Trip Report Trip report: 2-weeks Japan in October

Post image
108 Upvotes

It's my last day in Japan. Taking the time to reflect… on my packing.

My initial post can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HerOneBag/s/bGuWwBhJbk

Two weeks in Tokyo, Kyoto and Hakone. Temperatures ranged from 20C to 30C, with three days of nonstop rain in Hakone. We did laundry twice at laundromats.

I traveled with a single carry-on: a small North Face Base Camp Duffel. The goal was to stay within the 8 kg limit. The scale at the airport said 5.5 kg, so there was some room for a few small souvenirs.

The most common advice I got was to pack a second pair of shoes, to give my feet a rest and in case one pair got wet. Controversially, I brought just one pair, and it was mostly fine. The only thing I missed in Hakone was rain boots. My shoes got soaked. But since I don't own any rainboots, I would never have packed them anyway. Catch-22.

Overall, my wardrobe worked very well. One of the most valuable comments was that at some point in October, temperatures drop. They did, from 30C to 20C overnight. Being able to layer made it easy to navigate.

I got the Uniqlo Easy Pants in cotton for the plane and wore tights underneath. I absolutely loved them and felt like the coolest bean on the planet wearing them almost every day.

The scarf and beanie were mostly for the flight, knowing I'd arrive back home to 10C.

What would I do differently next time?

The second light pair of pants wasn't needed. Two pairs of bottoms would have been enough for two weeks.

The button-down drop shirt wasn't ideal. I found plain T-shirts to be more versatile. It was also the only top that would have benefited from some ironing after washing.

I packed one top fewer than I needed, expecting to do some shopping, which I didn't end up doing. The overconsumption culture in Tokyo made me want to shop less, especially for brands I can also buy at home.

Image description:
3 pairs of black pants: Uniqlo Easy pants, Dariadeh Lyocell wide-leg pants, Closed Barrel Leg pants
Patagonia rain jacket
2 long-sleeve tops: H&M navy striped, Colorful Standard burgundy
3 short-sleeve tops: COS navy striped tee, COS white tee, Muji grey button-down
Princess Tam.Tam navy fleece vest
Burgundy beanie, colorful silk scarf, amber sunglasses
Salomon XT-6 trail runners

Not pictured: 6 pairs of socks and underwear, PJs and tights. Besides clothing, I brought toiletries, a small tech pouch and a neck pillow. Also packed a lightweight Patagonia daypack.

Wardrobe Help Merino Wool brands with more "modern" silhouette?

I'm a small Asian and all my merino wool pieces are from Icebreaker and Smartwool but I only really use them for hiking because they don't align with my usual style lol. The biggest gripe I have is they're always too fitted and long but I prefer boxy, semi-crop for everyday wince that style makes me look more proportioned.

Any leads to brands I can look at?

Trip Report Mini Trip Report: Toiletries Usage for 5 weeks

I didn't OneBag for a recent 35 day trip to Taiwan that was a mix of hiking and city, but I did try to minimize my toiletries, so here's how much I used for the duration of the trip:

  • 4g of eye cream (so ~30% of a 0.5oz tube).
  • less than 40g of facial sunscreen but not sure how much less. I also should have reapplied (which I didn't do), so I'd say 40g was the correct amount to bring.
  • ~2mL of neem oil (applied to breakout areas).
  • ~25mL of cleansing oil. This was less than expected; I had overpacked at 50mL.
  • ~15mL of hyaluronic acid serum as my main moisturizer. I brought 25mL and really should have applied it more to my neck and limbs, but got lazy.
  • ~10mL of hair oil. I didn't wash my hair daily, so I'm thinking 15mL will be safe for daily washing.
  • ~5oz of body sunscreen, and that was only covering my neck & chest most days hiking with the addition of arms in the city. If I wore shorts, I would have run out of body sunscreen.
  • ~10 DEET wipes. Should have used them more often -- f'ing mosquito bites in central Taiwan gave me water blisters.
  • ~15mL of Nizoral shampoo (used 1x week).
  • almost an entire 1.6oz deodorant stick, but that was mostly driven by MrA running out a couple weeks into the trip and using mine.
  • ~1.5oz of a shampoo bar. Many places had a "shampoo + body wash in one" dispenser, and I didn't trust that on my hair.
  • 30mL of conditioner, which was not enough and I used up. I brought a sample of solid conditioner (was shit) that I used up first. Turns out that Taiwan hotels rarely provide conditioner, which I didn't expect. I probably should have caved and bought a small bottle of local conditioner but I went without and was a frizz ball the entire trip (apparently my conditioner didn't work for the local water+humidity).
  • ~2oz bar of triple milled soap. Used both for washing silicone pasties and for my body. Used in conjunction with a Salux cloth which was essential because I was sweating so much.

