Port Phillip Bay - snapper charter - best times to go?

Hi,

I booked a snapper charter for 6AM Nov 8

the charter guy texted me and strongly recommend i move it to early Dec, 3PM, saying there's much more in afternoons, and that snapper is best mid nov to all Dec

I have been with him before and it takes about 40-45 mins to get to the fishing spots, so the actual fishing windows are probably closer to 6:45AM-10:15AM for morning and 3:45PM-7:15PM for arvo

I am not sure if he is recommending this in good faith as I don't know much about fishing but nearly all the research I've done indicates that Dec isn't as good.

Any advice?

🐠 Fish Talk Common mistakes

I've recently moved to FNQ and taken up fishing again after last wetting a line with my Dad when I was a kid. I'm not the most patient person, and hopes I would fare better than my childhood days have faded pretty fast.

I've set out to learn to fish with lures/soft plastics. I've had about 10 sessions lasting at least a few hours, mostly arvos and evenings, and only caught a tiny flathead on the first outing. That piqued my interest, but it's been doughnuts the last month or so. Some bites, nothing solid.

Using a Shimano Sienna 2500 reel and 6'6 Viper FGX rod spooled with 15lb braid, 15lb fluoro leader. I've tried multiple plastics, including the popular motor oil minnowz. I've fished mostly estuaries in Cairns northern beaches and also had a crack on the banks in Cooktown. I'm trying to learn techniques for reeling in/presenting the lure and have specifically targeted flatties a few times.

I'm planning to give bait a go and find some mates or a club to fish with, but keen for any advice on what I might be doing wrong. I know there's so many variables, but perhaps I'm missing something obvious. Thanks!

Boat advice

Hi guys, really appreciate your input.
I’m looking for my first boat. Ideally this will be the one I take around Australia exploring behind my dual cab also. I want to be able to do estuaries, reefs like ningaloo, out front of maroochydore chasing mackerel on good weather days etc. It will be 90% by myself. Budget up to around $15-$18k if need be. Thanks heaps for your time too. Cheers

🐠 Fish Talk Big lures in Sydney Harbour

Is it just me or the fish mostly ignore any larger lures (10cm+ ones)? To be fair, I catch a lot of fish even larger pelagics using micro jigs (10-15g), small hardbodies annd plastics, but whenever I try larger lures on a heavier setup I don't get any bites for weeks sometimes, and when I get, it is usually a barely legal tailor. I see big kings cruising near the shore line but they are never interested in them. Sometimes 1 or 2 of them chases the lure but didn't commit. Salmons only reliably chases micro bait presentations. So my question is why larger lures aren't as effective in the harbour as in ocean ledges? Is it because the bait is usually much smaller in the harbour?

Is it really that difficult to chase those bigger models landbased in the harbour especially they usually only spend a fraction of time within casting distance compared to boat fishing where you can actively search and chase them? Or I am just very unlucky?

🐠 Fish Talk I built a free Melbourne pier fishing planner β€” feedback welcome

Hi everyone! I made https://melbournepierfishing.com/ as a personal hobby project to help plan pier fishing around Melbourne.

Choose your starting suburb, driving limit and target species, and it compares nearby piers to suggest two options and fishing windows over the next 3 or 7 days. You can also look up a pier directly.

It’s free to use. I’d love feedback from local fishos: are the suggestions useful, and what would make planning a session easier?

The forecasts use broad weather and marine models, so please check local conditions, access and official warnings before heading out.

Disclosure: I built and run the site.

I got a good deal on marketplace with a few combos, but I also got an atomic arrow bream rod that seems repairable, would it cost more than the rod is worth and if it doesn't where would I go for a good deal but still good quality

🌊 Fishing Spots Heading to Byron for Christmas, fishing spots welcome

I’m heading to Byron for Christmas for 5 nights. Will be doing a a mix of hiking, beach, waterfalls, wellness retreat, flying my drone and ofcourse fishing.

Happy to hear your best recommendations regarding fishing spots all the way from Ballina up to Tweed Heads.

I”ll have a rental car and will be taking my fishing gear, which I’m buying for the first time end of this week.

Any other things to note which I should know about are also welcome. Thanks in advance

Has anyone fished Callala creek in Jervis bay before?

I was just wondering because it’s quite a small creek but it looks like a prime zone for stuff like flathead and whiting.

Any info is much appreciated.

Broke a brutal skunk marathon with my first flatty πŸ‘Œ

New to fishing, picked up the hobby this year. Had beginners luck and landed on my first session, but for the last couple months these fish have been avoiding me like they owe me money. Different baits, different times, different places. Couldn't catch a break to save my life.

Rigged up the finesse worm drop-shot for the first time today and snagged my first dusky (I think). Hope as been restored for my future angling success.
