Using a Daiwa Ninja 2-10g spinning rod for Chatterbaits / Bladed Jigs in winter?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I recently got my first rod, a Daiwa Ninja spinning rod rated for 2-10g, and I've been mostly using it for finesse soft plastics (Texas rig, small jigheads).

However, since bass are a bit slower right now, I was wondering if I could also use it for small reaction baits like mini chatterbaits or light crankbaits, with very slow retrieves and pauses.

I know 2-10g is pretty light, but would throwing a small ~4g chatterbait/crankbait occasionally ruin or break the rod over time, or is it okay if I don't use it all day? What are your thoughts? Thanks.

What three rods and reels do I need for most fishing techniques?

I’ll start off with what I have

I have a 7” Medium diawa Airdx with a shimano Nexave (mainly for my more finesse fishing I’d like to do.

I have a 7” MH Berkeley for more my live bait just trying to fish for anything.

That is what I have right now but I want to get into cranks swimbaits, chatter bait, Buzz baits and all them heavier side lures. But I’d like it also to be able to run them Texas rig stick and more.

Hopefully that’s enough infortmation I’m also on about a $200 budget

My previous post I discovered one of my reels was under spooled so I added a mono backing to this one, I have some braid left over should I add more or cut the line

The lews is a size 1000, and the other is a size 2500. Got both reels of Depop and both came with the braid pre spooled and was wondering if any are under spooked and if they are how can I fix it, do I attach another braided line??

Advice to catch something other than catfish in SE Louisiana (shore)

I’ve got a catfish problem where 95% of fish I catch are catfish. I am learning to fish in hopes of eating my catch but I hate the taste of catfish and also recently got barbed which sucked. I am using dead shrimp and a weight I set up with spinner and then while that rod is leaning against something I’m walking around with baitcaster and paddle tail or golden spoon. I have been doing this for months and occasionally catch catfish and have never caught anything with baitcaster lol. I live in New Orleans area which is famous for speckled trout and redfish but I only catch catfish. I am exclusively shore fishing for now. I have heard the dead shrimp and weight brings in the cats but it’s a lot easier to buy dead shrimp from grocery store than try to source live shrimp or something else when I’m trying to get a few hours in after work. Thanks

If you catch these, are bigger bass around?

Basically the title. Caught some dinks on a rooster tail but wasn’t sure what to change to try land larger fish. I started fishing earlier this year and my current goal is to not use live bait, just catch em on lures.

I’m grateful for anything biting but was just wondering if these are biting (and I could see larger bass in the water) what’s the correct course of action to land bigger fish?

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask me! I’ve learned a lot, and still have a lot to go but I’ve been laying it down these last few months. Last pic is my pr at 3.8. I’m only using senkos and flukes. Sometimes I’ll get fancy and use shiners ( live bait ). I don’t know wtf I’m doing wrong but chatters, jigs, glides, whoppers, spinners, they simply just don’t work for me. A year into heavily bass fishing and I haven’t had a top water bite yet🥲. Is it because I don’t fish in the morning ? I’m a night fisher I enjoy going from 6/8pm

My first season fishing with not much catching

I picked up a rod because my daughter wanted to go fishing on our summer family vacation in the finger lakes. We got to the place we rented that evening, she had a rod she borrowed, we went out on the dock and within 20 minutes she caught a small fish. I caught one about 30 minutes after that. We fished on and off all week but no catching.

Over the summer I bought more stuff, different lures, plastic baits, hooks, bobbers, weights, etc.
fished several times a week though early October in various lakes and rivers in Northern NY. No more hooks but a few nibbles. Now the days are getting colder and shorter and I think I am done for the season. If I go out again it will be on a warmish sunny day. In two months the rivers and lakes will be frozen over.

I have learned a lot about tackle and how to put together various rigs but what I haven't learned is how to catch, what it really feels like and how to set a hook. How to fish where the fish are and when they are biting.

I was considering buying a fishing boat but now I'm thinking just outfit my little kayak with a fish finder and see what happens next spring. I need more experience and some positive results to get better at this. What should be my next steps?

Rigging zman

So I know you're not supposed to store zman with other plastics. That's fine. However as I find myself using more zman lures, I'm finding it annoying to have to constantly adjust their squishy lures on normal non zman hooks and jigheads.

Is there anything I can do to make them stay better without buying zman specific tackle? I don't want to pack two sets of tackle depending on what I'm planning to fish with, if I don't have to.

I have heard you can super glue it, but then what happens when you want to change out lures?