ETA: I have a solid face cleanser in a push up tube, but I didn't think to weigh the tube before the trip, so I don't have any idea how much of that I used. But I've been using the same push tube for a couple years, so it lasts a long time.

Bag Advice 12 days in Australia with a 30L bag. What would you cut?

I’m going to Australia for 12 days in December. I’ll be in Sydney and Melbourne, with a couple of beach days and maybe a day hike.

I’m taking a Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC 30L with no checked luggage. I’ll do laundry during the trip. The tech is what worries me most. It may take up too much of the bag.

Here’s the list.

Clothes

• 4 T shirts

• 1 Patagonia Capilene long sleeve

• 2 pairs of shorts

• 1 pair of lightweight pants

• 1 Patagonia Torrentshell

• 5 pairs of underwear

• 5 pairs of socks

• 1 swimsuit

• 1 hat

• Hoka Clifton 9, worn on travel days

• Teva sandals

• Laundry bag

Not sure if I need the pants and rain shell in Sydney and Melbourne in December. The sandals are for the beach and hotel, but I could leave them out.

Toiletries

• Toothbrush and travel toothpaste

• Small shampoo and body wash

• Deodorant

• Basic medication

• Contact lenses and spare glasses

• Sea to Summit Airlite towel

• Sunscreen, bought after arrival

Tech

• 13 inch MacBook Air

• iPhone 15 Pro

• iPad mini

• Sony earbuds

• Anker 10,000mAh power bank

• Gitryin Nexus 140W charger

• Australian Type I adapter

• A few short cables

I need the MacBook for work. The iPad may be unnecessary. The Gitryin charger replaces a few charging bricks, but I still need to weigh it.

Camera

• Fujifilm X100VI

• Spare battery

• Spare SD card

• Lens cloth

• Wrist strap

• Small rain cover

Other

• Passport and travel documents

• Bellroy wallet

• Eagle Creek packing cubes

• Eye mask and earplugs

• Owala water bottle

• Sunglasses

• Small first aid kit

The camera, tech, and one change of clothes will stay near the top. The power bank will stay in the backpack.

Would you drop the iPad, sandals, or rain shell first? Is this enough clothing for Sydney and Melbourne in December? Has anyone done a trip this long with a 30L bag?

Wardrobe Help How do you ladies stay dry when taking public transport?

I live in the PNW and we drive everywhere. We never use umbrellas So a rain jacket and tennis shoes is all we really need. But I am thinking about traveling to Paris or Tokyo mid February. I would be able walk a lot in cold damp weather. I would like to not enter a museum or a cafe soaked. Trench and umbrella?? Rain resistant paints and short rain jacket? What works for you ladies when in the city and it’s raining? Thank you for your input.

Bag Advice Kanken Laptop 15 for Personal Item in Canada: Anything better?

