Complicated question: Back before HoT launched, I had a Necromancer up to the finale of Victory or Death that I never got around to finishing. I took a long break, briefly came back for HoT, and have since only recently fully come back to do stuff. In that time, my aesthetics and general likes have drifted. So, I started a new Necromancer that I bumped to 80 that I like better visually then my original... but hasn't done any of the story.

Should I just push VoD for the Mastery point and kind of leave main story alone to move to other story content (Living World, HoT, SotO; Will get PoF eventually when budget permits), or just nose-to-grindstone the story one last time for all the marbles? I'd like to work on more Mastery tracks, gliding, Skyscale, etc. but it feels weird to leave things... somehow unfinished.

I can always go back and finish the story on my new Necro later, after all, but decision paralysis has me looped.

If you switch off of Victory or Death to do a different chapter and then come back to it does it remain at VoD, or does it send you back to the first level 80 story chapter? If you remain at Victory or Death I'd say skip it and do the other story stuff, but if you'll lose progress just grind out that last chapter.

Also if you haven't I'd recommend doing the prologue and first instance of HoT to unlock leveling Mastery tracks before touching anymore story.

u/HappyHateBot 8h ago

Wouldn't that not matter if I'm not in HoT zones/areas? That's currently an issue I'm running into with SotO (did the introduction to get Weaponmaster Proficiency, which has been very helpful) where at the moment most of my time isn't spent in any areas where I can get XP for those tracks, and I'm capped on Central Tyria until I can get more Mastery Points (been distracted with Halloween instead).

1

u/errorme 8h ago

I wasn't sure if you had even unlocked the ability to level them from your first post. In that case then yeah it's probably worth sucking up and doing Victory or Death. I'll also note that they made Living World Season 2 free for everyone and each chapter there has a Mastery Point for doing them. Once you get the Pact Commander mastery fully unlocked Central Tyria masteries become a much lower priority.

1

u/HappyHateBot 8h ago

Nah, fair - that was honestly one of the first things I did since I got back and I'm maybe 4 Mastery shy of finishing out Pact Commander as it is (doing that now by catching all of the explorable Masteries that don't need an event).

Cheers, mate. I'll probably try and sort that and then retire my old Necro again... Not gonna delete them, 15+ year anniversary gifts are kind of fun. Though I suppose one final send-off before retirement is more in order...

is there a reason why the wiki is still down? Are they restructuring it or something?

1

u/Purplemandown 12h ago

The big PHP vulnerability.  Apparently the wiki was on a rather old version of the software so it wasn't as simple as "plug in the update" to get it fixed.  I expect it's being worked on yet.

1

u/RobDickinson 12h ago

uh the 'oh that looks messy to upgrade we will stick with the old version' problem

1

u/Purplemandown 12h ago

Yeah.  I've been the engineer on the other side of that.  I get it.

Problem becomes when you no longer have a choice :/

Is there elite spec/build that plays similar to Warrior/Berserker? i found the berserker loop (enter berserker rage - burst skill - heal - burst skill...and self heal xd - try to stay in berserker rage for as long as possible) exciting.

is there any other class/build that can be played like that?

2

u/errorme 13h ago

Some Holosmith builds can work like that. Either the trait that gives 150% heat capacity and go in/out of forge mode to stay between 75% and 149% heat, or go with the 'lose heat on dodge' trait and take a sigil that gives endurance when you kill an enemy to keep spamming forge skills.

1

u/palocundo 13h ago

Thanks, only tried mech and scrapper, avoided Holo becouse I heard it can be very complex....but what you described sounds interesting

2

u/errorme 12h ago

Huh, it's not as easy as mech but IMO it's a bit easier than scrapper. There's a little bit of UI juggling at the beginning as you get used to it (you really only want to use Holosmith utility/elite skills while you're >50% heat), but there's less going in/out of kits compared to other Engi specs due to the forge taking up so much of your rotation. You do go in/out of Forge, but you'll be in it way longer than a regular kit.

Mesmer has building up clones/phantasms/blades and then shattering them, and there's a mirage build where you can get your shatters back quicker. Elementalist has some fun and engaging loops as well. Most classes' spear skills involve timing one skill with another properly as well.

If you like the "build up resource, then enter X and stay in it as long as you can" then some necromancer builds with shroud may appeal to you as well. Reaper is the classic at this point.

Basically I'm saying try out a light armor class.

1

u/palocundo 17h ago

i have Reaper unlocked but never really liked it, the shroud is good but all the weapons i tried felt worse than warrior weapon skills, gs feels slow and clunky without quickness, axe, dagger....spear is not all that bad i guess, do not have access to swords.

Wanting to really get back into the game, I think I am looking for a new class to play, my main has been Virtuoso for the longest time but I've always felt playing solo I am a bit squishy so I do struggle. I know Necromancer is the go-to solo class but it's never really been my thing.

What are the fun, tanky, solo friendly classes? Playing on high ping if that makes a difference

There is a good chance I do just try to tweak my build or gear on my Virtuoso because I do really love the class and the overall spec but something different wouldn't hurt

1

u/Caleddin 19h ago

Mirage is my favorite spec to play, if you haven't tried it out. There's a learning curve but you can build one very tanky. What virtuoso have you been playing?

