I was wondering if anyone knew of a place serving this dish, or something approximating it. Maybe not 100% authentic, but close enough to get an idea of what it tastes like. Video for clarity.

Any other Vietnamese restaurants with egg rolls like the ones at Cali Sandwich?

My wife and I dream about the egg rolls at Cali Sandwich, and have never encountered anything like them at any other restaurants. However, we don’t live near midtown, and sometimes dining in at Cali can be dicey, depending on how…odiferous the bathrooms/grease traps are that day. Are there any other good Vietnamese restaurants in the Houston area with the same type of egg rolls? Extra points if it’s a slightly nicer place you can take an out of town guest for dinner. Even more extra points if it’s on the west/southwest side.

Hot Pot Best Hot Pot in Town?

I recently came back from a trip to China and it was the first time I had hot pot and I absolutely loved it. Wanted to see what are the best hot pot restaurants here that are authentic and have lots of flavor.

As a side note, I did have hot pot from Beijing and Chengdu and oddly enough, I preferred Beijing better. Not sure if there are specific restaurants here that cater to the different styles or if there even is a huge difference

Does anyone know what is in the white chimac sauce that they include with the rice bowls? It’s almost like a ranch but isn’t.

Mexican/Tex-Mex Slop nachos

I’ve been looking for a good plate nachos. A lot of places serve individually topped nachos and I’m looking for a big sloppy plate. Any suggestions? Jax used to do a fantastic plate of nachos but they’ve changed the recipe and it’s just not as good as it used to be.

Tacos Tacos Frontera TJ Style

In my family we're kinda taco snobs, so when I walked in and didn't see a trompo my expectations dropped. So ended up ordering asada con todo. The tortillas were so fresh and homemade, the asada had a great flavor and char. The Chile de arbol was 🔥. Tacos were so appetizing on first sight I forgot to get a pic. If you've ever had tacos in TJ these are legit.

Texas barbecue pitmasters are trying to figure out how to keep customers while not ruining their margins. We talked to two pitmasters on either side of Houston about their "value" trays and how they're working out.

Doku Friday date night

We finally made a reservation last Friday, showed up a little early for our 8pm and got seated right away. Started with the carpaccio and a few rolls. I had a craving for steak, the wagyu roll was great, with the avocado and a little wasabi. The other roll was topped with caviar and I highly recommend it. We did the 8 piece nigiri and the presentation was fantastic, large fish servings were absolutely excellent with balanced neta/rice. I absolutely did not dip in soy or add wasabi to anything. The unagi was so amazing we had to order another round of them. I'm not usually a fan of cooked food at sushi bars but this was exceptional.

The drinks were acceptable for the price, you get a little ducky souvenir thing. I would say the restaurant is a little bit too loud for my preference, maybe some acoustic panels on the ceiling would help. We were seated at the tables near the middle of the room. Garage parking was free and available on 2nd floor, as well as plenty of valet. Next time, I would prefer patio seats if that's an option. It appeared to be a great place for singles, as well.

Overall, the protein is definitely worth the premium, plenty of selection on the menu, the environment is great... maybe show up earlier if you like a slightly quieter experience.

Hope this helps & eat well!

Restaurant Opening/Closing Houston's Mala Sichuan is bringing the heat to Cypress next year

Mala Sichuan Bistro is moving into the former Duck N Bao location in CyFair Town Center at 17333 Spring Cypress Rd., Suite H. The news popped up in a Houston food group on Facebook, and yep, it’s the same one folks already know from its Houston and Katy locations.

If you’re familiar with Mala, you already know the deal. Delicious Sichuan Chinese food with big flavors, plenty of spice like their dan dan noodles, mapo tofu, spicy dumplings, and all kinds of chili-loaded goodness.

A newly issued sales tax permit points to January 2027 when the permit will be active. Maybe an opening sometime in early 2027 could be in the cards. We’ll have to wait for details whenever a formal announcement is made.

Best roll for a Philly Cheesesteak

Kroger has shaved steak on sale so Cheesesteaks are on the menu. I’m not buying bulk Amoroso’s Rolls from Restaurant Depot. H.E.B. Sub rolls were ok tearing out the middle last time.

Southern Help me choose a Chicken Fried Steak joint

UK foodie and regular visitor to Houston here. Returning in a couple of weeks and need to get my CFS fix. I'll be staying in the West Houston/Energy Corridor area.

I like the sound of the Tuesdays-only Chicken Fried Ribeye at Killen's BBQ. Is it worth the one hour round trip to Cypress?

Alternatively, I see Midway BBQ also do a Ribeye, and it's much closer. Any good?

Also closer is Mia's Table, and I like the sound of their Jalapeno Cream Gravy. I'm also hearing Texas Tradition serves up a decent version.

Open to any alternatives to these. I've already been to Hickory Hollow (probably my favourite; that brown gravy is excellent), Avalon Diner, Dot Coffee Shop and Kelley's Country Cookin'.

Restaurant Opening/Closing Din Tai Fung is opening at The Galleria in Houston!

Post image
59 Upvotes

Sorry, I really only expected to post once in this sub today, but this is a pretty big one to share! Din Tai Fung is coming to The Galleria! The Taiwanese restaurant is famous for its soup dumplings (xiao long bao), but the menu goes way beyond dumplings with things like steamed buns, wontons, noodles, fried rice, greens and other dishes.

According to a filing today, Din Tai Fung will be taking over Nobu’s space at 5115 Westheimer Rd., Suite C-3515, which means Nobu is apparently on its way out in the near future. The dim sum restaurant aims to open sometime next year. It could be late summer or sometime in the fall, that is all dependent on when they're approved for permitting and if renovations go smoothly.

With Houston finally getting a Din Tai Fung and I KNOW people are about to have opinions. Who’s already planning their first order? Do you think it will hold up to some of our awesome dim sum restaurants in town?

How Houston's El Rey restaurant survived a changing area along Washington Avenue

I enjoyed reading this write-up of El Rey and this location's staying power on the corner of Washington Ave and Shepherd Dr. It's been open at 910 Shepherd Dr since the late 1990s serving Cuban and Mexican food. Hope you guys enjoy it too.

Fun fact I learned in a Houston food group on Facebook this year: If you noticed the building's design is similar to that of the city's popular #1 Chicken & Rice restaurant in the Third Ward, that's because like the building on Almeda, this too was previously a Jim Dandy Fried Chicken restaurant. They used to be all over Houston until I think Church's Chicken took over some (or maybe all) the locations in the 80s. Church's didn't last too long there with Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) opening there in the mid-90s for a short time.

BBQ Popular Houston BBQ pop-up is opening a permanent spot in the Heights

So after sitting empty since Le Café Josephine closed last year, the building at 201 E 20th St. is getting a pretty interesting next chapter.

Khoi Barbecue is opening their brick-and-mortar restaurant in the Heights, and I’m excited about this one. Occupancy permits issued last week for the address list Khói Barbecue as the occupant.

The Vietnamese-fusion BBQ pop-up was recently awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand, too.

For those who have tried Khoi, what are your favorite dishes?

Sushi Sushi places that don’t use mirin?

Any local sushi spots that don’t use alcohol or alcohol based ingredients? Are there any that let you request without it or use alternatives like rice vinegar?

Humor The next time I go to a restaurant that has no prices displayed on their menu or on the website I’m going to call them at 12:05pm the next day and ask the price for every individual item.