Hi, I live in Canada and travel every few years to Asia to visit relatives and close friends. In Canada, the personal item size is quite small (for Westjet, it's 16 in. X 6 in. X 13 in.), and sometimes airline crew check if one's bag fits in the sizer. When I travel to Asia, I need my bag to be light because of the weight restrictions. For these reasons, I have been using my Kanken Laptop 15, which is small, lightweight yet durable because of the G1000 material, and easy to pack. I love that it has an external laptop pocket as well. However, I don't like that it doesn't have a chest strap and a luggage pass-through. Can anyone please help me find a bag that is similar to Kanken Laptop 15 but has these two said features? Thank youuu!

I absolutely LOVE this subreddit and have been checking out clothing posts non stop. As I will be traveling in 2 weeks, I wanted to post my capsule that I’m going to pack for my Hong Kong Trip. I hope it’s fine to post here as I will be using a suitcase but will try to act as if I only had a carry one to minimise what I’m bringing and have enough space for some shopping & some souvenirs.

So excited to see what everyone thinks! I will be able to use a washing machine halfway through so I should be more than fine in terms of how many times I can wear the tank tops and shirts.

Let me know if you think I’m missing something! I definitely tried to pack some of my favourite pieces that are breathable and nice to wear! My ultimate goal is to have nice outfits ready to go that I feel great in and that are going to be comfortable.

Here’s a list of all items:

Shirts

- Striped oversized Øst London T-shirt

- 2 Notbasics white T-shirts

- Fitted white T-shirt (thrifted)

- Green oversized Mt. fuji Shirt - Ovo Japan

- Black pointedly tank - St. George

Jumpers

- Uniqlo thin thermal shirt

- Blue Girlfriend Collective breathable material jumper

- Yellow tank top MintVelvet

- Grey Notbasics Tank Top

- Blue knitted tank top

Trousers / Skirts

- Damson Madder Denim Skirt

- River Island Mesh Skirt

- Good american Dark denim jeans (with stretch)

- Linen trousers

- Uniqlo Skort

Jackets/ extra layers

- Trench style jacket

- Denim Jacket

- Crochet style cardigan top

Anything else:

- Salomon Hiking Shoes (Will be used for some hikes and walking around)

- Mango Cap

- Sunnies

- Dark red / purple Peak Design slingback for daily use / my camera

Bits & Bobs Blanket Question

I want my blanket for the flight to fit into my bag. The older blankets were to thin. My new blanket is fluffy and “compact” (for a fluffy blanket) but if I stick it in my bag it takes up half of the space. I run really cold so it is a necessity.

Has anyone found a blanket that is actually compact and warm? Or is this just one of those bulky items you have to deal with and either clip to the back of bag or deal with too much space in bag?

Edit:
Thank you for all the suggestions! After searching your recommendations it led me down a rabbit hole to the gravel layover travel blanket. 😅 its a splurge for sure but its meeting my hyper specific needs.

Parent or Caregiver Travel Tips & Tricks when Onebagging with Babies & Kids

I have been fortunate enough to do multiple one-bag trips with my now 2.5 year old and wanted to pass on some tips and tricks I have learned along the way, as well as see what other parents are doing with their kids when traveling!

Here are some of my tips, and what are some of yours?

- Walmart Same Day Delivery to hotels - While you pay an extra fee (I think usually around $10), this has been so helpful! We used to walk, Uber, or take public transportation to a Walmart, Target, or CVS to grab extra diapers, medicine, etc. But this spring I did a Walmart delivery to the hotel and it was amazing! They dropped the items off at the front desk, and we didn’t need to take the extra time to shop for more diapers, wipes, and snacks. I plan on doing this again for supplies we would buy at our destination!

- Baby Wearing - especially when your baby is young (18mo or younger) - Such a life saver, and you can be much more mobile without a stroller! While I don’t wear my toddler much now, when he was a baby I often ditched the stroller and it was so freeing. It was also great when breastfeeding - I could feed him in the carrier while continuing whatever adventure we were on. And when he was older, back carrying him was great for longer walks!

