Hindsight is 2020 is now Play Me My Song - The Music of Genesis

Three years ago on this very day, I announced to this community my intention to rank every Genesis song in the entire catalog, one per weekday, alongside "my thoughts about the songs" over the course of 2020. I called the project (quite cleverly, if I do say so myself) Hindsight is 2020. What nobody could have predicted at the time was the way the project grew: to the point that "my thoughts" began looking like full fledged essays, that my research into the songs would become increasingly extensive, and that the community would (after an admittedly rocky start) respond so positively to the exercise.

More than once over the span of the live project, it was suggested to me that I ought to turn the whole shebang into a proper book. After some hemming and hawing, I buckled down and spent not only all of 2021 but also the first half of 2022 making that happen. And so it's with a bit of well-earned excitement and pride that I can announce to you here, three years after the debut of Hindsight is 2020, my book: Play Me My Song - The Music of Genesis. Play Me My Song is set to be published on March 17, 2023 through Wymer Publishing; pre-orders are available now.

If you've read the Hindsight project this may not come as much of a surprise, but Play Me My Song will be (at the time of publication) the largest book ever published on Genesis. It features not only expanded and/or rewritten essays for every single song Genesis ever officially released, but also essays for every studio album (covered originally in my "H'20" companion series) and select solo efforts (covered originally as my "Peripheral Visions" companion series). It's the entire Hindsight collection in one printed package, except more of it.

I want to thank all of you for making this possible. If not for your tremendous engagement with and enthusiasm for the work I did, I'm not sure I would've taken this next step. This book is as much yours as it is mine (though I'd prefer to keep the royalties, you understand).

And hey, if you haven't checked out the original Hindsight is 2020 series, why not give it a shot? I think and hope you'll come away pretty satisfied.

You can read through the entire Hindsight project here.

You can pre-order Play Me My Song - The Music of Genesis here.

See you all in March!

How Many Times Was the Classic Five Piece Together After 1975?

Other than the 6 of the best reunion, the photo shoot for the boxed set in 1999, the failed reunion meeting in a hotel in the early 2000s, and the Sum of the Part Documentary/Interview do we know of any other time that all the members of the classic five piece Genesis were all in the same room together at the same time.. Or any pictures of Gabriel or Hackett with any members of Genesis in the 80s onwards? I've seen some picture online of Phil in Peters dressing room before a Peter solo show in the 80s but I can't seem to find it online anymore.

Was Take Me Home supposed to be a "message song" like Another Day in Paradise was later on?

I'm not sure what percentage of Genesis/Phil Collins fans are American like me, and among those what percentage are NFL fans, but this season ABC/ESPN have decided to play the chorus of Take Me Home during towards the end of the games before commercial breaks during Monday Night Football, usually at the end of the 3rd quarter. I think this is kind of a funny choice, since while the song does indeed have the big anthemic chorus that is perfect for a broadcast like Monday Night Football, the verses have very dark lyrics, some of the darkest Phil ever wrote.

I have to assume a lot of the misconceptions surrounding this song come from its music video, with Phil going to all these places around the world and at the end arriving at its home. This is very dissonant from the song's lyrics and how Phil has described the song, with it being inspired by One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and basically being about someone being committed to a psychiatric hospital, suffering all these indignities like forced sedation ("they can turn off my feelings, like they're turning off the light"), and of course wanting to go home. This song is just as serious as Another Day in Paradise, yet I think because of the music video it didn't come across like that to most listeners.

Was this song ultimately supposed to be a "message song" like Man on the Corner was earlier on and Another Day in Paradise was later? If this was the case, why didn't Phil have the music video be more like what Another Day in Paradise's would be a few years later, perhaps with statistics of how many people are involuntarily committed to mental hospitals and pictures of news headlines about the abuse stories that came out from them. Was there some fear it would hurt sales that there wasn't later on for Another Day in Paradise?

Gateway drug: Abacab – thanks, sister!

In the beginning … there was a cassette, recorded by my sister, it must’ve been the year 1991. I was 14 yo, and I really loved Phil Collins’ music. My elder sister asked me whether I knew Genesis, I didn’t. So she recorded a 90-min cassette for me: A side Abacab (Put another record didn’t fit fully on it unfortunately), B side Invisible Touch.

It blew me away, I listened like 1000 times to it. Not knowing the real good œuvre from the 70s. But let me tell you later more about this.

I was hooked, and she recorded “Shapes” and Face Value. Now I had two tapes to listen to all day all night. I wanted more, but she only had Led Zeppelin and so on. So I took my pocket money and went to the local supermarket where they also sold CDs. I chose the cheapest one, a bootleg live recording (Genesis live USA), I think it was from the ATTWT tour. The sound was horrible, but l liked In the Cage and In that Quiet Earth very much.

Some weeks later I bought Wind and Wuthering because of the cover, the low price, and the fact that I already knew some of the songs.

