ModAnnouncement Moderator Announcement - About the Current State of r/Indians_StudyAbroad

With the recent growth of the subreddit, we have seen it increasingly drift away from what it is primarily meant to be: a place for Indians who are planning to study abroad, currently studying abroad, or trying to make informed decisions about doing so.

We want the subreddit to remain a place where people can hear both the good and the bad. Critical experiences are welcome. Positive experiences are welcome. What we do not want is repetitive fearmongering, blind optimism, personal attacks, sweeping claims about entire countries or nationalities, or discussions that have little to do with studying abroad.

We will therefore be enforcing the following standards more consistently going forward:

Keep discussions directly connected to studying abroad

Admissions, universities, programmes, applications, scholarships, funding, education loans, student visas, accommodation, internships, student jobs, academic/student life, adjusting to another country and post-study career outcomes are all relevant.

Standalone questions about immigration, PR/citizenship, “which country should I settle in?”, “how can I leave India?”, Indian politics, or general expat/career discussions DO NOT BELONG HERE. Post-study work and immigration can only be discussed when they are directly relevant to evaluating a specific study pathway.

Do some research before asking others to make a major decision for you

Posts asking which is the best country to study abroad or is Germany worth without context WILL BE REMOVED. Tell us your background, what you are considering, what you have already found, and what question remains.

Claims need context

If you are telling someone that a country has no jobs, that a degree has poor prospects, that sponsorship is impossible, that a university is bad, etc., PLEASE EXPLAIN THE BASIS OF YOUR ADVICE. Relevant firsthand experience, field, approximate time period or a credible source makes advice much more useful. You do not need to disclose private identifying information. The same rule applies to overly optimistic claims.

Being critical is welcome; putting people down is not

Disagree with someone’s plan, assumptions or information as strongly as you want, but explain why. Comments whose main contribution is “you’re stupid,” “you won’t survive abroad,” “go back/stay in India,” mocking someone’s background, or similar personal attacks WILL BE REMOVED.

Do not generalise about Indians or any other nationality

I can’t believe that I need to say this but any posts generalizing a nationality WILL BE REMOVED! Experiences involving poor behaviour, discrimination, cultural differences, housing, workplaces, etc. can and SHOULD be discussed.

HOWEVER, these individual experiences should NOT be made into statements about what ‘Indians are like’ or what ‘Germans are like’ or even what ‘the West thinks of Indians’. Nationality-wide judgment is not useful advice and WILL BE REMOVED.

Repetitive doomposting and repetitive hype will be removed

We do not want ten posts on ‘Germany is finished’, ‘UK has no jobs’ or ‘Canada is dead’, etc. Comment on previous posts on the same topic. Posts without substantive new information WILL BE REMOVED.

Likewise, repetitive hype or overly optimistic posts are not exempt from the same standard.

“Announcement”, “Official”, “Mod Announcement” and official announcement flairs are reserved for moderators.

Use a normal descriptive title for personal posts. Do not use these terms in your post or it WILL BE REMOVED. Repeated misuse will get you BANNED!

No commercial solicitation

As always, study-abroad counsellors, agents, admissions consultants, or anyone offering such services ARE NOT WELCOME to use this subreddit to find clients, advertise services, or promote themselves through comments.

YOU WILL BE BANNED!

This is an India-centred community

The subreddit exists to help Indian applicants and students. People from other countries are welcome to contribute in terms of relevant firsthand experience. However, as mentioned before, unnecessary pessimism / optimism / racial attacks / hate comments ARE NOT WELCOME!

Finally, we are also looking for new moderators

We need a few active moderators to help manage the queue and deal with reports.

You do not need previous moderation experience. Though, it will definitely be a plus. People who are active in this community are welcome to apply. People representing any sort of agency / consultancy are NOT WELCOME TO APPLY.

If you are interested, please send me a message.

Commerce Msc Accounting in Ireland: Can 9 ACCA papers override undergraduate backlogs during human review?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m applying for MSc Accounting & Finance programs in Ireland for the 2027 intake, and I’m hitting a massive wall with automated portal backlog filters at public universities. I really want to hear from anyone who has successfully gone through a manual review or an RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) appeal.

my_qualifications:

  • Distance B.Com (~62% / 6.21 CGPA) – degree is 100% completed and officially awarded.
  • Cleared 9 out of 13 professional ACCA papers (completing the entire Applied Knowledge & Applied Skills levels).
  • 4 months of practical audit associate experience.
  • 130 on Duolingo.

The Context on My Backlogs: My transcript shows around 8 cleared backlogs, but these happened during a very specific window. I had a bad medical accident mid-term, and some of my university exam dates directly clashed with my professional ACCA sittings. I cleared every single one of them afterward, so I have zero active backlogs now.

