News Hartlepool family services earn full UNICEF Baby Friendly status
thetees.org.ukHartlepool’s Best Start Family Hubs and Health Visiting Service have achieved full Baby Friendly accreditation from UNICEF UK, recognising the support offered to parents and babies across the borough.
The award follows an external assessment of how staff help families with infant feeding, early relationships and a baby’s development. Hartlepool Borough Council announced the result on 13 October, saying the standards are embedded across both services.
What the accreditation checks
UNICEF UK describes Baby Friendly as a staged programme rather than a one-off certificate. Services first put policies, staff education and monitoring in place, then demonstrate how that work reaches families. At the final stage, assessors visit the service and listen to mothers about the care they received.
The community standards cover four practical areas: helping people during pregnancy understand breastfeeding and early relationships; protecting and supporting breastfeeding; helping parents make informed decisions when introducing other food or fluids; and supporting a close, loving relationship between parent and baby.
That scope matters because the Hartlepool award covers community services rather than a maternity ward. UNICEF UK says its revised community framework applies to health visiting, specialist public health nursing, family hubs, children’s centres and similar early-years services. The standards were updated for assessments taking place from June 2026.
Accreditation confirms that the service passed UNICEF UK’s assessment process. It does not, on its own, provide local figures for breastfeeding rates or show how those rates have changed. Hartlepool Council’s announcement did not include outcome data, feedback scores or the date of the assessment visit.
Support for every feeding choice
The council says its approach is intended to help all mothers and babies build a close relationship, whatever feeding choice a family makes. Its Family Hubs offer infant-feeding and breastfeeding advice alongside help with sleep, routines, introducing solid foods, emotional wellbeing, early language development and perinatal mental health.
Health visitors work with families from pregnancy until a child is five, using home visits, telephone support and clinics.
Family Hub services extend further, supporting children and young people up to 19, or 25 for people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Local advice Security shifts
Hey everyone,
I’m looking to pick up some extra part-time or short-notice cover shifts alongside my main gig. Does anyone have active invite links to any reliable WhatsApp groups or broadcast channels for security shifts?
I hold a valid SIA.
Cheers!

History Does it still say IS 4 GAYS on the salvation army building?
Title. I remember seeing that graffiti in 2009 when it was brand new. It was washed off within a week but the big white letters were always clearly visible for well over a decade. Still there?

Local advice Randy Dog Walker
Keep an eye on your dog walker, hearing a lot of stories of a male walker based in Hartlepool who is asking for some “Extras” from female clients (especially married ones) when it comes time to pay for walks .
Avoiding putting any business names as to not break the community rules.

Discussion Views on Paedo Hunting Group O.M.W.D?
galleryThis group has been arranging 'protests' outside suspected paedos' houses.
The problem is, they are a bunch of complete morons and getting the wrong houses and terrifying people.
The fact that its run by Alan Saint, a convicted heroin dealer, says it all.

Local advice Scammed over a babies headstone. Beware
A few years ago i tried to get my baby twin sister a new headstone to replace the old one she had with her name spelt wrong (long story). And in the process I was scammed by Rikki Kinsella, from a company in Hartlepool called Graveside Memorials who left her with the mess of a headstone you can see in the picture. Whilst he is now being taken to criminal court by trading standards because it turns out he has done this to a lot of people, that could take years and I apparently don't have much chance of compensation because he is bankrupt. So now she's stuck with this and i feel sick with guilt.. i can't even bring myself to visit her grave anymore. All I can hope is that he gets a prison sentence. He is still trading under different names so please be careful.
I've set up a gofundme to try get it replaced asap, if anyone can donate or share it would greatly appreciate it 🙏

Discussion Tech meetups - what/where/when/how?!
Question for anyone working in tech in Hartlepool/surrounding area in general - what would encourage you to attend tech meetups (mainly around software development/AI/testing)? We are one of the fastest growing areas for tech but I find it incredibly difficult to find local meetups/networking events to get to know the tech community! I've tried to organise some myself and the sign up numbers appear decent but the actual turnout is really low. It feels like most tech meetups are centered around Newcastle/Sunderland but it would be great to get a more local community as it's a bit of a trek up there.
