2560. Over seven years after Covenant forces invaded the planet Criterion, its human survivors are still struggling to rebuild amid mounting resentment toward the Unified Earth Government. When separatists ambush a reconstruction convoy and steal critical equipment, Colonial Administration Authority Marshal Imani Havel uncovers a conspiracy far more dangerous than local rebellion.

With contact from Earth mysteriously silent and Criterion’s defenses stretched thin, Havel’s pursuit leads through abandoned industrial ruins and a vast graveyard of human and Covenant warships orbiting the planet. But as shadowy off-world operatives emerge from the darkness, she realizes the stolen resources are only the beginning—and that an unimaginable threat has already been set in motion.

Outmanned, outgunned, and with no Spartans coming to the rescue, Havel and a battered UNSC assault force must expose the enemy’s true plan before Criterion’s violent past comes crashing down upon its fragile future....

Very excited that this one’s releasing.

[Megathread] The Future of Halo under Activision

Hey everyone.

In case you missed the news, on September 22, Matt Booty shared this message with both XBOX employees and the wider internet.

Specifically, he mentioned that 268 roles would be eliminated at Halo Studios, various first-party studios and other sectors of XBOX.

Alongside this, it was announced that Activision would be developing the next Halo title.

"Activision will expand its remit to World’s Edge, as well as Rare. Activision will also be developing the next Halo title, led by a new, purpose-built team that is separate from ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty. A small team at Halo Studios will continue supporting the Halo community and games in-market."

Rob Kostich - Activision President - had this to say:

“We’re thrilled to welcome Halo, Rare, and World’s Edge to Activision. It’s an honor and a responsibility that we do not take lightly. These teams and their games have inspired fans around the world for decades,”

“For Halo, our goal is clear: make the greatest Halo game ever, worthy of its universe and legacy, while staying true to what made players love it in the first place. It is a bold ambition, one that this franchise deserves. We have already begun assembling a purpose-built team, unique in capability and talent, ready and excited to deliver this next chapter with the community."

Hollywood Reporter claims that the first Halo title that Activision will release will be a "full-feature, mainline installment into the franchise."

Following this news, various rumours about a potential reboot or soft reboot of the Halo franchise began to spread. As of now, this is precisely that - a rumour with no confirmed source.

With this news, there has naturally been a lot of discussion about the future of the Halo games, external media and everything in-between, including bringing up highly contentious topics such as the Human/Forerunner debate.

Going forward, new posts about reboots, the Human/Forerunner debate, etc will be directed to this post, as there have been multiple posts daily from different users who all want to share their two cents about this news, including multiple that have already been removed due to being identical and breaking other rules.

If you see any new posts going forward which relate to the things mentioned above, please report them and we'll get to it when we can.

Apologies it took this long to get a post up.

If Halo 2, Halo 3 and 4 could have subtitled names, what do you think they would be called?

As the title states, if Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4 could have subtitles what do you think would be good names? Im asking because other entries, namely Halo: CE, Halo 3: ODST, Halo Reach, Halo 5: Guardians and Halo (6): Infinite all seem to have thematic names. Combat evolved = the year is 2552 and we're fighting space jihadist. 3: ODST = the events of halo 3 from a ODST's perspective. Halo reach = the outbreak of the war on planet reach. 5: guardians = that stupid plot point about planet destroyers/teriformers that never gets brought up before or after (i hate halo 5). Finally infinite = the halo rings are building themselves. With all that being said im thinking halo 2 could maybe be "halo 2: revelations" a) because the covenant are on a crusade and revelations is a biblical passage and b) because Master Chief and The Arbiter both get the same revelation from the Gravemind. Im thinking halo 3 could be either "halo 3: finish the fight" as per the tag line during all the promotional material or "halo 3: a promise kept" because the whole game Master Chief is trying to get back to Cortana and he has visions of her. Lastly im thinking halo 4 could be "halo 4: reclaimer" as originally in 2010(?) 343 industries said that halo 4 was going to be a part of a new trilogy called the reclaimer trilogy (lol howd that go?) And within the story of halo 4 Master Chief is fighting a forerunner, the Didact, but gets revealed to him by the Librarian that he too is a forerunner, titled the reclaimer per 343 guilty spark's dialogue all the way back in Halo: CE, Chief just didn't really know what that meant until the Librarian told him and powered him up to resist the dusting laser. Now these are just my ideas i would really like to hear what other people would name those 3 halo games.