Where Things Stand: As expected, the central online application portals (DCU, UCD) sent back automated "unsuccessful" status updates because their initial software rules cap backlogs at 3–5.

However, after reaching out directly, Senior Admissions at UCD Smurfit personally pulled my file to bring it directly to the Admissions Review Committee this week. The Galway team also asked me to email their direct desk for a manual check.

A few questions for anyone who has been through this:

  1. Has anyone with 7–9 cleared backlogs managed to get an entry waiver or RPL exception at top Irish universities when backed by professional qualifications like ACCA or CA?
  2. How heavily do review committees weigh 9 passed ACCA papers against past undergraduate re-sits?
  3. Any tips on how to structure medical proof and ACCA transcripts when submitting an appeal package?

Would really appreciate any honest thoughts, advice, or past experiences. Thanks a lot!

Scholarships Which countries/universities offer income-based scholarships (not merit based) for students financing their degree on their own?

• Upvotes

my_qualifications: 6 yoe in immigration consulting,

looking for a masters program, really only because I want to live abroad for a while and travel- not with the intent of immigrating permanently or to land a job afterwards. I'm keeping it very low stakes and low expectations.

I plan on financing this through my own savings, so it's a dumb decision unless I'm on a fully funded program. even better if there's a stipend. I'm open to anywhere in the world. Since I'm older (late twenties) and been earning for a while, I'm trying to research where I could get financial aid as an independent student without listing my parents' income or assets. I believe I can substantially increase my odds of getting need based financial aid that way. I've read that Italy is a great option for trying this kind of experiment, but I would love to know others' experiences with this. Thanks

Resume/CV/Documents 4 years of contractual media work, average academics, 6 LPA. Is a German MBA a realistic reset, or what can I be doing something else?

Hi all, looking for honest advice. I’m trying to completely change the direction of my career and I’m not sure what the smartest move is.

"my_qualifications:"

  • BA Philosophy (2018), CGPA 5.4/10
  • MA Film Studies (2022), CGPA 7.4/10
  • About 4 years of work experience, all contractual or consultant roles at small, informal “lala company” type setups. No structure, no proper appraisal system.
  • Work has been in video editing, content writing, and video news production. I also did roughly 5 months as a project manager on a government communications project.
  • Currently at 6 LPA as a contractual consultant at a media house.

The problem:
I want to get into a proper corporate setup, but I keep hitting a wall. I don’t have a clearly marketable skill, and I’ve never worked at an MNC, so my CV doesn’t get shortlisted for the roles I want. I feel like I’m stuck in a loop of small contracts with no growth.

What I’m thinking:
I’m considering an MBA or a management master’s in a public university in Germany as a clean start. I’ve already started learning German.

My questions:

  1. With a 5.4 in my bachelor’s and a 7.4 in my MA, would I realistically get admitted to a decent German MBA or management program? Does the low UG score kill my chances, or does work experience plus a good GMAT/GRE make up for it?
  2. Is a German MBA even worth it for someone with my profile, given job prospects after graduation, the language barrier, and the cost?
  3. What should I be doing in India right now to make my profile stronger and future proof? Certifications, a specific skill, switching to a particular kind of job first?
  4. Are there better options I’m not seeing, like an Indian MBA (CAT/SNAP/GMAT), a one-year executive program, a specific domain switch (instructional design, marketing, ops), or something else?
  5. If you’ve made a similar switch from media, humanities, or non-corporate work into the corporate world, how did you do it?

I’m open to blunt answers. I’d rather hear the reality now than waste 2 years and a lot of money on the wrong move.

Thanks in advance.

Passport / Visa / Immigration Guidance required on Ireland student visa ITRs ysk

Hello! Has anyone successfully moved to Ireland for their Master’s without ITRs? If so, how did you do it?
I know ITRs are an important requirement but not everyone has them. In my case, I have sufficient funds and will also be taking an education loan. I have all the other documents and financial proofs except ITRs.
Can bank statements, proof of funds, living expenses, an education loan sanction letter, and fee payment receipts be enough as a proof? Or is there any alternative way to provide any other proof for the very same reason?
If anyone has an idea, or has gone through the process successfully, please share your experience and process. Any guidance would be really helpful. Thank you!

Careers Career Advice: which Master degree in Germany or the UK After BSc Operation Theatre & Anaesthesia Technology — Non-Clinical Careers and Fully Funded Scholarships

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some genuine advice and opinions about my future career and plans to pursue a master's degree abroad.

