Why is it okay for people to be condescending to me, but if I call them out I am an asshole?

I’m an established adult. I hate when people talk to me like a pre school child and try and give me common sense advice. If it goes on for too long I might say something like “I’m not stupid.” In which case the person patronizing me gets defensive saying they were trying to help.

It's have, not of

May have, could have, would have, should have. Not may of, could of, would of or should of. Will have, not will of. Dammit people. I teach English as a foreign language, for the love of God stop it.

From GoFundMe to bragging about toys

So a local couple in my sons neighborhood had a fire that severely damaged their home a little over a year ago. Family of 5 with kids aged 14, 11 & 9. They moved into a rental while their house was rebuilt. They posted their hardship & struggles all over facebook for weeks. Someone in their family started a gofundme for them. They received over 200k in donations. It was also acknowledged inntjeir posts hiw greatful they were that they were nearly fully covered by insurance less some deductible cost & each of their employers gave them financial assistance.

They are now posting pictures of their new car & that they paid cash fir it, posting videos of the kids playing the golf simulator they put in their garage, and talking about the cruise they are planning in February.

The husband knew I was a contributor & came & asked me if his wife shouldnt post all of this & if they should be ashamed of what they have now. I said its their money & they can do what they want with it. I dont care what they bought at all, but they could be a little more discreet as there are people who donated to them that arent so fortunate and DO CARE, right, wrong or indifferent.

I told him the early posts about how everything was such a struggle made people feel a certain way & want to help, & now the seemingly bragging posts make people angry they helped you get a new car & a golf simulator when they were only trying to help you get back on your feet.

I thought he understood but then went on a rant himself on facebook about how its none of anyone's business whay they do with their money, no one can judge them for their good fortune, and he doesn't feel bad about giving his family some nice things after they went through a nearly year long traumatic experience.

How would you feel if you donated $50 or $100 or even more to them?

People who stand way too close to you

I know in some cultures it’s not seen as bad so they do it in America but it freaks me out when you’re close enough to kiss my neck. I turn around and you’re five inches away. It frustrates me but I try to be understanding, I really do but I don’t even have elbow room. The first time I thought they were trying to pickpocket me. Nope! Just really comfortable in some else’s space.

Neighbours with plants that grow over the fence and become your problem

The shared fence between my neighbour and myself in the UK is a lattice fence. She has a creeping vine planted along it, and as a consequence, it grows through the fence and over the top, I have to cut it back if I want to access the walkway.

My housemate/landlord doesn't do it because he's ADHD as fuck, and 'out of sight, out of mind'. To be honest I don't even think he notices it when he's walking right past it. He just works around it.

We've gotten letters from the postman that have 'please clear your pathway' scrawled on them when I'm away because it doesn't get cut back.

It ends up taking me several hours to do, my back seized up last time, and then the garbage bags take up the front yard because it's London, we can't get to the tip and given the HCOL at the moment, we can't spare the money to have someone come and take it away.

I hate the damn plant and that it's my problem even though neither of the people who live there wanted it.

Does anybody else miss the days when every single player and fan in every single sport didn't scream "let's gooooo!" whenever anything happens in a game? It's douchier than saying "fire" and "lit".

OOP cannot fathom starting job at 7am due to strict 2-hour morning routine, including 40-minute shower. Thinks braids or cornrows are the only solution.

It grinds my gears when people pretend to have issues they don’t

And I’m not talking about people who are just privileged who do genuinely face issues every normal person does then complaining. I’m talking about stuff that feels like someone shouting from a mansion balcony that apartment renting prices are too high. It’s a bit generalised and hard to explain but that’s the best I can do. Because, like, it’s fine that you don’t suffer from that but don’t speak over the people that do and try to farm validation from them. They portray themselves as these little helpless underlings (while also portraying themselves as morally above everyone else who doesn’t agree with them on literally every opinion they have) and it’s even worse if they have a following because if you try to call them out for basically speaking over others who actually do face whatever issue they’re larping, you’re made out to be the asshole by their fans. And yes, I see it most on social media because of course that’s where these things like to gather. I used to think it was mostly confined to twitter users but unfortunately it seems they’ve been bleeding out and infecting the rest of social media.

People who go out of their way to tell you how they don't follow news/politics/sports

If you don't follow something, that's fine. I'm talking about people who belittle it, kind of look down ro try to make you feel small about it

Hey can you believe (X event) happened?

Yeah I don't follow the news, I'm too busy with my own life/I have a job/life/kids.

Usually doled out with a smug tone or laughing or rolling eyes emoji. I know one person who gives me the *yawn* 🥱

Did you see Sunday's game?

Yeah, I don't follow sports, who cares about other people playing a game.

Why don't you just play the sport instead of watching it?

“ARE YOU OKAY?”

This is such a passive aggressive statement that seems to be gaining in popularity over recent years. I’ve even heard people I know irl suggest it as a “healthy” way to respond instead of clearly setting boundaries or limits. It feels like poor communication, when there are more productive and less passive aggressive ways to address things.

Excuse me?

You know the type, talks loud sometimes, needs things repeated. That's me, and Jerry Seinfeld too.

Why do I always have to say “excuse me” when I can't hear what someone is saying? Why? Am I guilty? Did I inconvenience you? “Excuse me? Pardon me? I'm sorry?” Why can't I just say, “Nope. Not loud enough.”

So, as a fan, I gave it a try, just a blunt, “Nope, not loud enough.” It's surprisingly usable in a public-facing service role.

Here's another one. “Hey, use your outside voice.”

In regular conversation, the first one doesn't come across as rude as you might think. The second is bound to draw an eye roll, but it gets the job done. The catch is, they may start talking to you in a loud, slow, mocking tone from that point on. Apparently, if you can't hear them, the next step is to find out if you can understand them.

Why do you pee on the seat?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Ok people, specifically the ones who stand when they pee, why do you insist on peeing all over the seat? You know people sit there and yet it probably happens every single time. Can you not just grab a little piece of toilet paper to avoid touching it or just use your foot to have the slightest bit of common decency? Don’t even get me started on the giant puddle directly below the urinal.

Why do a lot of people in English-speaking countries still misspell words quite often?

I noticed that despite English being your first (and sometimes only) language, many of you still misspell a lot of words. This has always been confusing for me as a Filipino who is very particular with my skills in four different languages (thanks to colonization and our neoliberal education lol).

And it's not just misspellings but also mispronunciations. I've been seeing those IG reels and TikToks where random people on the street get asked to read simple sentences and they seemingly struggle to do so??? That's so strange especially when "native" English speakers are the first to make fun of foreign accents!