Still, I didn’t know what else I had to explore! Some months later I went to youth leisure activities, we went to a big city, where I went to a record store, having some extra money in my pockets. I took some records in my hands, and again decided by the artwork: Selling England! Not knowing what a gem I had in my hands! And I wasn’t able to listen to it, because we stayed some more days at a youth hostel. But again and again I read the lyrics and wondered how it would sound like. Back home, I directly went to the record player and put it on. The beginning alone blew me away, “Can you tell me where my country lies”. Wow. But then. First. Of. Fifth. Holy shit! One of the reasons I again took piano lessons (that I actually had given up because I thought it was uncool).

About 35 years later, I’m still addicted and listening to the same old music, which is still fascinating and NEVER gets boring.

Again: thank you, sister!

Know its a marmite song, but compared to what was shown on come rain or shine,

I don't think in too deep sounds too bad played in a lower key.

on the other hand whatever setting Tony was using on jesus he knows me, sounds a bit jarring.

Musical Box Keswick Theatre prerecorded drum track?

Not sure if anyone else was there last night at the Keswick, but during “Deep in the Motherload”, at the breakdown part (bridge?) where it slows down and the lyrics are something like “mothers milk still wet on your face” there was some major audio issues that really sounded terrible. It sounded like there was a prerecorded drum track and it was 100% out of sync with the band. It sounded so bad I couldn’t believe they kept going.

No acknowledgement after the song was over about technical difficulties or anything at all. My wife and I couldn’t believe how awful it sounded. We have no issues with musicians messing up but this is something entirely different.

It got me thinking, what else is pre recorded during the musical box set. Is this a faithful recreation or are they not actually playing everything I’m
hearing? It really made me over analyze and just hyperfocus on the playing to see if they were actually playing what I was hearing. Kind of took me out of the vibe. Anyway wanted to know if anyone else heard this, and if there’s any insight anyone may have to what they do with prerecorded tracks. Also, if there’s a way to relisten to the show I’d be interested in giving it another run.

To be clear, this was not a bad sample sound or a sound effect. This was what sounded like a bass drum track totally keeping a different time than the rest of the band. The actual drummer was spot on with the song. So I just want to know what the hell happened.

My wife and I really enjoy the band and love hearing Genesis music faithfully recreated, if there are prerecorded portions to the show, that is very disappointing to hear.

Anyway they sounded great otherwise. Long live the music of Genesis.

Genesis Wall Art

Has anyone seen any really cool Genesis artwork? I just bought a house and I want a feature wall with a giant painting of Genesis, incorporating a few band images, all the albums in some way, I was thinking big pop-art but then I didn't like the way it looked. If anyone has seen something cool, I'd appreciate sharing here.

am i the only one?

tl;dr: I like the Nick Davis remixes the most, does anybody else here?

Context: I got into Genesis through selling England by the pound way back in 2010, 2011. Back then I would just listen to the album on YouTube, I’d also listen to foxtrot and the lamb, but I had a much more narrow mind back in these days and I wasn’t really interested in anything beyond that…

anyway, back in 2019, I was trying to quit smoking w33d and I needed something to listen to that would keep my mind at ease. I’m not sure how or why but I just started listening to selling England again. And it clicked, and then I got back into foxtrot, and then the lamb, and then trick of the tail and wind and wuthering, and eventually Duke became one of my favorite albums ever… Slowly, but surely I allowed myself to just love all of their music, even their mid 80s stuff.

without even realizing it, this whole time, I was listening to the Nick Davis remixes. I grew to love how they sound the clarity, the brightness, the dynamic range, Phil‘s drums, Peter‘s voice, Tony’s many many organ and keyboard and synthesizer tones… And of course, those crystal clear sparkling 12 string guitars. At this point, I just can’t imagine not listening to the Nik Davis remixes.

ever since I discovered this Reddit and this community, as much as I love and share the passion for their music, it kind of surprises me how much people do not like the 2007 remasters.

So, am I the only one? I’m also curious to go exactly why people don’t like the Nick Davis versions though anytime I’ve seen someone go into detail, usually it’s because they just flat out prefer the 94 remixes or the original ones. I have to admit I don’t think I’ve heard much of the 94 remixes and any of the compact discs I own (which i like to collect indiscriminately from the odd record store visit) seem to be from the 1980s.

Let me know what you guys think!

Lamb in the grocery store.

I was shopping at the local Hy-Vee today and they played The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway over the in-store music system. It might be the first time I've ever heard The Lamb played in a public setting... Including radio. (It was the first song, not the entire album.. of course)

I was in Stockholm over the weekend (lovely city and really lovely people).

During our time we went in to the ABBA museum. You're probably aware of this already, but it was a nice surprise to see the mixing desk ABBA used for some of their songs was also used for Duke.

And the museum has it on display.