- Mini Toy Bin - I have a curated toy “bin” in my purse that has small toys that I occasionally change out. Perfect for keeping my toddler occupied when we need to sit for a while at a restaurant or wait in line. Currently it has a bead necklace, 2 matchbox cars with doors that open, and mini resin ducks I found at Walmart.

- Baby Wipes in Sandwich Ziplock Bag - I keep a minimal/curated “diaper bag”/purse, and rather than packing a full sized bag of wipes I put 10-15 wipes in a Ziplock bag, individually folded. It’s the perfect amount to clean toddler after eating or playing, change a diaper if needed, and some extra if I get dirty too! And then when I’m home/back at the hotel, I refill my purse.

Wardrobe Help Building travel capsule wardrobe for 1st time

What's a general rule of travel capsule wardrobe to pack light? Travel in Spring/Summer weather ( I don't wear shorts or tank tops).

Assuming 2-week vacation ( then cut in half for 1-week vacation).

For 2 weeks I'm thinking: 5 tops, 3 pants, 1 lightweight cardigan, 2 dresses ( or skirts), 2 bras, 7 undies and 3 pairs of shoes with 3 pair socks, 2 sleepwear, 1 swimsuit - if needed.

1 week: 3 tops, 2 pants, 1 lightweight cardigan, 1 dress or skirt, 2 bras, 4 undies, 2 pairs of shoes, 2 pair socks, 1 sleepwear, 1 swimsuit if needed.

Is this too little or too much? What do you do? I ask because I haven't actually traveled light like this , its still a concept not yet tested. This is clothes only, didn't account for toiletries & electronics.

Wardrobe Help Southeast Asia Trip- 3 weeks- December

Hey everyone,

I do need help in trying to decide bottoms for my upcoming trip in Dec, where temperatures are expected between 0-10 degrees C.
I am planning to take 26+ 6 Osprey bag.
I am taking 1 Uniqlo heat tech (as base layer); 1 merino wool base layer; 1 fleece jacket; 1 half sleeves merino wool t shirt; 3 dress tops; 1 merino wool base layer bottoms. However, I always wear jeans but now with winter traveling, I want something more light weight.
What bottoms do you suggest on top of merino
Wool base layer- which are light weight, can take less space in backpack?

For outer layer jacket- I am confused between pajar jacket (good atleast until -30c) or heat tech Columbia jacket (good until 0C).

Thank you for your help!

Countries visiting : Japan and Korea

Lighten My Load To 1.5 bag or not to 1.5 bag (November in NZ) & packing feedback

Thumbnail

Hi all,

I'm going to New Zealand for the entirety of November, starting on the north island (Auckland, Hobbiton & Wellington) for a bit over a week and then the rest on the south island (Picton, Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown, Te Anau and Christchurch again). I will be doing a mix of things including hiking (part of the Kepler Treck, some lighter hiking in Waitakere Ranges and near Akaroa), lots of walking, some cruises (Milford and Marlborough Sounds), wildlife tours, some city exploring, some adventure sports – a bit of everything.

Now, I have a bit of a dilemma. I've one bagged before but only for shorter trips. Technically, my things all fit in my small American Tourister cabin bag and my under-seat bag (1.5 bagging), but I don't think it will leave much room for souvenirs and shopping. So either, I'll have to ditch the idea of 1.5 bagging and go for the bigger suitcase, or I have to lighten my load.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this to help me make a decision before I hop on the plane next week. I'm so torn. Any feedback on my packing choices is much appreciated, too! I'll have access to laundry in a few of my accommodations, but not necessarily the time for it. So I expect to do laundry maybe 3 times in total. I will be travelling by plane, train, and bus. Weight limits vary, but I wouldn't exceed the minimum no matter the bag size.

Please don't suggest a backpack – I don't like travelling with two backpacks & don't want to invest in new luggage. I'm used to travelling with suitcases.

