The Dream Outgrew the Tattoo — an overlay experiment
This started with an idea from my photography days: put one image inside another, then see how their meanings change.
Serena is the recurring subject of my work. For this experiment, I wanted her resting against her own knee, dreaming of an earlier portrait of herself suspended above an ocean sunset.
We began with a close-up eye surrounded by autumn-colored paint. Then we placed the sunset portrait inside its iris. Next came the idea of carrying that whole composition onto her leg as a tattoo—a dream inside an eye, inside an image of the dreamer.
That was where the composition became difficult. How much could we fit into that little space before the story became unreadable?
Through back-and-forth work with ChatGPT and Grok, I kept reconsidering placement, scale, and how much of the original portrait to preserve. Eventually, we let the dream expand beyond the tattoo. Paint became waves. The sunset opened into an ocean.
Somewhere along the way I jokingly suggested a gigantic whale. Apparently, the whale took the invitation seriously.
These images trace that exploration through AI-generated portraits, reference-guided edits, and double-exposure effects. I had an intention at the beginning; the final composition emerged through the revisions.