Please note: im going off memory for all of this, so if i got a lore piece mixed up, go ahead and correct me, but dont be rude.

I’m confused. What does War Chief Severan actually look like?

He was first shown in the art piece wielding the scythe and recently he’s shown with duel plasma daggers off his wrists. Which art piece of him is canon? Or are both canon?

Time & the domain

How does time work in the domain?

While reading Halo: Epitaph I got really confused on how time works in the domain, While months or years pass in the physical world considering that the didact was composed in 2557 and Halo 5 takes place in 2558 I felt that time within the Domain passed much faster.

Or maybe I’m just really dumb.

If Activision releases an Arbiter game telling events from Halo Reach up to Infinite, how would it all play out from Arbiter's side?

Would love to pick your brains and see what you'd like to experience from Arbiter's side of the story from Reach to Infinite.

How would the story play out? What missions would you like to play? What new characters would you love to see on screen in all of the Haloverse? What would you change from the current games?

Questions about humanity's colonies and colonisation:

  1. What was standard of living like across the outer colonies? I presume that it varied from World to world, with most if not all being below the standards the inner colonies had. Such as with education and amenities in general.

  2. Before the Human-Covenant, was humanity still colonising and terraforming new worlds? Or was most of that funding redirected to focus on the insurrection movement and focusing on the colonies they already had.

  3. How much did to cost to colonise and or terraform a world? I was wondering as I know the UEG has a few colonies run by/basically owned by corporate councils, and did they pay for the right to colonise those worlds and or terraform them?

Who actually created the character of Dr. Halsey?

I've looked into this and I'm still not sure whether she was wholly the product of Eric Nylund, or if Bungie had anything to do with developing her character.

Release Order

Hello dear people of Earth, feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Tho am I right in thinking that the novel „The Fall of Reach“ by Eric Nylund, was released in the year 2000, and the first Halo game „Combat Evolved“ came out 2001? Thus the book predates the games and sets the foundation for the universe and the first game elaborates what has happened after the events of the novel took place?

What are people's hopes for a post 343i Halo universe?

I realise that people that frequent this sub are likely to fall on one side of this discussion, but I find myself genuinely torn over how I'd prefer Activision to deal with the Halo EU.

*Preface - if you've had this discussion before, and are unhappy about other people having it, there are many other enjoyable threads to partake in.*

1) The Full Reset

Bin it all, and start again. This is the cleanest way, but I'm not sure how much enthusiasm there is for retelling a story that's already been told, and (mostly) told well. I imagine a lot of the formative elements would remain the same, unless they really go for an Ultimate Halo and attempt to radically change things. I'm not against that - we have precedent with the Silver timeline, and unlike the TV show you could even go the extra mile and not make it terrible.

2) Keep Everything

The messy way, and involves taking the good with the bad. It also leaves them in the same position that Disney were in 2015, with decades of canon to untangle and a waning audience of people who are following it. Anything post Halo 3 (and yes, I'm including Reach in this) is very unapproachable to anyone who doesn't fancy hours of homework.

There is, however, decades of human/covenant war to play with if you want to keep it simple and brush the Forerunner/Banished/naughty Cortana stuff under the rug. Probably the biggest problem (and this causes headaches in the books) is that personal shielding is only introduced right before Reach for SIIs. This introduces gameplay problems (though Halo Wars and ODST largely just handwaved the issue away) and it's always felt kind of silly how Spartans somehow survived 25 years without their big defining trait.

3) Keep some stuff

The question is - what do you keep? Just H1 to H3 is probably the most straightforward from the perspective of canon, but this leaves the MCC in an awkward position where half of it is now non-canon. You could just keep the games, but this leaves us in probably the worst position - if anything the books did an admirable job of patching the holes left by 343i's poor planning. I think it's generally misunderstood how much help reading the books is in parsing the mess of the games. Halo 4 certainly wasn't improved by reading the Forerunner Trilogy, and New Blood doesn't really help with Halo 5 much either.

So what are people's thoughts on this one? I'm expecting, in a lore sub that most people will be wanting to keep the lot, but it's fair to say that 343i's era has been a contentious one.