Thank you! I love this subreddit so much & am always nosy about what other people pack 🥰

Image descriptions/packing list:
Not pictured: swimsuit, 5x basic socks, contents of essentials pouch (listed below, though), lightweight hiking poles, floss, scrunchie and hair claw, my prescription meds and contacts

1) Images of clothing items & two suitcases

  • Burgundy corduroy jacket (cotton)
  • Uniqlo Heattech beanie
  • Adidas cap
  • Lakor brimmed hat (waterproof) with chin strap
  • Uniqlo Heattech long sleeve
  • Girlfriend Collective sports top
  • H&M sports top (I'll wear both casually, they're just nifty cause I don't need a bra)
  • Lee denim shorts
  • 2x floral midi skirts from Monki (with pockets!)
  • 2x lightweight trousers from Uniqlo (quick drying)
  • Sunnies

  • 10x Boody knickers
  • Dilling merino sleep set (long johns)
  • Biker shorts for under skirts
  • Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX shoes (my main walking shoes)
  • Pink patent Birkenstocks (I am used to walking a ton in them in the summer)
  • American Tourister spinners: sizes S (cabin bag) or M (I have done a trial pack in both suitcases and the S fits everything but leaves very little room while the M is only half full when packed...)

2) Images of active wear and accessories

  • 2x Uniqlo sports leggings (with pockets!)
  • Uniqlo UV hoodie (very lightweight)
  • 2x Decathlon UV surf shirts (I wear these for hiking)
  • Eyda 2-in-1 shorts (with pockets!)

  • Mountain Warehouse fleece (for layering under rain jacket)
  • 2x Dilling merino long sleeves
  • Merino balaclava (used as buff)
  • 3x merino hiking socks
  • 2x sports bras
  • Leather gloves

  • Wallet, hand sanitiser, glasses & Loop earplugs
  • Packable tote (folds down to almost nothing)
  • Packable day pack (folds down very small)
  • Uniqlo mini crescent bag
  • 2.5 litre dry bag from Decathlon (I hike in all weather & will also go kayaking)
  • Water bottle & electrolyte tabs (less for nutrition and more for flavour tbh)
  • Notebook and pen
  • Snacks (dried mango, snack pretzels and jellybeans – all will be finished before arrival)
  • Under-seat bag

4) Images of assorted tech items

  • Camera, SD card adapter & charger (not pictured are my SD cards)
  • iPhone, iPad & Apple Watch + chargers
  • ANC headphones (another non-negotiable)
  • Earbuds
  • Power bank and universal plug

  • Toiletry bag
  • Makeup tools
  • BB powder, concealer, contour and lip stick
  • Cleanser and shampoo bar
  • Detergent sheets
  • Fussy deodorant
  • Hair brush

Bag Advice Backpack with a safe laptop compartment

Hi, can anyone recommend a backpack w/ a safe laptop compartment?
gonna be using it for a lot of travel and I need to bring my work laptop with me so I'm looking for one with a really good padding and waterproof.

Also large enough to fit my clothes too for mostly 3-5days trip, I'm bringing a hand-carry only as I don't want the hassle of checking-in a bag.. I pack pretty lightly when it comes to clothes

my airline dimension for handcarry is up to:
H - 56cm / 22in
L - 36cm / 14in
W - 23cm / 10in
weight limit: 10kg

**my laptop weighs 1.63kg (or up to 2kl inc. charger/mouse)
***also, something lightweight so it doesn't take too much of the handcarry weight limit, but thick enough that my laptop will be protected
****preferably a backpack, not a suitcase
*****also a plus if available in the Philippines

Wardrobe Help 6 weeks in Australia (+3 days in Taiwan)

Post image
39 Upvotes

I’m about to set off for a six week trip to Australia. I’m stopping in Taipei for 3 days on the way. In Australia, I’ll be in Sydney and Melbourne. Dates are all of November and half of December.

