SAT Scores

I got a 1410 on the SATs- June 2026. Given the correct curve has increased for SATs drastically and I've good-ish extracurriculars (research, few international debate awards) and a good grade 10 transcript (fell in grade 11 for valid reasons and I'll be mentioning them to the college)

Should I be uploading my SAT scores to HKUST or UHK at all?

Appeal for an increased deadline

I got an email asking for my official A level certificates to be submitted since they deemed my provisional results to not be an official way to submit my final grades with the deadline being on November 4th. However, i expect my official certificate to be given out much later.... so do i appeal? and how do I do that? I also cannot use the expected date of document upload feature since i've already uploaded other documents in there.

Should I send an optional SAT 1490 if I'm aiming for a full scholarship?

I'm applying for Computer Engineering and Engineering with Extended Major in AI. My goal is full tuition plus living allowance. Without it, I can't come.

About me

  • Pakistani HSSC 2025 (Maths, Physics, CS): 1144/1200 (95.3%). Board gold medal, 1st in my subject group and 2nd overall out of ~50,000
  • Matric: 97.9%. Quaid-e-Azam Merit Scholarship twice, provincial government merit certificate
  • IELTS 7.5
  • SAT 1490 superscore (Math 790, R&W 700)
  • Robotics programme at my college, finished with distinction (Arduino builds: IR smart bin, conveyor waste sorting, speed tracker)
  • Gap year on the product team of a UK-based startup (ambassador → core product team). My user research shaped the product's positioning, and a model I built fed into a UK university research collaboration
  • Self-taught Java backend dev, a few projects on GitHub

My dilemma: the SAT is optional for my qualification. HKUST's SAT/AP scholarship needs 1530+ and AP 5s, so a 1490 won't unlock that route. But it might still help someone read my unfamiliar board, especially my 790 in Math. Or it might drag me down.

  1. If you came in with a national board, did you send the SAT? Did it matter for your scholarship?
  2. Has anyone here got the Global Learners Scholarship or the Future Leaders Award? What did your profile look like?

Thanks for reading.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club - Educate a foreign journalist

Hi Everyone,

I am a student journalist currently on exchange at HKUST, working on an in-depth article about the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) for a Hungarian news portal.

International coverage of the Jockey Club usually focuses on the sheer scale of the turnover, the charity donations, or Wednesday nights at Happy Valley. However, I want this piece to reflect the real, everyday perspective of Hong Kong locals and long-time residents, that might be easily overlooked.

If you have a moment, I would love to hear your thoughts on any of the following:

  1. Everyday life, and growing up around HKJC: What has been your personal experience with the Club throughout your life in HK?
  2. The government, and charity dynamic: Nothing is purely black or white. How do you view the close relationship between the HKJC, public policy, and the government? What do you see as the genuine benefits versus the downsides of its unique position(s)?
  3. The unwritten side: What are the cultural quirks, unspoken realities, or stories about the HKJC that never make it into corporate reports or international articles, but are essential to understanding how the Club actually interacts with the public?

Feel free to reply directly in the comments below, or send me a direct message if you prefer to share your thoughts privately or off the record.

Thank you very much for your time!!

Is it worth applying at all

I'm a 17-year-old international student based in the UAE, currently on a gap year and planning to apply to HKUST for the 2027 intake, specifically for BSc Mathematics.

I've been quite worried about my chances of admission, mainly because of my B in Computer Science. I'm hoping my Mathematics grades and extracurriculars can make up for it, but I'm unsure how competitive my application actually is.

Academics

Pearson Edexcel International A Levels:

  • Mathematics: A\* (achieved, entirely self-studied)
  • Further Mathematics: A\* (predicted, entirely self-studied)
  • Computer Science: B (achieved, resitting to aim for A/A*)

IGCSEs: 4 A*, 5 A, 2 B

  • A*s in Mathematics, Physics, Business Studies and ICT
  • First Language English: B

Awards & Tests:

  • UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge: Top 1% scorer
  • Major Contribution to Science & Maths Award at graduation
  • Planning to take the SAT in November

Extracurriculars / Supercurriculars

Mathematics & Research

  • Conducted mathematical research into nonlinear models, edge solitons, eigenvalue analysis and numerical stability under academic guidance.
  • Built computational mathematics projects involving differential equations, numerical methods, fractals and mathematical modelling.
  • Helped run an after-school Maths Help Club and privately tutored approximately 10 students from IGCSE to A Level Further Mathematics.
  • Worked on a mathematics and robotics project involving Arduino, programming and mathematical problem-solving.

Entrepreneurship & Technology

  • Founded and developed an educational platform with 200+ users.
  • Built another platform helping students research and compare universities.
  • Founded/co-founded a web development agency, managed 20+ websites, worked with paying clients and generated $10,000+ in revenue.
  • Professional experience in software development and data analysis.

Leadership & Other Activities

  • Helped organise and manage public festivals and events, including planning, logistics, on-site coordination and presentations.
  • Played on my school's basketball team for two years.
  • Reached the finals of a regional interschool football competition twice.

