with any concerns, or reach out to the mod-team directly at any time!

Today marks the 15th anniversary of one of the internet's strangest mysteries — oct282011.com

Today marks the 15th anniversary of October 28, 2011, a date associated with one of those strange internet rabbit holes that seems to have faded into obscurity.

The website oct282011.com was connected to something called the “Record of Awakening,” and there was a lot of speculation about what it all meant and what was supposed to happen on this date.

I've been looking into the story recently, and it's fascinating how difficult it can be to separate the original material from all the theories and speculation that accumulated around it.

Does anyone here remember following this back in 2011? I'm especially curious whether anyone remembers the original website or knows more about the people behind it.

It's strange to think that 15 years have passed since all of this, and there are still questions about what was really going on.

Internet Oddity Reddit was conceived and founded in 2005, but its domain was reserved as early as 2002 for no apparent reason.

[Note: if this is something that’s known about, I apologise for wasting your time, do let me know in the comments and I’ll delete the post.]

Today, I was feeling nostalgic, and decided to go back in time to see what Reddit used to look like in the early noughties, so I fired up the wayback machine, entered ‘https://www.reddit.com/’ and found that the earliest archive was actually in 2002. Clicking on the earliest, it routed me to the domain registration page of back then, with the simple message ‘reddit.com domain reserved’.

There’s just one thing I don’t get: Reddit wasn’t even conceived until 2005.

According to Wikipedia:

The idea and initial development of Reddit originated with college roommates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in 2005, who attended a lecture by programmer-entrepreneur Paul Graham) in Boston during their spring break from University of Virginia.

Moreover, there’s a gap in the archives between 2003 and 2005 (at which it is the first Reddit page) so if the domain was used for something else in that time, it hasn't been saved. Anyone have any idea what this domain was used for (if anything) or who registered it initially?

Creepy account on Loopit with a fixation on young children in silver clothes

I'm not someone who actively seeks out stuff akin to you know who and the like, but I ended up finding this and felt like I had to post about it after delving into it a bit more.

For folks who dont know, Loopit is an app where you're able to make minigames and show them off to people, and it has a for you page similar to TikTok. I was scrolling it and discovered this account - it's a man with a fixation/fetish for young girls in silver clothes, school, and potentially water breaks and hide and seek.

I'm not one to kinkshame as long as it's not hurting anyone, and as skeevy as I thought it was that a lot of the characters he focuses on are children (most notably is indy from bluey who's 10 - and hes made posts acknowledging shes 10). However, after scrolling down on his account enough, I saw what appeared to be real images of young girls in these suits - or at the very least AI generated images that are intended to look real. No one ever talks about this platform so I feel its worth bringing up that it also could have a seedy underbelly

Kinda odd instagram...yes I know there's a lot of those. Maybe hes just a bit of an odd duck? Strange comments made about kids.

So. Nothing too shocking but I dont like the way he keeps bringing up kids and boobies. He seems a tad unhinged. Maybe its just me....any thoughts?

I came across him in a Amanda Seyfried account about a business shes started with two friends. Thats where the first mention of "boobies" and kids were made. Also, he seemed to be answering himself (?). Her company is focused on sustainable, non plastic "play decor" and toys for kids. I found it through a comedians account. Amanda's account: @mingey and the comedian: @branhattan odd guy: @elkinsjae2

I realize he'ss either a joke or schizophrenic but wondered if anyone found him to be more than just odd...

"Strange AI Instagram account from India targeting Mexico with cloned family faces".

Hello, first of all sorry about my bad writing or my bad grammar, my first language is the spanish so, sorry.