It’s my first time in either of these countries and I’m not hugely confident in my planned wardrobe. I’m staying with family in Australia so I know I’ll be able to borrow a jumper if it gets cooler, but I’m unsure about whether my clothes and shoes are versatile enough for both cities. I’m not planning any intense excursions or anything – I think it’ll be more beach and city and nice walks, but nothing where I think I’d need any special activewear (the shorts are more for being around the house).

I’ve only got one overshirt and I imagine I’d probably want something covering my arms from the sun every day, so I might need two options there. The hoodie is mainly for the plane but also if it gets cold in Melbourne.

I can’t imagine I’ll be going out at night, but I don’t know whether my wardrobe would be suitable for going out to eat at nice (not super fancy) restaurants, in particular my shoes.

I just got the navy Uniqlo barrel trousers for the plane and wonder if they might actually be able to replace the jeans entirely – though those jeans do feel like a sartorial security blanket and are super comfy!

Taiwan weather is looking pretty warm and humid right now so I think I’ll probably be okay, but any observations about that would be great too.

With pyjamas and underwear I’m somehow already struggling for space in my suitcase, and I think my (yet to be packed) toiletries and other misc items will fill up my backpack. I’d like to have some wiggle room for anything I want to bring back.

Bags

·         it luggage convertible 50cm underseat Suitcase (26L)

·         40x30x20 underseat backpack (24L)

·         Baggu medium crescent (not using this as luggage, just for when I’m there)

Clothes

Tops

·         3x short sleeve shirts

·         1x linen vest top

·         1x linen overshirt

Bottoms

·         1x navy barrel trousers (lightweight)

·         1x green linen trousers

·         1x cropped jeans

·         1x gym shorts

Outerwear

·         1x lilac waterproof jacket

·         1x dark green hoodie

Underwear (not pictured)

·         underwear and socks (5x each, plus 1 I’ll wear to travel)

·         2 bras (plus 1 I’ll wear to travel)

Other

·         1x swimming costume

·         1x navy button up dress

·         1x long sleeved pyjama set (not pictured)

Shoes

·         New Balance trainers (wearing to travel)

·         Black Teva sandals

I haven’t packed anything else yet so unsure of the quantity/volume of other things I’m bringing, but like I said, it’s feeling tight already!

EDIT: I'm coming from Scotland so a much cooler climate.

Wardrobe Help ~3 months in Asia

Post image
70 Upvotes

Hi all, I'm going to Asia for the first time and it'll be my first extended solo trip (longer than 2 weeks), so open to any tips and advice for this region!

The general plan is South Korea -> China -> Vietnam -> Cambodia -> Thailand, and then go from there. I'll be arriving in SK November 1st, and I'm planning for a ~3 month trip, but it's a one-way ticket for now ;)

Here's my test pack so far: everything could theoretically fit in the big 30L bag, so the 20L bag is basically empty for any shopping. I don't have a scale accessible to me, but I'm certain it's over 7kg combined. I'm also planning to buy things there, like maybe some tailored items when I'm in Vietnam, but wanting to travel light and cover my bases.

Bags:

  • 30L Mini MLC
  • 20L "Work" Backpack
  • Fanny pack

Clothes (pictured)

  • Tops
    • 2x long sleeve shirt (one with built-in bra)
    • 4x short sleeve shirts (one with built-in bra)*
    • 2x black bra top (1 sports, one just a ribbed fabric)
  • Bottoms
    • 1x black long wide leg pants (very thin)
    • 1x black stretchy yoga pants*
    • 1x brown shorts with pockets
    • 1x black bike shorts with pockets
    • 1x black leggings with pockets
  • Outerwear
    • 1x brown collared long sleeve shirt I also use as a layer
    • 1x grey fleece quarter zip*
  • Underwear
    • underwear and socks
    • 2 bras (1 can turn strapless, 1 basic nude bra)
  • Other
    • 1x 2 piece swim set
    • 1x black ankle length dress ankle length, could double as swim cover-up
    • baseball cap
  • Shoes
    • running shoes*
    • teva sandals

