Discussion πŸ—£οΈ Need Advice on Starting a Hydroponic Lettuce Farm in India β€” Is It Actually Viable?

Hi everyone!

I'm a student from India, currently researching hydroponic farming as a potential future business. I'm particularly interested in starting a small-scale prototype first and eventually building a commercial operation if the numbers make sense.

My current plan:

- Location: Rohtas district, Bihar, India

- Crop of interest: Romaine lettuce and potentially other high-value crops

- Long-term growing area under consideration: Around 6 acres (initially start with 2,500mΒ²)

- Initial prototype budget: Approximately β‚Ή10-15 lakh($10500-$15000), depending on feasibility and funding

- Potential future buyers: Restaurants, hotels, premium grocery stores, distributors and buyers in nearby cities

- Growing system: Still researching hydroponics vs. soil-based protected cultivation

I'm not planning to invest immediately. I want to understand the practical challenges and validate the business model before committing money.

I'd really appreciate advice from people who have actually operated farms or purchased hydroponic produce.

My main questions:

  1. Is growing lettuce commercially in Bihar India realistic, considering the hot summers and local climate? What kind of greenhouse, cooling or seasonal strategy would be necessary?

  2. What are the realistic setup costs, monthly operating expenses and marketable yield for a 2,500 mΒ² growing area?

  3. How difficult is it to find reliable, repeat buyers for lettuce in eastern India? Would supplying larger cities make economic sense after transport costs?

  4. What selling price should a beginner realistically expect, rather than premium retail prices?

  5. What are the biggest hidden costs and common reasons hydroponic farms fail?

  6. Would you recommend starting with a small pilot before building a commercial greenhouse? What should I measure during the pilot?

  7. If you were starting this project in my location today, what would you do differently?

I'm especially interested in real-world experience, actual costs, mistakes and lessons learned, including negative experiences.

I would appreciate honest criticism. If this business model doesn't make sense for my location or budget, I'd rather find out now than after investing.

Thank you!

Question ❔ What mustard greens for aerogarden?

Post image
19 Upvotes

I got this aerogarden on marketplace and I'm trying to grow some mustard greens or spicy lettuce with it. My issue is that the leaves tend to reach the light very quickly. So I'm picking them every few days.

Any suggestions on what varieties I could grow that would stay under 9" (20cm) and have a good yield?

I currently have:

- Mizuna: very good yield but grows too tall

- Red Giant: very slow

- some dill

- just started a watercress

Thanks!

I bought a new LG spedroscopic cultivation machine. He's a heavy guy who weighs about 70kg. The wind comes out, the water circulates, and the temperature can be adjusted day and night. But it's a discontinued product in Korea. I'm growing 6 plants.

I wrote it with a translator because I'm Korean.

Plants to grow: arugula, oak lif, spinach, green chae, vitamin, romaine

No Greenhouse Yet, But Big Dreams: My Next Chapter in Hydroponic Farming

Hello! I’m a grower and agtech developer based in Paju, South Korea, with 4 years of farming experience.

My farming journey has had its challenges. After being displaced from my rented land, I secured government-leased land to rebuild. While I don't have the capital to construct a new greenhouse just yet, I remain deeply committed to building a long-term future in agriculture.

My goal is to cultivate cherry tomatoes and strawberries using hydroponics. In the meantime, I am using my field experience to develop Windows-based monitoring dashboards and software solutions for hydroponic and greenhouse management.

As I prepare for this next chapter, I’d deeply appreciate any advice, insights, or experiences you could shareβ€”whether on low-cost greenhouse setup, strawberry/cherry tomato hydroponics, or smart farm software development. Thank you for reading and being part of my journey! πŸŒΏπŸ“πŸ…

Gold in Jacks Part A nutrient solution?

Long story short I was cleaning my grow towers today and noticed gold shiney flakes in the last hit of water.

When gold panning the gold stays on the bottom due to weight. I ironically accidentally did this by adding water , pumping out dirt, and repeating several times. I was left with gold flakes.

In the first photo I pressed my fingernail into the flake and found it bent in half ,but didn't break.

Anyone else notice this? I'm taking a couple sample flakes to a jeweller to test them tomorrow.

Discussion πŸ—£οΈ Growlab Tent 80L - Need Help!!

Title: Help identifying frame poles for a GrowLab 80L grow tent β€” am I missing parts?

I have a used GrowLab 80L grow tent (model HGC706860) and I'm trying to figure out how the frame is supposed to assemble and whether I have all the correct poles and connectors.

The tent is approximately 59" Γ— 31" Γ— 79".

Here's what I have:

  • 6 poles, 39.5" long, 20 mm diameter, with spring buttons
  • 6 poles, 39.5" long, 22 mm diameter, with receiving holes
  • 22 poles, 45.5" long, 22 mm diameter, smooth ends with no buttons or holes

The button-ended poles fit into the receiving-hole poles. Two joined together fit snugly in the exterior corner flaps from the bottom to the top, so I think those are the uprights.

My problem is the horizontal frame. The 45.5" poles fit into the separate fabric flaps on the outside of the tent, but they're too short to span the long side (about 59") and too long for the short side (about 31"). Two of the shorter poles joined together would be too long horizontally.

The fabric flaps are on the outside of the tent. I also don't see where three-way corner connectors would fit, so I'm unsure whether this model uses them or whether the frame assembles differently.

Questions:

  1. Does anyone own a GrowLab 80L and know the original frame layout?
  2. Are the 45.5" smooth poles supposed to be roof crossbars or something else?
  3. Does this tent use plastic corner connectors, hooks, or another type of joint?
  4. Based on these measurements, am I missing some poles, or could some of these pieces belong to a different tent?

I'd really appreciate photos of an assembled GrowLab 80L frame or the original assembly instructions. I don't want to buy replacement parts until I know how it's supposed to go together. Thanks!

domes??

Hello, My Aerogarden Elite did not come with domes so I purchased them on amazon. I planted one pod with arugula,(my own seeds) buttercrunch (my own seeds and one Romaine Aerogarden pod. My arugula sprouted in 2 days with tiny baby leaves level to the basket cover on top. The other two have not germinated yet. Is been 5 days. Do I remove the plastic dome on the Arugula or wait until the leaves touch the dome. I am reading conflicting information. Thanks

Question ❔ Final Shopping list for dwc?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I want to build out a dwc system to transition from outdoors in ground gardening to indoors over the very very long northern Michigan winter.

I took some suckers from the cherry tomatoes, isolated, and started rooting on water but they took off on me, pushing my dwc project ahead. And the leaves are starting to yellow with just water and the seed starter light.

I have a spyder farmer 100w LED panel, totes, and buckets and 3d printing the baskets. The plan is a tomato/pepper tote(s) directly under the light and lettuce buckets in the periphery + maybe a second 100w.

The big issue is getting nutrients here in the rural midwest and this tps brand is the only cheaper/small quantity that's 2 days out. Master blend is 10-14 days away.

Is there anything missing from this order? Air pumps, nutrients, LECA, meter + buckets, lights, plants?