While I was doomscrolling on instagram, i found this rare account, its called shouvik, and I mean its very weird, it looks like a farm content but it feels very uncomfortable, as an example the guy who runs the account literally have reaction videos of himself, in a weird family, where the members of the family have only his face, he also have a lot of videos of him as a very big and athletic guy who pass his time only with a mini version of himself, and also the weird homoerotic stuff (the videos that didnt have the weird family have a guy very obssesed with the beatuy of shouvik, ngl, they didnt try to hide the sexual implications of the video), also the account is based in india but for a strange reason to many of the videos are on spanish and uses fake mexican locations, like fake magic towns, and if you search somenthing about shouvik, you got only an AI linkedin account that only talks about his experience, the weird thing is that even on linkedin he only post things about his weird ai family

thank you if anyone can help me, and again im sorry about my english, i think its kinda mid, because im from mexico

Unsolved Looking for a list of the atrocities committed during the Nanjing Massacre — is this lost media?

I’m looking for a list documenting the atrocities committed during the Nanjing Massacre. I remember reading about it during COVID, but I haven’t been able to find it again despite searching extensively.
From what I remember, it was widely discussed on social media, especially TikTok. The list consisted of hundreds upon hundreds of numbered entries, with each number representing a different crime committed. I think the text was red, and the document spanned multiple pages.
Does anyone remember this list or know where I could find it? Is it considered lost media, or does someone still have a link or a copy?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Twitter Mystery Does anybody have the Canal 5 videos and messages they sent on that on that specific day?

Does anybody have the original Canal 5 videos and messages that were posted on their Twitter account on the specific day of the Canal 5 incident? I'm looking for the original posts, including all the videos, text messages, tweets, replies, and any other content they shared that day.

I've been trying to find an archive of the incident, but it seems difficult to locate all the original material in one place. If anyone saved the videos, took screenshots of the messages, archived the tweets, or knows of a website that preserves the original posts, please let me know.

I'm especially interested in finding the original versions rather than reposts or summaries, so I can understand the full context of what happened and how the incident unfolded. If you have links to an archive, an archived Twitter profile, or other reliable sources containing the original material, please share them. Any help finding the complete collection of posts from that specific day would be appreciated. Thank you!

Internet Rabbit Hole Instagram recommends borderline CS4M just by looking up "kid", there are so many rings in the comment section. What is going on??

I was scrolling through reels, I came across this video of an Indian account borderline making out with his son. I checked the comment sections and it was all very suggestive with a few throwaway accounts seeing telegram links. I clicked the tag "kids" and suggestions are all kids in strange positions where they're slightly exposed or looking up at the camera with drool. I clicked the accounts some of them are just real families but the comment sections are spammed with strange comments and links. Why the hell is instagram suggesting this?? I reported many accounts but holy shit there's basically a million. It's so fucking obvious too. I would send screenshots of the comments, but I dont know what the links actually are. they all have tg in it so im assuming it's a ring. The more you click on the accounts that share links and check their followers the worse it gets.

Instagram knows what they are doing, how do they let this shit pass??

YouTube When Searching the term ‘Audio Blur and Unblur’ on Youtube it leads to gore.

Post image
209 Upvotes

Basically what the title says. I learned about this from the video “Weird Internet Mysteries and Rabbit Holes” by threadbarevids, but I haven’t seen anyone else talk about it. When you search “Audio Blur and Unblur” on YouTube, the results can lead to disturbing gore content. It may just be YouTube’s algorithm being weird and interpreting “blur and unblur” as “censor and uncensor,” which could explain the graphic results. Still, it’s such a strange and specific search term that I’m curious whether anyone else has encountered it or knows more about why this happens.

Unsolved Weirded out by a lot of Facebook profiles I found - whats going on here?

Thumbnail

I came across all of these weird, often but not always vaguely pornographic facebook accounts that I’m super curious about. Most have some sort of Google Drive link that I don’t want to click on. Some have an image that flashes very quickly and then a black screen with someone speaking in a foreign (to me) language. Some of the images are pornograpnic in nature, some are just weird fractals patterns, some are very strange (like one I found with a dog head photoshopped onto a lady’s body?). These types of accounts (and there are a LOT of them) all comes up when you type in “dream meaning hidden truth” or “divorced woman drama series” or any of the other suggested searches under one of the videos on the pages. Many of the videos or pictures flashing are repeated across accounts.

Super confused! Some pics of accounts for reference

Have you noticed this strange video in YouTube music playlists? Surely I’m not the only one who’s seen it?