*wear on flight

Note: for PJs, I'm thinking of using the leggings/bike shorts + a bratop/shirt

Toiletries:

  • basic makeup (cream blush, eyeliner, tinted lip balm) and skincare (cleanser, moisturizer)
  • trial size shampoo, conditioner
  • deodourant
  • hair ties
  • manual toothbrush, toothpaste, floss
  • retainer and case
  • nail clippers, tweezers
  • 1x microfibre towel, beach towel size
  • some pads to get me started
  • laundry detergent sheets

Tech: phone (unlocked with global travel data), laptop (sigh), camera

  • universal travel wall plug and adapters
  • 2x usbc-usbc cord
  • 1x usba-usbc cord
  • 1x 20,000mah portable charger
  • wireless earbuds
  • Extra camera battery and charger

Other:

  • glasses case
  • bandages and alcoholic wipes
  • travellers diarrhea medicine
  • hand sanitizer
  • passport
  • wallet with cards and some cash
  • filter water bottle
  • ear plugs, eye mask and face mask
  • notebook and pen
  • padlock
  • 2x carabiners
  • rain poncho

Things I'm planning to get there:

  • a rain shell
  • sunscreen
  • sunglasses
  • headscarf/coverup
  • a more stylish EDC/purse?

Welcoming all feedback and thought about the packing and beyond (esp since it's my first time in the area), but I also have some questions/concerns:

  • Bringing the laptop because I'm on the job hunt and for the peace of mind, but maybe I could get away with a tablet instead?
  • It's a very drab colour palette -- all dark/black :( any tips on adding colour to this?
  • I feel like I'm missing trousers of sorts, like a thicker pant
  • While I'm definitely buying a waterproof outer layer there, I still feel incomplete travelling without one

Wardrobe Help Another millenial in Japan, critique my packing :)

Hi all, long-time lurker, first-time poster! This sub has helped me a lot while planning. This is my first big trip overseas (and to Japan!), and I'd love your feedback before I finalize my list. I'm not at the level of many of you yet, but I'm working toward one backpack someday, and I also want to feel cute while I'm there!

Trip: Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, plus a couple of days in Takanawa. Mostly western hotels, with one night in a ryokan and one night in a hotel with an onsen. I'll have access to laundry during the trip but I'd rather not use my time on it much. Lots of walking (I expect 15-25k steps a day).

Weather I'm planning for: highs around 20°C at the start, dropping to about 16°C by mid-November, with lows between 7 and 15°C. I'll be there from 29 Oct to 12 Nov btw.

Bags: carry-on, plus a Patagonia sling bag, a Uniqlo crescent crossbody for daily use, and a Shupatto foldable tote for the flight and for shopping.

Top: graphic tee, two beige tees, brown tee, green striped short-sleeve knit, striped oversized long-sleeve tee, white long-sleeve tee, and Heattech long sleeves in brown and white. Everything is cotton except the Heattech

Layers: two cardigans (one cotton, one synthetic), dark gray cotton hoodie (for the plane), quilted cotton jacket for day visits, Patagonia rain jacket for rainy days.

Bottoms: black stretchy wide-leg trousers, brown wide-leg trousers and gray wide-leg trousers. The brown and gray are suit-style but roomy and very comfortable for me. No jeans, since I don't trust them for that much walking

Shoes: New Balance, Asics, and flip-flops for western hotels

Accessories: cap, red knit neck scarf, swimsuit

Also packing but not shown: pajamas, 7 underwear, 6 pairs of socks. No umbrella, since I plan to buy one there + toiletries and the rest of my flight essentials, still WIP!

Travel day outfit:hoodie, long sleeve tee, black stretchy trousers, ASICS.

