💬 General Discussion OCCAP incompetency
Capital One HR said to many students face that they don't like the arrangement, that they would like to meet the faculty in charge for placements. She also said they won't be coming again.
Why are these bodies not run by actual students? Like IISc has good mess because it is run by students. Why not the same for placement body? Why not some actual skin in the game?
I feel like IISc placements have potential to be much much better if handled by people who actually go through the process.
Really disappointed with this year's placements.

Placements are good , it's bad for data science and software people.

Bro ds and soft are like half the placements at IISc.
Also a good year for electrical electronics isn't because of occap.
Do you feel they manage things well? Honestly?

No they didn't manage well either. Just saying. Placements are 50% dependent on students also.

We do have PRs, who are supposed to represent the student community. However, if we let students run the show, would that not be a massive conflict of interest?
I agree that the CapitalOne test arrangements were horrible, and the HR is right to threaten us with consequences. However, the responsible staffperson from OCCAP has resigned due to this incident. All the other OAs/interviews I have seen have been fairly smooth.

Yes, there would be conflict of interest, but we can have mechanisms to solve that issue.
Also, the top IITs have student run placement bodies, and their stats seem to be better than us.
I feel, a bureaucrat just doesn't have enough skin in the game. And what's the guarantee the new one would be better?
A student on the other hand, will be much more active.
For example in InMobi test, occap folks reassured us multiple time that they've communicated the cgpa thing to hrs. When they actually arrived, it was us (the students) who actually got people to be able to give the test.

One thing I absolutely hate is the fact that some companies don’t even shortlist PhDs for roles that totally align with their profile despite mentioning in the JD that PhDs are allowed. Occap doesn’t even do anything about this

At least in chemistry, IISc PhDs are more likely to leave company within a year or two to join postdoc position. It happened in 2024 and 2025 when I was there. Thus companies hesitate to hire. They don't want to waste their money, resources and time on such candidates. Those who want to permanently transition to industry suffer in this process. During my master's in Pune University, individual departments use to regulate the placement process. I think that can change a lot positively. Plus placement office should also invite other universities to hire for academic positions.

That makes sense.. I believe some private universities do come for placements here

Worst part is their emailing system. 10 people send emails from 10 different IDs despite having a group mail ID. The so called portal didn't go online. They made students make the profiles for nothing. The National Optical and Electro Mechanical Industries was whole another incident!

Bruh, give it to students and suddenly they are extending favours and trying to sabotage other student to fulfil their personal vendetta.
At least no student has power over other students like IITs and IIMs .In IISc Students can confront and reply freely to any wrong doing by other student given the current placements setup.