Post image
49 Upvotes

I’ve been seeing this particular video in music playlists for quite a while now. I have a few questions:

  1. What is this video?

  2. Why this specific video?

  3. Why does it appear so often, and only in music playlists?

  4. Why does the video have 22 million views, yet there’s no mention of it anywhere online—except for a single post on Reddit?

I don’t want to make this sound mystical or anything, but it’s really strange that there isn’t a single sensible answer as to what this video is. If anyone has an answer—or even just a theory—please share it; this video is making me feel like I’m losing my mind

Not sure why, but I cannot find this film anywhere! I want to re-watch it and show my fiancé

I watched this documentary film "Who f'd up the internet" during the pandemic. It was really good, and showed just how messed up the internet system has become. For example how they monopolize areas and there are some places even in america that cannot access internet at all because of it. I can find that the film exists, but I can't find it online anywhere! I tried lookmovie and internet archive and everything. Its almost like these monopolies are hiding it because they don't want the truth out there 🤨 I want to re-watch it with my fiancé but I can't find it 🥲

Internet Oddity The Old Country Buffet Website is Still Active after the Company shut down 6 Years Ago?!

I was feeling nostalgic about buffets back in the day and i remember one of my favorite locations which was old country buffet (if you grew up in the 90s or early 2000s you definitely at least know what this is) and i just googled it for funs and read the wikipedia page and all but there was a link after the wikipedia link which is attached below which led to a nearly semi functional Old Country Buffet Website that was never taken down the thing that confuses me is that OCB went defunct in 2020 from covid and the company that acquired the IP didn't want anything to do with it and ig abandoned it but the thing is the sites copyright has been updated for 2025 which i assume it means someone has been updating or tinkering with the Site or its just the Firm that acquiring it just confirming ownership of the site which begs the question why? If you want nothing to do with it why not take down the site. (if this is the wrong sub reddit to post this on please feel free to direct me too the right one)

Does anyone remember this certain roblox game deemed the 'Most Disturbing'?

There's a chance that I may have imagined all of this, but I remember watching some videos about creepy roblox games back in 2021-2022 and coming across a video titled something along the lines of "The Most Disturbing Game in Roblox"

The video was in spanish and the game in question had a picture of ahenobarbus henocied as the cover. The video showed some gameplay and it seemed to have a sort of dreamcore/traumacore-ish kinda atmosphere to it. Like pngs of eyes across the sky and a maze of giant mushrooms.

According to the guy narrating the video, the game had Daisy's Destruction's audio as background soundtrack. I even remember a part of the video in which you could clearly hear the screams and cries of a baby (Supposedly from the infamous video) But then it was removed and replaced for random sinister music.

I recall playing it once while having the volume turned off. I didn't play it for much time. I remember it was pretty hard to exit and I had to turn off my computer itself to do so. I don't remember its name, its creator or the name of the channel that talked about it.

Let me know if i'm not crazy!

Unsolved Eerie apocalyptic Tomodachi Life DS videos, seemingly removed off the internet

A few months before living the dream came out, I would often see 'apocalyptic' or fallout-esque AI generated videos, specifically on Instagram of the DS version of tomodachi life. These videos were pretty eerie, often showing miis dying of fallout radiation, killing each other, and generally having like pretty heavy WW3 themes.

I remember specifically one showing miis in trenches with bombs dropping. They were most likely AI generated, although i do remember a few being animated by a person. I remember they would also have a really eerie audio accompanying them, I think it was KK Dirge from animal crossing or something similar. Really spooky.

Recently, I was talking with a friend about these kinds of videos, and they remembered them too. We both spent a while looking them up on both Instagram and Tiktok (where we both saw these videos), and we cannot find a single thing about them. I can imagine Nintendo is still pretty heavy with copyright so it's possible they're behind the deletion of them.

I've looked up Tomodachi Life creepypastas, and none of them are anything like it. These videos didn't really have any kind of story to them, bar the WW3 theming, like the creepypastas are, and were often just shorts on Instagram.

