Our neighbors being held by ICE at the detention camp in Folkston, Georgia are on Day 20 of a hunger strike in protest of the unsanitary, unsafe, abusive conditions behind the barbed wire. A dozen of them are still holding the line and refusing food.
Over the weekend, we got a harsh reminder of why they’re willing to take such dramatic action, as the deportation machine confirmed a death at the camp. Luis Sandoval, a native of El Salvador living in Newark, was 48 years old. He is the 60th person to die in ICE detention since the beginning of Trump’s second term. He was reportedly found, as ICE put it, with “a ligature around his neck.”
We cannot allow Sandoval to be swept under the rug, and we need to make sure DHS knows they’re being watched closely, for him and for the strikers, who have raised concerns that ICE and GEO Group personnel force feeding them is imminent.
🗣️ Let’s continue to use Shutdown FIPC's phone blitz guide at bit(.)ly/phoneblitzguide to reach out to Georgia’s senators and city and local officials and push them to intervene with ICE and conduct real oversight, along with putting more pressure directly on facility and ICE personnel. In addition to the demands in the guide, we can add 1) a push for an independent investigation into Luis Sandoval’s death, 2) a request for Senators Warnock and Ossoff to conduct an inspection visit to Folkston as soon as possible and 3) emailing Folkston ICE field office director Nick Jimenez at [nicolas.jimenez@ice.dhs.gov](mailto:nicolas.jimenez@ice.dhs.gov) to object to force feeding.
🙋🏼♂️ We can find contact information, other specific asks and language in the guide and more actions and ways to stay plugged in here.