Is this too much vegetation?

Post image
2 Upvotes

This is typical of what I’m getting in the lake where I fish except for all that extends much of the time so that in (for example) a depth of 10 feet, 9 or more of it is vegetation. Even in the murky dark water (Lake Griffin in central FL) I can clearly see it inches below the surface. Is this too much vegetation to fish in? The finder is not giving me much to go on aside from “this lake is choked with weeds”. I’ve not yet seen anything I can discern as a fish. I have pulled fish from it. Several largemouth and a bowfin. FWIW I have not explored the full lake. I’m using my FIL pontoon to fish from.

I know it’s not as big as what others catch but for me, cracking 2LBs was awesome! Fall fishing is being nice to me so far. This is after getting the skunk off last week. Let’s go!

Forgetting to Measure

Once a fish hooks on, I forget everything else. I get excited, land it, take my photo then release to keep out of water time to a minimum. After they swim off, I realize I forgot to measure for my logs.

Anyone else do this? I have a Rapala folding measuring stick which is kind of a pain bank fishing, but maybe I should use a measuring tape instead.

Seriously, that is the first time a knot turns out looking decent on the first try. I'm absolutely thrilled with it.

Now it's time to go out and, as always, catch no fish

Best trolling rod for striper?

Hello, I need some advice on what rods to use to troll for freshwater stripers from a kayak. I was looking at the uglystik striper casting rod 7ft. On the other hand the 7ft okuma diamond elite trolling rods in mh and ml but which one would work best. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Difference targeting Rainbow trout VS Brown Trout

Hey all I’m from New Zealand. I live in the lower North Island and have started targeting brown trout, I’m planning a trip away where they have rainbow trout predominantly. For brown trout I’m mainly using soft baits in natural colours, rapalas in a brown trout pattern, Toby’s and spoons. All my lures are fairly natural colours which seem to be working quite well, I can’t find too much online if there’s a difference between targeting rainbows compared to brown trout, can anyone help advise if they are much different?

Travelling with fishing gear tips?

I”ll be travelling interstate in Aus in about 2 months. And wanted to take my fishing rod & reel and some basic tackle with me.

I know I can definitely take fishing gear as part of my checkin baggage, that’s no issue.

But I wanted to know has anyone else travelled with fishing gear before? What did you do to safely pack it to ensure it arrived safely without any bumps and bruises.

Is there anything I should be aware of? Any tips & tricks welcome.

Found it at an antique mall. Looks like it originally was part of a reel/rod combo, but I saw abu Garcia and picked it up. Appears and feels almost brand new!

I'm tired and I can't tell what im doing wrong.

So far, this whole year, I haven't caught a single fish. I go to a nearby lake to fish after work. It would be like 4 p.m. in the afternoon. I'd fish for 1-2 hours with no catches, not even nibbles. I felt like I tried everything, and nothing worked.

I would walk up and down a bank and under a bridge to get nothing. I go especially when it rains and when it gets close to dark. I believe I've casted every type of plastic lure and color with the exception of an inline spinner (because i know I'll snag it immediately). I've tried different techniques and tempo (even hopping every 20 seconds off the bottom), Light 1/16 oz to weightless, bobbers to dropshots to no avail.

I know it's me because other anglers come into catch fish almost immediately in the same spots right after I leave. I exclusively fish for bluegill and crappie, and the fisherman that comes right after me catch 6-8 inch bass. I tried to copy them closely with similar lures, colors, and jigs, even checking for any information regarding the lake, the fish, and observing the layout as a guide to where and how to cast. Always, even after sometimes 2 hours, i go home with nothing.

This is a rant, I'm demoralized, but I haven't given up. I will still keep trying, I still go to the lake to sit the cool breeze and cast a few times. It sucks that I don't really get any feedback while im there. I hope everyone out there has better luck than me.

Can someone identify this spinner its litteraly the perfect lure

Post image

Small hooks that hides behind the body so it dosen't snag or collect salads while maintaining hookup-ratio.
And a body that gives it weight and makes it easy to cast as well as a profile.
And the blade gives off vibrations and flash. Lost it in Åland a while ago but man it caught perch

After lurking in this sub and looking at a few YouTube videos we finally went fishing for the first time. We got some Amazon telescopic rods, put a 6 lbs line on, attached some corn to size 10 hooks, added the classic red bobbers, and couldn’t stop getting bites from panfish!! This was so much fun and we were definitely HOOKED!! Thanks guys!
