Discussion People from a county that is specifically a hurling or football stronghold. What is the feeling towards the other game?

• Upvotes

I'm from Louth. We have over 140,000 people and 3 hurling teams. I grew up playing both sports which is rare here so I wanted to know what it's like in other places!

As far as the feeling in the county around hurling, there isn't one of disdain or hatred towards it, there just isn't a feeling about it at all. People don't talk about, it's not in the schools, I went to the championship final and there would be bigger crowds at any of the football championship group games. The game probably wouldn't exist in the county if it wasn't for guards/teachers etc. moving up from hurling counties and getting involved in setting up the original clubs and now being part of the player base. It's a shame really but I don't see it growing much anytime soon, is this the case for football in the hurling strongholds? What's the feeling like towards the other sport in your county? Or if you're a proper dual county, how do the two sports coexist?

It's a little touch but I definitely think it's an undeniable handpass. Ceadach is from Derry.

Hurling Hurling Rules

The new trial rules have come into play.

Extending the range of the 65 I'm not convinced on. After watching the shinty I had a thought seeing the scots lads take all their frees from the ground.

In most sports when the ball goes out over the end line, something is awarded where they retain possession and have a chance of scoring, in the modern game 65s are almost a given.

So rather than extending the range and seeing how capable players are at sideline cuts, what if a 65 had to be taken from a ground strike? Or it's moved closer such as the 45 and taken from with a ground strike.

Most likely the majority of times the sliotar goes in around the house, a fight for possession etc. in on the 45 still gives the chance of scoring but from the ground, makes it that bit more difficult.

Don't get me wrong, rising and striking from 70 odd yards is a great skill in itself, just opening the extended 65 rule to other ideas/suggestions

Some “interesting“ looking camán’s here. I‘d estimate around 60% of the ads were the usual generic AI template. I must check my league/Munster/All Ireland programs from following the county this year but I don’t recall noticing AI in those match programs.

Discussion Unpopular opinions?

If anyone is familiar with the series on the FNG youtube channel where they read out outrageous and not entirely serious unpopular opinions about soccer, does anyone have unpopular opinions about the GAA? Whether it be retrospectively questioning how good or bad certain teams were or some good ol revisionist overrating current teams, I want to hear it!

I'll start: Donal Óg Cusack has had it out for Joe Canning ever since he put 2-12 past him and they would have beaten Galway if he paid his TV license

GAA in the UK

What's it like over there if you play for a club? I know London is well served with Ruislip but say in other parts? Is there facilities? Is there clubs in Scotland and Wales? I played myself a few years ago against a Birmingham club if I recall, amazed me how isolated the pitch was but they had a good following. Is training taken seriously?

Discussion Most Competitive Club Championship

With Edendork’s remarkable replay victory over kingpins Errigal Ciaran in the much lauded Tyrone SFC, they became the 8th different club to win the Tyrone crown in the past ten years. A team has not retained the trophy since Carrickmore in 2005.

Is there a senior county championship that can match or better this stat? The closest in Ulster is the Cavan SFC with 6 different winners in the past decade.

Armagh (5)
Derry (5)
Antrim (5)
Fermanagh (4)
Donegal (4)
Down (3)
Monaghan (3)

Discussion Legends Q and A tour

I’m considering a business idea.

Would their be much a scope for a legends Q and A event for different football and hurling events.

Be a great opportunity to meet like minded people and asses options.

Could be like a night with Henry Shefflin or in conversation with Colm cooper.

Discussion Waterford Club Championships

Curious as to why the Waterford football final generally tends to finish up either at the end of October or the start of November most years - even allowing for dual players, and so it not beginning until the hurling is finished, the Déise have tended to be one of the first counties out of both codes for the last decade, so you'd have thought the County Board would have a head start over everyone else in scheduling fixtures?