I was wondering if anyone else remembers seeing them early on this year? They weren't niche or anything, the ones i'm thinking of had hundreds of thousands of likes i'm sure.

YouTube Youtube channel AlreadyUnstable ARG or exploiting title glitches for views?

Thumbnail
gallery
26 Upvotes

all links at bottom of post

Recently I came across a video with only 505 views, titled 'صرخات' by a channel named 'AlreadyUnstable'. At the time (08-30-2026) it had 35,838 views and 195 subscribers, Channel description is nothing but 'We are equal.' Latest video was 4 years ago.

The video name ('صرخات') roughly translates to 'screams'. The video is a unsettling static image (image 1) of what seems to be a staircase and a face. When I brightend (image 2) it in PhotoPea it became a bit clearer, a face looking trough a door and 2 legs hanging above a staircase (what I assume is a person hanging, either suicide or murder). Since I am on a Chromebook I could not easily perform reverse-image searching, so I dont know where the image comes from.

The audio sounded off so I tested it to see if there was anything hidden in it. Steganography gave nothing, really (I think). I haven't done anything like that before so I'm not experienced. (results image 3).

The video gave no clues or anything. There are 15 other videos. Haven't looked at those. I dont know if its an ARG or anything alike. Could be a channel trying to get views with those old title glitches, if you search specific phrases these videos pop up like the full stop punctuation incident. It could very well be that, but I would assume someone trying to do that would upload tons of videos and not just 16.

YouTube This probably isn’t a mystery but I have a question and this seemed like a good subreddit to ask it in

Post image
12 Upvotes

So I was on my YouTube channel and right clicked on a notification to open a comment in a separate tab. I did it like three times and this photo shows up every time. If I regularly click on the YouTube comment from the notification, then it just takes me to the comment as normal. This happens no matter where I right click on the photo, and I just thought that it was interesting that it showed up, so I took a picture of it and figured I’d ask around.

It’s probably nothing new and this also might not be the right subreddit for it, but I figured people probably know more ab it than me lmao. Never seen it before on my years of the internet, so thought I’d ask!

Title: Help me find the original source of this creepy bedroom photo from a 2011X TikTok

I came across a TikTok photo posted by an account LARPing as 2011X, captioned “FOUND YOU.” like he found a new victim. It's a very dark, grainy picture of a bedroom, and the bed looks like someone is sleeping under the covers.

I've been trying to figure out where the image originally came from, if it was actually took, or if it's fake

Here's what I've found so far:

- The image appeared as a still photo on TikTok, not a video of someone moving.

- I tried several AI image detectors, but none flagged it as AI-generated. I know that doesn't conclusively prove it's a real photo.

- Google Lens led me to an Airbnb listing with a bedroom that looks remarkably similar, including the wooden furniture, headboard, and patterned bedding.

- The Airbnb listing I found that resembles the room is here: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/610203142908277002

- The Airbnb photo is way brighter, so I haven't confirmed whether it's the exact same room or where the dark image originated.

Does anyone recognize this image, know where it was first uploaded, or have ideas for finding the original full-resolution version?

I'll include the original TikTok screenshot and the AirBnb link to compare. Any help tracing the image's history would be appreciated!

General Discussion Saw multiple posts of South32.com on different "Weird Website" subreddits, instagram or X pages, is there anything new with them?

I know south32 is an old internet rabbithole and how messed up it was. Until ScareTheatre just debunked most of their scheme which was mostly domain hijacking and marketing show. I am not sure if it's real or I'm just hallucinating (sorry, had a very sleepless night) but they even had an independent movie or at least the teaser/trailer for the movie uploaded to the website.

Recently I was on r/WeirdWebsites and noticed people posted south32, also I was exploring internet mystery pages on Instagram and X (formerly twitter) and I saw those people mentioned south32 as well. Although Instagram/X pages are Iranian ones and they love to make things stranger than what they actually are and mentioned it's a dark web project, etc.

So, is there anything new with this website or it's just typical internet craze? Or is it just them posting links to their site all over the internet to get attention?
