When I was a kid in the 70s I fell in love with anything spooky or funny. The “House of…” series were always my favorites.
This one looks to have cover art by the late great Neal Adams.

I normally go to the LCS each weekend. I decided to go today (Tuesday) at lunch to pick up the Transformers UK Compendium 2 that I had seen there on the weekend. I was on the fence if I was going to go but then I thought maybe today is my lucky day so I went. The first thing I do everytime is look at the magazine boxes to see if they have any Vampirella, Creepy or Eerie magazines. No Vampirella but then I see some Eerie, maybe a dozen priced $4 to $20 each. I grabbed the 3 under $10. Then I saw the Creepy, holy smokes!!!! I ended up getting 45 back issues priced $3 to $8 each. I took every issue under $10. If they didnt have so many maybe I would have grabbed the $10 issues. All in all I got 45 issues of Creepy and 3 Eerie. They probably had another 25 issues priced $10 or more including Creepy #2. I tend to go for quantity over quality. I know thats odd to a lot of people.

Just last week I bought a bundle of all the Creepy/Eerie Archives digitally, and i thought i guess I dont have to buy any more..... lol.

I was never into these magazines until maybe 3 years ago. I now have 49 issues of Creepy, 11 Eerie and 14 Vampirella.

This probably was one of my biggest 'scores' since I started buying comics in 1989.

Beyond the Unknown

My virtual collection has grown with this 25 issue series that started in 1969. Some of the stories come from repackaged 1950 comics...but they are a fun read. Although it has horror elements at times, it has more of a Twilight Zone vibe.

Is This The Greatest Horror Cover Ever?

To celebrate what would have been Bernie Wrightson's 78th Birthday, lets look at the top comic covers drawn by him. Coming in 5th is 1973's House of Mystery #217 from DC Comics. Wrightson's terrifying tree monster looming over two young women is a classic example of his ability to make ordinary nature horrifying. It appeared during DC's celebrated Bronze Age horror period, with interior artwork by artists including Nestor Redondo and Alfredo Alcala. In 4th place is another DC comic, Swamp Thing #9 from 1974 has Wrightson's monstrous figure emerging from the swamp, surrounded by fiery orange and black, it is among the most admired covers of his original run. The issue features Len Wein's science-fiction horror story "The Stalker from Beyond!" While the story isn't the series' most famous, collectors repeatedly single out this cover for its lighting, anatomy and extraordinary composition. In 3rd place is Batman: The Cult #1 from 1988, Wrightson's painted cover depicts Batman above a bloodstained Gotham City sewer grate, perfectly establishing the horror beneath Gotham. Written by Jim Starlin, this critically respected four-issue miniseries explores Batman's physical and psychological breakdown at the hands of Deacon Blackfire. The strength of the story, Batman's popularity and Wrightson's unsettling artwork place this comfortably in the top three. Second place goes to DC's Swamp Thing #1 from 1972. The unforgettable image of Swamp Thing towering over two terrified figures established the visual identity of one of DC's most enduring horror characters. The issue introduced Alec Holland's version of Swamp Thing and began the acclaimed collaboration between Wrightson and writer Len Wein. Its origin story, "Dark Genesis," won the 1972 Shazam Award for Best Individual Story, giving this iconic cover an equally important comic beneath it. The number cover drawn by Bernie Wrightson has got to be 1971's House of Secrets #92, arguably Wrightson's most historically important comic-book cover, this haunting depiction of a frightened woman unaware of the monster approaching her introduced Swamp Thing to readers for the first time. The eight-page Len Wein story features the original Alex Olsen incarnation, predating Alec Holland. Frequently celebrated among the greatest Bronze Age horror covers, its extraordinary collector demand, historical significance and instantly recognizable composition make it my definitive number one.

I gotta say…definitely not a fan of how they wrote the Vanessa Van Helsing character. Maybe that’s what makes this such a gross feeling read…it is a horror comic after all, not boots and capes.

TALES OF VOODOO MAGAZINE - 1968-1974 -

Eerie Publications published TEN different comic anthology magazines from 1966-1981. They mostly featured reprints of pre-comics code (the industry made a code in 1954 to address an increasing public anxiety towards comics, specifically them being aimed at both little kids & war veterans. I understand the issue, but i also love that audience crossover.) but there were also new comics, all black & white with the hyper-lurid covers of a full monster mash, buxom broads in distress all painted in a krazed, carnival palette, with wild lettering that hard sold each story. Truly awe-inspiring, life affirming stuff. x SEAN

This is one of my favorite “oh shit” buys from recent years. It was on my want list for some time and found it in the bins for a steal. I don’t often buy ratio variants but this one hits a little different.

Traditional Inking process for my horror comic, THE ESTRANGED

Here's a look at how I ink my comic pages traditionally, bringing the shadows and darker atmosphere of the story to life.

THE ESTRANGED is an independent sapphic horror thriller written by Jason McNamara, illustrated by me, Matthieu Pereira, and colored by Dave Kemp.

It's available right now on Kickstarter!

What do you think of the traditional inking process?

You can see more videos of pencils or inking on my YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/@matthpereiraart or Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/matthpereiraart?cplk=dGVjNzJibnExODRl

Just picked this beautiful issue of House of Mystery #256 up. Key comics has it listed as a key but it’s actually not considered a major mainstream key. So why even say it is I guess. However it is highly sought after issue by collectors and was very hard to find one in excellent condition reasonably priced.
It’s iconic Bernie Wrightson cover art.