Paragon on warrior has a fun open-world build with multiple aegis/block options you can cycle through. With a dagger main-hand you also have boon-strip which is fantastic for those enemies in the new maps that for some reason always have protection/resistance.

u/Proximaunoriginalis 19h ago

You might take a look at Lord Hizen or MrMystic on YouTube for build ideas, or if you prefer guides, metabattle (specifically for open world only), guildjen, and snowcrows all have pretty good options. Lastly, if you need some low intensity options accessibility wars has you covered.

There are tons of good options. If you want to stay ranged mechanist is a pretty good option, or ranger (untamed and galeshot more specifically) because they have a pet that will tank damage for you. I am personally preferential to condi renegade (can be full ranged but I play hybrid), but that’s partly because it has a low-cooldown 600 cc and alacrity which you can supplement with relic of the pirate queen and have full uptime on most boons while also being a kite-tank if you want it.

Nevertheless, take a look around and I hope you find something that works for you. Virt in open world is great but there are probably more than a few tweaks you could make to be a bit more sustainable. However, other Mesmer classes typically excel in open world relative to Virt, but Virt is a more streamlined experience, typically. (It’s nice that you don’t lose your blades when you’re fighting things that aren’t champ elite and above, for example.)

So... if I learn the spear training via Heroics, then learn the spear training via mastery, I won't get the Heroics back?

1

u/diceEviscerator 23h ago

No.

1

u/PantherCaroso 20h ago

Ahh RIP. Had I known it was immediately given to you the moment you start the expansion, I wouldn't have used the heroics.

1

u/diceEviscerator 20h ago

I think you skip a short segment of the story because of it

1

u/PantherCaroso 19h ago

Ah I see. In my case, I was forced to learn the spear mastery but afterwards I immediately went to the next one with Malice.

u/gangler52 1d ago

Did the bloody prince get retconned out of the game at some point?

I notice it's Palawa Joko doing war with The Mad King Thorn in the labyrinth now.

1

u/Darillian 16h ago

This is also narratively tied up in the "Court Duty" line of achievements, I think there's seven overall. Basically the story assumes you enter the Labyrinth as normal, notice the change, report it to Tassi and she sends you on those small scavenger hunts what unlock lore dialogue options.

1

u/dannyflorida 1d ago edited 1d ago

Btw you can find Bloody Prince Thorn in the Labyrinth. He’s at the end of a secret mini jumping puzzle there, and he has a new moniker. Interact with him and listen to him rant for a hidden achievement.

I won’t spoil it for those who don’t already know. See if you can find him.

3

u/lukey14 1d ago

Nah, he's still mentioned, but he was deeated and they stopped giving festivals a continuing narrative so they brought in Joko as a more timeless adversary to the Mad King (also people love Joko).

Praise Joko!

Wiki down so I'll ask here.

I have everything before Sot0, currently going through LW1, plannee on going through chronologically for the story, unlocking mounts as they come.

But i was thinking about grabbing VoE for the extra spec since I can play them the whole game.

Would it be worth it for that alone? Would it be better to grab one of the other ones instead?

It's just a thought. I'm in no rush, just curious.

1

u/Caleddin 19h ago

If you're sure that you will play all the expansions eventually, no reason not to grab them. Which spec is enticing you enough to want to buy for it?

2

u/errorme 1d ago

This is one of those 'it's up to you' questions cause there's no specific right/wrong answer. You have access to the HoT/PoF/EoD elite specs already but if there's something about the VoE spec for your class that seems more fun or interesting, yeah it's probably worth getting that.

2

u/RobDickinson 1d ago

SOTO has just about the most of any expac, no elite but armor, weaponmaster training, convergence etc

But yeah VoE has 4 decent maps, a new elite that generally rocks and easy hero points on only 2 maps, you can unlock those without big spoilers

Noob Quesiton: Trading post has most items for sale marked as locked. Many of the items in my bag are also marked as locked (I can sell some but not others). When I click on them they say my account needs to be 4 days old. But my character is already 6 days old. Is this a bug? Or does the trading post slowly open up more items over time? If so, it's taking a REALLY long time.

This is my first account, it's free, I'm just trying out the game and deciding later if I want to buy it. PS. Should I just get the S1+S2 bundle or everything? Everything is expensive if I'm buying individual seasons.

1

u/Treize_XIII 1d ago

You need to actual buy the game and then wait exactly 120 hours to use the trading post unrestricted

1

u/killohurtz 1d ago

Just for clarity, it'll be 5 days/120 hours after you apply an expansion to your account. It only shows 4 days because it immediately rounds down to the next whole day, which is kinda misleading.

1

u/RobDickinson 1d ago

Not a bug. To prevent scams new (paid) accounts need to wait 120 hours before they can fully use TP

If you are f2p you wont see those restrictions removed even after the time limit

1

u/RobDickinson 1d ago

Hot/pof is like $5-10 on sale, elder dragon saga is a good buy also, anet/gw2 have regular sales

1

u/PantherCaroso 2d ago

How do I bring other characters to Janthir and Castora? I have already one character who finished the first chapter of the respective expansions and realized there's no Wizard's Tower scroll equivalent.