My academic background:

"My_qualifications": BSc in Operation Theatre and Anaesthesia Technology

CGPA: 7.5

Higher Secondary marks: 95%

Work experience: None

I’m considering pursuing a master's degree abroad, but there’s one important thing I’ve realised about myself: I have absolutely no interest in working in the clinical field. I would prefer to explore non-clinical career options instead.

At the moment, I’m considering the UK (particularly London) and Germany for my master's degree. However, I’m confused about which career path to choose, which master's programme would be suitable for my background, and whether this plan is realistically achievable.

I would really appreciate your opinions on the following questions:

1. Which career path would be the best choice for me?

Based on my undergraduate degree and academic background, which master's programmes especially other than clinical side would you recommend? I'd also appreciate suggestions for suitable universities in Germany or the UK.

2. Is pursuing a master's abroad worth it in my situation?

What are the actual pros and cons of studying in either country? Considering career opportunities, job prospects after graduation, salary potential, and long-term career growth, which destination would be the better choice?

My long-term goal is to build a good career and eventually progress into a management position.

3. Is a fully funded scholarship possible for someone with my background?

This is probably my biggest concern. My financial situation is very limited, so I would need a fully funded scholarship to make studying abroad possible.

Since I graduated in 2026, I'm aiming for the next year's intake, ideally September 2027. That gives me roughly six months or more to improve my profile before applying for relevant scholarships and university programmes, depending on their deadlines.

Is it realistic to build a strong enough profile within this time? Can extracurricular activities, volunteering, relevant online certifications, projects, or other achievements improve my chances of receiving a fully funded scholarship?

If so, what specific things would you recommend I prioritise over the next six months?

I would be grateful for any honest advice, especially from people who have studied or worked in Germany or the UK, switched careers after their bachelor's degree, or received fully funded scholarships.

I'm still at the beginning of this journey, so even small suggestions or personal experiences would be really helpful.

Thank you!

Engineering Can yall predict my chances of getting into NUS 🫠

So I'm in 12th right now, and I have a pretty decent score from the start of 12th in all PCM+ English. I would be giving JEE in jan ( ik it's not required for application). I want to apply for NUS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering course with scholarship. Can anyone predict the probability of me getting in 🫠

my_qualifications: student rn ( reddit forced me to add this.)

Here is the list of things I did:

  1. Bronze Award in Queens Commonwealth Essay Competition 2026.

  2. Very High Commendation in John Locke Essay Competition 2025. (Essay was on inferiority complex and how it effects human choices. Additionally, is inferiority a human choices.)

  3. Honours List winner in Immerse Essay Competition 2025. (My essay was on The Theory of Everything)

  4. Finalist in the Inkling Book contest.

  5. Honorable Mention: Trust To Sustainable Living International Student Essay Competition 2026

  6. Editor for The Teen Magazine in Wellness Category. Edited over 100+ articles. I, myself, had 50k+ monthly readers.

  7. School caption in 2025. Got a scientific inclination award by the school the same year.

  8. Participated in an MUN and won it. Committee was COPUOS.

I think I can score up to 95+% in boards. Jee 🫡well let's see 🫡. Now can anyone please tell me what are my chances of getting in 🫠 students who are applying to NUS, alumini or anyone would be a great help 🥲

Choices_after_12th Im very lost and hestitant on what do do after 12th

my_qualifications: student

To put it short, I am doing jee right now and I fear that I really might have messed up. I was hesitant to take jee since the beginning, but because of my interest in science over commerce, it felt like the only option if I wanted a "successful career". I regretted it then and now because I knew my strength is not at all in academics, it's more in creative thinking and arts you could say but due to pressure and uncertainty I chose jee.

Now I'm stuck bc I don't know about jee but quitting is not an option. I want to desperately go abroad and am clinging onto hopes that if jee doesn't work out, I will find a scholarship somehow.

but I want to know my reality bc it seems hopeless.

In the end my question is just that, is my only option to hate jee and grind through it or will I have any success in going abroad?

Careers 29M, 5 yrs in treasury/liquidity risk (Technical BA/Product Owner role), MBA vs MSc Finance(specialised in risk ) and which country?

Hi all ,

I have posted in this forum but i am restructuring with better details to understand if i should try and aim for good b schools in Round 2 . I know the trade offs , but wanted to check if my background can help me .

my_qualifications: 9/8/7

  • 29, 5 years of work experience, Engineering background
  • Currently a Business Analyst in liquidity risk, for a large global bank through an IT services firm. Before that, at a GCC (US based) in treasury and liquidity risk(Risk and Compliance)
  • Worked around data story telling through power bi /stakeholder requirements/end to end product delivery /led the delivery of cloud based data platform for risk
  • Worked with teams globally: london ,poland , new york . Worked with corproate treasury /international market and liquidity risk teams . Exposure to risk but not directly in business role rather a support .
  • Earning 20 LPA
  • Preparing for the GRE, applying this cycle(current score is 311 , aiming 320+ )
  • I still feel my domain depth is not strong enough , specially markets /products/

Goal
Move out of business analyst role into a high growth domain-focused risk/capital markets role within investment banks/consulting firms such as Oliver Wyman , build real expertise over the years, and eventually drive strategy. Post GRE will try CFA L1 for good understanding of Finance .

