Hello dear HeadphoneAdvice community, I am looking to get myself a pair of wireless over-ear ANC headphones for my daily commute and occasional longer 8 hour travel via train. I'd also like to occasionally wear them around the house to tune out noisy neighbours. I am buying in Europe and willing to spend up to 500€.
I listen to electronic music (edm, hyperpop, indietronica), rock (indie rock, emo, metalcore), pop, r&b and hip-hop.
Now for my priorities:
1.Comfort:
I have a big head and wear glasses with thicker plastic frames so comfort is my top priority since it won't matter how good anything else is if I can't wear them for more than an hour. A gentle clamp, deep cushions and wider headband would be good. I've had to return the Sonos Ace Ultra for their strong clamping pressure that caused me a lot of pain behind my ears where my glasses frames rest after 45min.
Build Quality:
The build quality is also important to me as I've previously owned the Bose QC Ultra 2 which ticked all my boxes but the constant loud mechanical clunk in the right earcup was a deal breaker for me. I can accept some light sounds headphones may make but have some sensory issues and can't stand loud thumping or creaking like that. Also if I'm investing a large sum of money into a device I'd like it to last a couple years. I've used my Sony xmf-xm3 earbuds for 6 years now and only am replacing them due to them starting to reasonably have more and more issues.
ANC:
As these are mainly for commuting I need them to be decently capable of tuning out noise. Especially busy trains with screaming children or walking past loud construction can be very irritating to me. I don't need an absolute bubble of silence and just want the ANC to be good enough while media is playing to protect me from unpleasant noises. I also have noisy upstairs neigbours so being able to grab a pair of headphones to have some peace of mind would be a great help.
Sound Quality:
I do consider my preferences more in the audiophile direction. I have a set of Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro hooked up to an ifi zen dac at home on my PC. Obviously I don't expect a wireless Bluetooth headphone to perform anywhere near a wired open-back studio headphone but just wanted to use this as a reference for my preferred sound profile steering to a more flat and brighter sound. I found the Sonos Ace Ultra disappointing in this area as well as they felt a bit muffled and dark. But would have been happy to sacrifice sound to the level of the Ace if it had met my comfort needs since I really liked their build and ANC.
Battery Life:
Should be at least enough to get through a day but I think every headphone in this category is capable of around 24 hrs of playback. Would of course be happy with a bigger battery for less charging and overall less battery degradation as a result. Obviously models like the Sonos Ace Ultra and Sennheiser Momentum 5 are especially great here for offering a user replaceable battery.
Controls:
I'm not a big fan of touch controls so I would prefer buttons. But this is a major nitpick that I am flexible on so I am okay with touch controls as well.
I am exclusively looking to go for over-ears and no in-ears due to me having noticed the issues they cause me inside my ears like pain, earwax buildup and risk of pushing in things into my ear. I did clean them with a microfiber after each use but also find the maintance of them annoying as well as the try and buy of them being riskier due to some retailers treating them as a hygiene product.
Here are my top picks so far:
- Technics EAH-1000
Sound Quality and ANC seem to be top notch. It has button controls which I like. Many reviewers have said they are quite comfortable but one review said the clamp was tighter than the Sonos Ace Ultra which has me a little worried. I have ordered these to try them out for myself.
- Sony the Collexion
I can get these at 521€ so they do exceed the budget a bit but if they really could tick all my boxes I'd be willing to do so. They are often complemented for their great comfort and ANC. Sound Quality seems to be better than the regular XM5 or XM6. Just worried about Sony's usual build issues becoming a problem later. The battery life is also quite poor compared to others headphones in the category. Also lacking features like wired USB-C audio is odd for a headphone of this price. And ultimately price is what makes them a less attractive option.
- Sennheiser Momentum 5
This one seems quite great for Sound Quality at its price. ANC seems to be behind the other two models I've mentioned though and comfort might be an issue due to the tight clamping force. Also the earcups seem shallow and the headband cushioning while improved over Momentum 4 (which I also tried for a day and had to return due to top of head pressure pain) still seems not too comfortable. The user replacable battery is a huge plus though.
Anyways sorry for the long post. The search for the right headphone has been driving me a little crazy for a while and I would be deeply grateful for any help that this community could provide. I am open to other suggestions besides the ones I've mentioned these are just the ones currently in my close contenders list. As mentioned I have ordered the Technics to try now so hopefully they are a good choice for me but seeing how my return cycle has continued with headphones thought I'd try something new and seek outside advice as well.
Thank you kindly in advance to anyone who takes the time to read all this and respond I really appreciate it.
