Post image

Is it just me or did you guys find Emma to be equally (or even more) charismatic than Marie?

Well yeah that's her character. She's the comedic relief, and she's also arguably the best actress of the group.

This. I mean, I'm late to the party (currently watching season 1) but she has handled emotional scenes well, she's good at comedy. All in all, she's a natural.

Shes my wifes favorite. I think Cipher, Sam, Emma, and the Jordans are great. I just really have always disliked Maries character. I think some scenes she does super well and some shes just such a trope. Like for instance everyone says "I think its a trap" and she just goes "Yeah but we have to try!" Then...they get trapped and she cant decide who to follow...shes just an aggravting character to watch imo.

A great comedic actor is a great drama actor but a great drama actor may not be a great comedic actor.

I’ll die on this hill

Edit: wait… are people being negative about Marie? Part of why Emma was so funny in season 1 was the volleying done by Marie. They’re both brilliant?

She's the best actress by far out of the group.

I came into the show thinking "oh ffs, here's another whiny quirky millenial" and was captivated by her energy and authenticity.

Linklater's Hamish is another example of a character that shouldn't really work, but the actor's doing a phenomenal job.

I don’t find Marie charismatic at all, Emma has it in spades though; she’s definitely the comic relief, I just hope she survives…

I don't find Marie charismatic at all

Probably because she accidentally got where she got? She gets admission.. Then she gets viral.. Then she makes top 5.. She's kinda conflicted, I guess. She wants to rise up the ranks but she also doesn't want to lose her emotional side.

me too and you know what? i think that's part of Marie's character.

because if you watch the interviews Jaz is THE most charismatic in the cast.

if Marie is written as not chariscmatic on purpose, then Jaz is a great actress.

If Emma dies, we riot

Imo, Emma is extroverted version of Marie

u/cortex04 Oct 14 '25

And slightly less conflicted too.

emma is my favorite, shes such a queen.

Right? IMO, she's one of the few characters on the show that are generally nice to others until offended or ridiculed.

Their two entirely different written characters for unique reasons, trying to compare them is moot for the purpose of the show as they occupy different lanes.

This is like comparing Scott and Stiles on teen wolf

Wow thats an amazing comparison I always felt bad for Tyler posey because Dylan o brien became the star

I hate the Marie and Emma comparisons. They are two different people with two different personality types and two different back stories. Of course Emma is gonna be more charismatic than Marie. She’s had the ability to have more freedom a chance to explore different things. It’s literally getting introduced to social media when we meet her from the time she’s 12 till the time she goes to God U she is in an orphanage that she doesn’t get to leave the school is in the same building. She’s literally spent her whole adolescent years, thinking that she’s a monster, while being locked up in a prison. So obviously Emma’s gonna be more carefree. Although Emma’s mom sucks she has her to fall back on if anything goes wrong. Marie does not.

Wait are people dumping on Marie? That’s wild. Marie and her actor are brilliant. Her scenes with her sister are heart-wrenching!

Well, that's the way the character has been written....more interesting than Marie. This is fiction, there's no faith "this is the only way possible" more than the writers create for the characters.

Emma is a better character played by a more talented and charismatic actress. IMHO, of course

I swear Emma has insane chemistry with everyone. Every scene she has with Cate, Bushmaster, or the coffee shop girl I could swear they would end up together

9

u/RestOTG Oct 13 '25

Who is putting Marie even close to as charismatic as Emma lmao.

Maries personality is trying for most people around her. She has good intentions but the social skills of an angry possum.

Maybe because Emma grew up in a household with parents and was already an internet sensation before even arriving at Godolkin while Marie grew up in an orphanage after accidentally murdering her parents and being outcasted by everyone who was supposed to love her.

Not to mention the constant fear of being sent away to the adult facility and barely having access to the Internet or regular social interaction. It would not exactly fit the character profile for her to be bubbly and cheerful.

She's not as charasmatic because shes literally a dark traumatized and tortured character

6

u/WhenTheStarsLine Oct 14 '25

I love them both so much

6

u/WonderfulPipe Oct 14 '25

Yes, I feel like Marie is the main “super super” protagonist, but Emma is like a more down to earth character for us to identify

6

u/Behemothwasagoodshot Oct 14 '25

Emma has more charisma but Marie is one of my favorite protagonists of all time.

2

u/eddie_vercetti Oct 13 '25

I wonder if the writers liked her, Jordan, Cate and Andre more.

2

u/cortex04 Oct 13 '25

Uh.. Possibly? 🤷‍♂️ I'm not saying Marie wasn't good; Jaz did a great job but I felt like Lizze did a better job with what she was given to do. Also, the actors playing Jordan & Andre were believable; very well cast.

6

u/eddie_vercetti Oct 13 '25

It's very tricky to be the lead when you have a stacked cast around you.

I will say S2 fixes the issue in a way but it's now the opposite problem.

4

u/igivegoodparent88 Oct 14 '25

The funny thing is in interviews jaz id the most charismatic 😅 I guess you either have to blame the writers or her character for being so sheltered and people not understanding her or not trying to

3

u/Own-Quote-1708 Oct 15 '25

Shes supppsed to be likeable shes the comic relief

3

u/Alternative_Device71 Oct 13 '25

Emma is just more interesting than Marie

Making marie a chosen one on par with homelander in s2 when her struggle was being a unmarketable bloodbender that vought didnt really want is a bit of an asspull tbh

0

u/RelevantButNotBasic Oct 14 '25

Marie as a whole is a bit of an asspull tbh. Her writing is super bland. The actress is fine but the writing is so fucked. The rest of the group is great though....for the most part.

-3

u/Alternative_Device71 Oct 13 '25

I thought I was going nuts, definitely a huge retcon on her character status with this storyline

2

u/amarodelaficioanado Oct 14 '25

Emma (Lizze Broadway) is the most charismatic and better played character of the show. Marie actress is good, but Broadway steals the show, IMHO

1

u/LonelyNip Oct 14 '25

I find Marie boring as fuck.

0

u/LauraKay9 Oct 14 '25

Emma is a YouTuber. Marie is a depressed orphan who accidentally killed her parents and is looking for her sister who hates her. These are 2 different characters, with different views of things and different PERSONALITIES...

(remember when she recorded that comeback tiktok to come back to the university... or do u just want Emma to be every character on the show?)

Sam is ALSO not as "charismatic" as Emma, but I don't see you comparing him with Marie...