My questions

  1. How competitive is my profile for HKUST BSc Mathematics, especially as an international applicant?
  2. Does my B in Computer Science significantly hurt my chances despite my A* in Mathematics and predicted A* in Further Mathematics?
  3. How much weight does HKUST place on mathematical research, extracurriculars, entrepreneurship and awards?
  4. Would a strong SAT score improve my application, or are my A Levels sufficient?
  5. Would you recommend applying directly to BSc Mathematics or through a broader School of Science admission route?

I'm particularly concerned about whether my grades are competitive enough, since HKUST is one of the universities I'm seriously interested in attending.

I'd really appreciate honest feedback, especially from current HKUST students or international applicants who have gone through the process.

Thanks!

What are the odds for Full Ride..?

I am a Pakistani international applicant with the following stats:

- HSSC (Intermediate in Computer Science): 1144/1200 - 95.33%

- SAT: 1480 single sitting (R&W 690, Math 790, 97th percentile).
- Super score 1490 (R&W 700, Math 790).

- IELTS 7.5 overall with no skill less than 6.5

Awards:

- Gold Medallist in HSSC exams, 1st Position in General Science group, and 2nd overall position in the entire board (top ~0.01% of about 50,000 candidates).
- Have official merit certificate from Board.
- Was also awarded a merit certificate from the Government of Punjab province.
- Distinction Certificate in PGC Robotics Programme 2025.

Extracurriculars:

  1. Product team member at a UK-based remote startup. Started as an ambassador, moved into core product team, now help shape product direction with the CEO.
  2. Self-taught Java backend developer. Built a several projects, available on GitHub, with the latest one being a web app in Jakarta EE (raw JDBC, connection pooling, my own custom request dispatcher, instant session revocation, role-based permissions).
  3. Multiple projects related to multithreading and concurrency.

I have a Gap: finished HSSC in 2025. Since then working with the UK-based company and creating Java Projects.

I want to apply for:

  • HKU: 6987 Computer Engineering, Robotics Engineering, 6999 Computing and Data Science
  • HKUST: Computer Engineering, Engineering with Extended Major in AI

At which uni I have a better chance?
And, should I apply for HKU Belt and Road, an HKU entrance scholarship, or HKUST Global Learners?
Also, my SAT is not that good. Should I add it in my application or not?
Finally, does the gap year after HSSC hurt?

I really appreciate any guidance...

Hi everyone,

I made this little app to help get around Hong Kong and see latest infos from several sources (hk observatory, kmb, citybus, parking spots, beach water quality, air quality etc.) in one place. Especially happy with the ability to add widgets on iOS and therefore never have to open the app.

Do I have a chance for econ&fin (transfer)

Hi! I am a Spanish student seeking admission into Econ&Fin and/or Business Management. I'm a current economics student at university, and I'm planning on transferring to HKU or HKUST or CUHK-Shenzhen. I'm thinking of maybe applying to Econ&Fin at HKUST, but also applying to the Business & Management as my alternative.

My Stats:

- 79% Avg in all modules/classes

EC1002 (Economics) 80% avg

MT105 (Mathematics) 70% avg

ST104A (Statistics) no grade yet

MN1178 (Management) 80% avg

AC1025 (Accounting) 70% avg

PDEV101 no grade yet (project based)

MANI101 no grade yet (project based)

Also these grades are what I have achieved in these first assessments done by my university, so not my final results.

I also have a 7.5 IELTS and an 88% in the LSE Maths Essentials exam (idk if I can use this). I did A-Levels in Mathematics, Business, History, & Spanish with (C, B, A, A*). Yes, unfortunately my A-Levels aren't strong enough for HKUST general A-Levels admission, but if I put Bachelor's instead of A-Levels does that mean that they don't care about my A-Levels, or would my A-Levels impact me a lot? I also have some ECs, but not many. For example, I am a founder of a shopping agent for Taobao, Weidian, & 1688, and I've also been part of my country's national team representing Spain for example in the European Youth Championships in Sailing ILCA 4. I plan on applying for the sports scholarship (BAAS) as well, but not any other.

Do you think I have a chance of admission?

Thanks!!!

Real odds for HKUST conditional offer with a 36 IB Predicted Score?

Hey everyone! I’m preparing my application for HKUST and wanted to get a realistic perspective on my chances of landing a conditional offer.

My Profile:

  • IB Predicted Score: 36 / 45
  • HLs: History, Geography, English B
  • SLs: Math AA, Physics, Russian
  • High School GPA (Grade 11): 4.8 / 5.0
  • Cumulative GPA (Grades 9–11): 4.73 / 5.0
  • Ielts: 7.0

Questions:

  1. Is a 36 PG considered competitive for Humanities/Social Science at HKUST?
  2. Does having Math AA and Physics at SL (rather than HL) limit options for general Business or Economics programs, or is SL Math AA sufficient?
  3. For those who received conditional offers with similar stats, what conditions (final IB score / subject thresholds) were set?

Exchange Student Incoming: How are classes there???

I’m going abroad to HKUST next semester and I wanted to know how the academic life is. I heard classes are hard especially since this university is nicknamed university stress and tension. I’m going as a mechanical engineering student and I just want someone who actually goes there for their experience and some class recommendations that aren’t too hard.
