9 day Itinerary Rovaniemi & Inari

Hey everyone! Here is our 9-day winter road trip itinerary for Lapland in mid-January (with a rental car, group of 4 adults). Looking forward to feedback, must-try food spots, or any last-minute winter tips!

We would love to know if our current schedule is already way too packed or stressful, especially considering winter driving conditions and short days. At the same time, are there any unique or awesome activities we might have completely overlooked that are totally worth doing in these areas?

We would also like to add some relaxed nature activities like scenic walks or snowshoeing (skiing is not an option unfortunately). Since daylight is very limited, is it safe and realistic to do some of these walks or snowshoeing trails on our own in the dark with headlamps, or should that strictly be kept to daylight hours?

Our main priority for every evening is to keep things completely open. We have a private sauna at our accommodation and want to spend our nights relaxing, cooking together, using the sauna, and watching for the Northern Lights right outside if we are lucky.

Day 1: Arrival in Rovaniemi late afternoon

Evening: Walk around town, dinner, or drinks at a bar

Day 2: Drive to Inari via Saariselkä

08:00: Early start from Rovaniemi on the E75 towards Inari 11:30 – 15:00 (Optional): Winter walk along the Luttojoki River in Saariselkä, drive up to Kaunispää Peak for the panoramic view, and lunch at the summit restaurant Late afternoon: Check-in at our lakeside cabin, fire up the private sauna, and first Aurora watch on the frozen lake

Day 3: Inari

11:00 – 12:00: Reindeer farm visit Afternoon: Open / looking for nature walks, snowshoeing, or other cool local activities

Day 4: Inari

10:00 – 13:00: Ice fishing on Lake Inari Afternoon: Visit to Siida – Sámi Museum

Day 5: Inari

10:00 – 12:00: Activity still unknown? Afternoon: Open / looking for scenic spots or relaxing walks

Day 6: Drive back to Rovaniemi

Morning: Drive back towards Rovaniemi Afternoon: Santa Claus Village at the Arctic Circle Evening: Check-in, dinner

Day 7: Rovaniemi

Daylight hours: still unknown, maybe a walk at Ounasvaara? Afternoon: Arktikum Museum & Science Centre Late afternoon: Visit to the Arctic SnowHotel

Day 8: Day trip to Kemi

Morning: driving to Kemi Daylight hours: Icebreaker cruise Afternoon: Lunch and optional quick visit to SnowExperience365 at the SnowCastle resort before we drive back to Rovaniemi

Day 9: Departure, Flight back home

Thanks for reading and letting us know what you think.

Greetings!

Lapland / Rovaniemi in late January 2027

We are two adults traveling to Rovaniemi in late January 2027. We have booked a private sauna experience and plan to do the icebreaker cruise in Sweden. Other than that, we don't have anything planned other than relaxing. He insists on doing Santa's Village & maybe get a drink at the ice hotel but other than that - any suggestions on what we HAVE to do? We have done a husky tour in Quebec so there's no need to do that. Is a reindeer sleigh ride a fun activity? We don't want to book a hike because it'll be too cold to enjoy it - so I'm just looking for activity suggestions.

First-timer Northern lights

I’m visiting Finland late December and going to see northern lights at Tromso and Lofoten islands. Are northern lights visible during that period? I’m worried if it’s too cold and clouds are blocking the northern lights.