Questions:

  1. Is this too much, or about right for 16 days with laundry in a carry-on?

  2. Almost everything is cotton apart from the Heattech. Is that a problem for cool, sometimes rainy weather?

  3. Is the swimsuit worth bringing for a ryokan onsen, or should I leave it?

  4. What would you add or cut?

Thanks so much, and happy to answer anything about the trip!🌸

Bag Advice last minute advice for broken seam

if you were in my situation, would you try doing something about this the night before travelling?

im flying tomorrow morning, now it's 8pm here. just zipped my small carry-on bag up, not even tight, but it gave up. its been super sturdy and many years old, so no warranty i think.

my only idea at this point is a hot glue gun to keep it together, and maybe a gintonic for myself to keep it together.

if you would do something, what would you go for?

Techniques Advice on Carry On vs. Personal Item

Hi! I’m traveling internationally for the first time in November and will be on a 13-day CDMX trip. I’m really trying to fit all of my stuff in a personal bag and a carry on, but I feel a little stumped as to what bag seems most important. I have a regular Jansport Big Student backpack that I have taken on flights before and a regular carry on suitcase. I’m open to purchasing either a new backpack/personal item or a new carry on suitcase—which do you think is most important?

For backpacks I was considering the Cotopaxi Allpa 28L travel pack or the Calpak Terra 26L. For carry ons, I was mostly looking at Quince but am open to recommendations!

Image description: piles of clothes organized on a tan carpet.
Top row: travel outfit (medium blue H&M barrel leg jeans, gray Quince oversized knit cotton sweater, black cotton short sleeve tee), black long sleeve Amour Vert knit shirt, white short sleeve tee, gray shortsleeve tee, brown Uniqplo active wide leg pants, black Quince supersoft fleece wide leg lounge pants, black Uniqlo cropped knit sweater.
Second row: two swimsuits (black 2-piece for lounging and colorful design for swimming laps), black PJs and sleep bra, workout clothes (maroon tee shirt and black leggings) and sports bra, two piles of black day underwear and plum-colored period undies, six balled up socks.
Third row: plum-colored raincoat, brown floral dress, blue tank top romper.

My first attempt at 1.5 bags. I’ll be in Mexico (CDMX and San Miguel de Allende, and weather is transitioning from rainy to dry season and will be between 45-80F.

In total I have:
5 tops
4 bottoms
2 sweaters
1 rain jacket
1 romper
1 dress
1 PJs
2 swimsuits
6 pairs of socks

I plan on swimming some laps, going to Pilates, and having a photo shoot, so some of the seemingly doubled or specialty items are needed for those purposes! Hard to also bring these items which might only be used once or a few times?

Shoes not pictured and I’m planning on packing Hokas and wearing Blundstones, but wondering if I’ll need a third pair (waterproof Vessi’s) since there will still be rain daily for a while.

Also not pictured are a small bag of toiletries (planning on buying what I need for the month there) and 2 ziplocks of meds and snacks which will take up space on the way there, but will be consumed and give me a little space on the way back. Any advice?

Edited to improve item descriptions and correct total number of items. I'm realizing I'll probably need a puffer jacket too for cold mornings and evenings!

Packing Show & Tell Round Hair Brush 'Travel Case'

I finally found a solution to protect the bristles on my round hair brush when traveling!

I purchased these tubes and cut an X in the center of the cap for the handle to be pushed through - the caps are rubber.

Alternatively, you can purchase a tube that fits the entire length of the brush - it'll just take up more space (see last pic).

Wardrobe Help Best trousers for flying - UK specifically?

I'm about to travel from the UK to Australia and am looking to buy some trousers for the flights. Priorities are pockets, comfort and versatile enough to be part of my everyday wardrobe while I'm away.

UK brands, and ideally around the £30-40 mark max, as I really can't budget for much more than that. Thank you so much.

Bag Advice Advice bag cabin Asia trip

Hello

I'm looking for a comfortable and pratical bag for my three week trip to Vietnam. I need to stay within an 8kg limit and a size of 55x40x20.

What do you think of the cabin zero ADV 42L ? Or other sizes from this brand ?

There's the Decathlon Forclaz 30L but it seems too small

Thanks for your help !