Who would be considered the most powerful human corporations in the setting?

Additionally, how does Materials Group compare to the likes of Misriah Armory in regards to power within humanities corporate circles and ranking in power and influences? At least publicly.

Why is Master Chief’s fail-safe dubbed “Red Flag”?

What is the significance of the hypothetical operation? Why is it a code for Master Chief’s personal AI fail-safe during Halo Infinite?

Can an ODST helmet have an on-board AI like a spartan helmet?

I was thinking if it would be possible, I know some helmets like Recon and Air Assault are issued to non-Spartans, but i am asking about just base, standard issue, ODST helms.

[SPOILER PARASITES WAKE] Spoiler

An excerpt from the new book, some pretty big lore implications here! The Covenant has been aware of the Flood long before they visited the first Halo.

‘Andolee had heard the old stories about the parasite but never encountered it before, and it utterly terrified him. Old tales gave accounts of containment breaches at holy sites during the Covenant’s early expansion, and what was required to eradicate it by the noble order of zealots—the Temple of Divine Purity’s golden-armored warriors—charged with these cleansing responsibilities. Those tales were enough to haunt the nightmares of the most hardened warrior. Even now he believed that despite what they might do next, and what happened in this battle with the human survivors, all was probably lost. The situation

Hyperion Nuclear Missile Scale

A quick question. Can anyone with access to the Halo 4: Essential Visual Guide confirm the dimensions listed on the Wiki?

15.8m x 17.1m x 61.8m is insane. That would be 1.5 times wider than the Saturn V Rocket which came in at around 10m in diameter including the booster. Additionally it lists it as being oblong while the ingame model is cylindrical.

The ingame scale appears much smaller during it's appearance in Halo 4. In the cutscene at the end of Dawn where Chief kicks the release into place, the release is roughly Chief's armspan which proportionally should be around 2m - 2.2m.

The Missile can be seen in the background and couldn't be more than double the width of the release Chief is moving. Putting it around a 4-6m width, which would still be larger than the largest modern day ICBMs.

Parasite's Wake Narrator

I just got Parasite's Wake on audible and I was super excited to listen to it. Then the narrator started speaking. I really don't want to be mean, but goddamn it is bad.

The quality of the audio is a little rough and the guy draws out the last word of almost every sentence in the worst way. I don't know how to describe the other parts I don't like about his narration, but I doubt I'll be finishing the audiobook. He sounds extremely amateur.

The guy reading Marvin isn't that bad but the first guy really ruins it for me.

They should have brought in Scott Brick to narrate it, he's probably the best narrators they've ever had.

Parasites Wake ending Spoiler

Man, what a bleak ending for Charlie and Seelior Andolee. All that effort on the first halo to get stuck on the Mona Lisa. The worst part is that since he isn't in the short story, it can be assumed Charlie ends up getting infected by the flood anyways.

I knew the outcome wasn't good, given that Master Chief and Sargeant Johnson were the only two humans to make it off of the first Halo, but why couldn't they have just died as the ring broke up, literally anything would've been better than doing my boy Charlie like that.

Ugh. Heartbreaking

How many Banished Dreadnoughts could the UNSC Infinity and it's escort take on in a straight up fight where they aren't ambushed?

The first cutscene of Halo: Infinite would have you believe that the 'Dreadnaughts' of The Banished are really potent battleships that would have won the fight against the Infinity fair and square. Despite the boastful Jiralhanae naming conventions, those vessels are actually just carriers/assault ships with most of their internal volume dedicated to personal carrying capacity at the expense of heavier anti ship weaponry that adorns many similar sized covenant vessels.

Before the events of zeta halo, the 'Dreadnaughts' of the banished actually suffered a few embarrassing tactical defeats at the hands of UNSC, like during the events of Empty Throne, where a single valiant class cruiser and The Shadow of Intent duked it out with a whole flotilla of 8 Dreadnaughts and somehow took out 6 of them before retreating.

With that in mind, how many Banished Dreadnoughts do you think the UNSC Infinity with it's internal frigates could comfortably take on in a fair fight?

How did the battle for earth with Truth’s fleet actually go in between Halo 2 and 3? How significant were his losses?

Did truth just walk over the earth ODP’s and defence force, or take huge losses?

Did said losses make the difference in the battle for the ark later on in H3?