2

u/VeeVoxRS 2d ago

As u/Darillian said, homestead portals work fine. You can have your homestead in either region.

I personally think all alt Characters of an Account that has completed a map should get "the first" Waypoint unlocked.

0

u/PantherCaroso 2d ago

It's weird Mistlock doesn't have access to the new maps.

1

u/Darillian 2d ago

Apart from the usual solution using Teleport To Stranger Friend, you can use your Homestead portal and then exit though the cave - this puts you in Lowland Shore. I think the Moon Camp also has an exit portal coming from Divinity's Reach, but I am not sure how much that is tied to a story chapter.

Not sure about Castora, I remember reading that new characters not being able to use the Lion's Arch portal was a bug, but I'm unsure whether that's fixed by now.

1

u/PantherCaroso 2d ago

Ah so I have to move forward a bit in the story to access homestead yes? I know about the Moon Camp portal but I don't know if it's accessible to all characters (back then the portal is closed because none of my chars have done the story).

2

u/Darillian 1d ago

Huh, fun little addition: You can check the "Extra Pets Guide" in Lion's Arch, at Postern Ward in the east. It has a merchant icon above its head and sits on a wall near the Guild Registrar (it's a cat :D). For me, it has dialogue options of going to the cat-themed instances, but also to move yourself to Janthir and Castora.

1

u/Darillian 2d ago

Ok, so I checked - the portals I remembered in Divinity's Reach are not unlocked account-wide, unfortunately.

The way forward would then indeed be unlocking the Homestead. It has a small cave with three portals to Lion's Arch, Lowland Shore and the Wizard's Tower.

Maybe late to the party for an answer but let's try. Do you know guys if I could still find people to buy shovels from ? My guildies don't play much anymore and the ones who are still in game don't play Silver Wastes. Thinking about doing it all by myself is overwhelming. As you probably know, the guild hall needs a lot of shovels.

Do you think I can just sit somewhere and ask for shovels or there's no chances to find any nowadays ?

1

u/Darillian 1d ago

I also remember selling shovels to some guy via LFG a couple of months ago. If I remember correctly, it was like 20 silver per shovel and you just invite whoever wants to sell the shovels to the guild, let them donate it and send the money before or after (the order genuinely does not matter because of the low price - who would go to the trouble just to scam a couple gold?)

1

u/MornJack 1d ago

250*20 at least. Cheap but not low. I'll have a try anyway.

1

u/killohurtz 2d ago

Shovels are regularly sold on the Overflow Trading Company discord. I'd start there

1

u/MornJack 2d ago

Thanks for the idea.

Some questions about chuka and champawat

Do you lose access to being able to carry the cubs on your back by finishing the 4th collection/legendary

And can other players see the cubs on your back?

2

u/penguin279 3d ago

No, you don't lose access, and yes, everyone else can see them

2

u/Ennewt 3d ago

What are you actually supposed to do as an enchanted armor in octovine? I always just run around spamming my cc on bombs and pods and putting down heals and generally feeling like I have no idea if I'm helping. I do just fine as a normal player but sometimes I want to be more helpful and idk what's expected of me lol.

7

u/killohurtz 3d ago

As an armor your job is to keep the triggerblossoms away from your allies and out of the main path using your knockback (1) and pull (3) skills. Those same skills plus (4) can destroy the breakbars of the invulnerable mordrem enemies and take pressure off everyone for a few seconds. I think (2) can reduce the outgoing damage of the mordrem frogs. Lastly (5) is best saved for when several people are downed (or dead! It can revive from defeat) since the cooldown is so long.

1

u/Ennewt 3d ago

I see I see thank you, that makes it make a lot more sense to me. Had no idea they could up dead players, I will definitely heal more intelligently next time lol.

2

u/ragmats 3d ago

Is there another source of event timers while the wiki is down?

3

u/SirSuperCaide 3d ago

If you're open to addons, you can get customizable in-game timers using BlishHUD. That's what I use.

4

u/InfluenceConnect6677 3d ago

Flax seeds always sell higher than the oil itself, cheaper too

1

u/Reaverz 2d ago

I wonder why that is.

2

u/Caleddin 1d ago

It's because everyone is desperate to get rid of their milling stones.

2

u/Reaverz 1d ago

And I've been vendoring them all this time...

2

u/PantherCaroso 3d ago

How do you check if crafting something sells more vs. raw materials? I'm wondering if Linseed Oil is more profitable than Flax Seeds.

1

u/ragmats 3d ago

On the wiki, you can look at the cost of the base materials. But the wiki isn't working right now. Once it is, you can check it.

3

u/SirSuperCaide 3d ago

You can compare the prices directly by just looking them up on the trading post, it's easy enough to calculate for basic refinements. Some external tools like gw2efficiency can help you with more complex items.

2

u/PantherCaroso 3d ago

Ahh all right, thanks.