If this path does not work the probably digital transformation is my option which is a direct transition .

Options I’m weighing

  1. MBA (finance/strategy focus): ISB/ LBS/NUS /UNC KF /
  2. MSc Finance with a risk specialization: LBS/ Frankfurt School of Finance (their curriculum is good )
  3. Masters in Business Analytics (finance electives for getting into banks within risk ): University of Texas (McCombs school of business has this curriculum )

Constraints

  • Countries considering: Germany/France /UK/ Singapore /US
  • Open to coming back to India if it doesn’t work out: Back to my current role I suppose if things go too bad .

Questions

  1. For someone 29 with 5 years of experience in data/it business analyst role , does an MSc mean restarting at entry level abroad, or do employers value the experience?
  2. Which countries are realistically sponsoring international grads in risk/finance/fintech roles right now?
  3. If the target role doesn’t come through, how realistic is landing a specialized BA/analyst role in banking abroad as a fallback?
  4. Anyone who made a similar move from BA/IT services into Risk or corporate finance /strategy roles ? What worked?

Would appreciate answers from people who’ve actually done this rather than general takes.

PS: took help from AI for structuring the post

Misc. Disciplines Imperial College London vs Schulich (York University) — seeking advice on career, experience, lifestyle and personal growth

Hi everyone! I'm 23F from India, trying to decide between two options for my Master's in Marketing. I'd appreciate honest perspectives, especially from alumni and international graduates.

My_qualifications:
8.9 CGPA from a Tier 2 university
1 year of full-time work experience
1+ year of freelance/project experience (alongside the full time experience, so no gap)
6 months of running my own venture
Marketing internships at 3 unicorn companies

I've interviewed for the Master's in Marketing at Imperial College London and am fairly confident about getting in. My brother, who lives in Canada, is encouraging me to consider Schulich School of Business at York University instead.

His argument is that university rankings matter less than the opportunities you pursue, the network you build, and the experience you gain. He also believes having family nearby while studying abroad is a significant advantage.

I'm struggling to weigh a few things:
1. Reputation and career prospects: How much does Imperial's global reputation matter compared with Schulich's strong standing in Canada? Would one offer a meaningful advantage when pursuing marketing roles with multinational or luxury brands?

2. International exposure and post-study opportunities: How do the UK and Canada compare in terms of networking, employability for international graduates, post-study work options, and opportunities to build a long-term career abroad?

3. Lifestyle and independence: I've lived with my family my entire life and, honestly, had a fairly privileged upbringing. Part of me wants to move to London, live independently, manage everything myself, and experience that personal growth. However, having my brother nearby in Canada would provide a support system. For those who've studied abroad, how much did living independently versus having family nearby affect your experience?

4. Prestige versus practicality: Getting into a globally renowned university has always been a personal goal. I recognise that I might be attaching too much importance to prestige, but I also don't want to dismiss its potential career benefits. How should I approach this trade-off?

I'm not committed to settling abroad permanently, so I'd ideally like to keep my future options open.
If you were in my position, what would you prioritise and why? I'd particularly appreciate first-hand experiences rather than opinions based solely on rankings.

TL;DR: 23F from India, deciding between Imperial London and Schulich in Canada for a Master's in Marketing. Imperial appeals to me for its global reputation and the opportunity to live independently for the first time. My brother, who lives in Canada, believes Schulich could offer comparable opportunities with the benefit of family support. How should I weigh reputation, career prospects, international exposure, post-study work opportunities, and personal growth?

ToAbroadOrNot? Which university is good for a Master's in Fashion/Luxury Brand Management abroad

Hey everyone!

My_qualifications

I'm from India and considering a master's in Fashion/Luxury Brand Management. I've shortlisted these courses:

1)Ravensbourne University London – MA Luxury Brand Management

2)Northumbria University London – MSc Luxury Brand Management

3) RMIT University – Master of Fashion (Entrepreneurship)

4)Toronto Metropolitan University – MA Fashion

I'd love to hear from current students or graduates about the course quality, job opportunities, and whether the degree is worth the cost.

Is it realistic to find a job abroad after graduation? And how valuable would the degree be if I return to India?

If you've studied at any of these universities, please share your honest experience. Any advice would be really helpful.

Thanks you!!
