Yeah... I tell people Berserk is truly amazing in story, characters, art, etc... All you need to do is be able to stomach things like.. Troll rape caves....
73
u/soundgaszm 14h ago
I tell that it's not about gore, violence or fucked up shit. It's a very tragic and dramatic story and the will of a tormented guy to go on no matter what. For me that's the beauty of the work

u/RinkinBass 14h ago
I still find
"adult attack" to be the worst moment in the story. Not only for the violence explicitly in frame, and the implied sexual nature of it, but also the violence off frame (the wings were destroyed already and it was trying to fly away the whole time), and on top of that the implied nature of their lives in the village that it would be common enough that the kids would identify and name it. It's horrible in both a fantastical way, and a very real and grounded way.52
u/ArabAesthetic 12h ago
There's a woman who does book reviews whose review of Berserk i really enjoyed. She quit reading pretty soon after the Golden Age arc because of its depiction of women and sexual violence.
She made the observation that when an act of sexual violence against a woman happened she just couldn't help but notice that the woman was drawn and positioned in a way to draw attention to her figure, breasts etc. she gave a few examples and.. yeah.
I'm sure Miura's intent was far from making sexual violence "sexy" but I understand that from the perspective of a woman this can be incredibly jarring.
14
u/creepykreme 7h ago
The sexual assault against female characters is highly sexualized, is drawn to be tantalizing, and is indistinguishable from rape hentai.

Merph?
But yeah, I really enjoy Berserk and think it has many redeemable qualities, but itās quite clear Muira had blind spots. He is an equal-opportunist when it comes to suffering, just slightly different depictions.
I wouldnāt recommend it lightly to people either. In fact, a lot of my favorite art is like that (Eva, David Lynch, metal music).

I wish I could read Berserk purely because of how beautiful the art is. But I know only a handful of the times there is rape in it and that's already way too much rape.

Its really good but the main character is the most accurate representation of depression that I've seen in media. So it's not like a "fun" watch.

I would, but I would definitely always add the qualifier of it being just as much a psychological thriller as it is a mecha action series.

If you like Evangelion, I canāt recommend Madoka Magica enough - I just watched it for the first time last week, and man, itās such a great, well-written series. Donāt take its cutesy artstyle at face value - itās definitely a psychological horror show in the same vein as Eva. Itās the Eva equivalent for the Magical Girl genre of anime, like how Eva was a dark subversion of the mecha genre up to that point.
I canāt stop thinking about it, itās so good and explores similar themes of hope and despair that Eva does. Itās also one of those series that gets better on rewatch due to

The first 5 seasons is genuinely some of the best TV I've ever watched and the 5th season's finale was supposed to be the series finale, but it just kept going. Watch those and it won't feel like as much of a commitment, and then continue with the rest of the seasons as something to pass the time.

3
u/serotoninzone 6h ago
If you want to watch legitimately good tv, watch up until season 5. If you want to watch something enjoyable that isnāt trash, watch up to season 9 to 10 (maybe).
I respect Jensen, Jared and the rest of the team for the time they put into it. I respect the show for how long it went on. This was my first favourite show and is still ranked amongst my current favourites
But seasons 10-15 is when it went deep into creative bankruptcy lmao. To the point that now that I have watched it once all the way through, I canāt bother to do it again.
I just pick at specific episodes that I like here and now. Like the Groundhog Day episode, the tv show episode with Gabriel, the second ghost facers episode, and the TDKSLAMMER episode.
You may of noticed that 3/4 of the episodes listed took place in season 5 or before. That aināt no coincidence lol.

Gritty dark horror show on the cw where ppl can't say fuck, half the fandom decided the show has only 5 seasons, they fight god, insane meta plots, one of the worst endings of a show ever, the show hates parts of its fanbase and makes fun of it in the actual show, parts of the writers room seemingly hate each other and do their best to overwrite stuff established by another writer, a significant part of the fandom thinks the actors are secretly fucking but cant decide WHICH actors are fucking, every showrunner and writer seems to have a very unique take on the characters and they dont bother to find common ground at all, crazy behind the scenes rumours and conspiracies, 'lets make a grimdark manly man horrorshow about manpain and cast two male models as the leads. Wait why is our fanbase like 80% chicks? Ewwww', a fandom so divided ppl might as well be watching entirely different shows, the creator having an obsession with one of the actors that carries over to other projects, literally they drop the characters onto the real life set at one point and the whole cadt and crew gets killed, last minute gay confession that half the fandom flat out denies happened, immediate fridging of said gay character, a genuinely embarrassing treatment female characters, multiple failed backdoor pilots and abandoned storylines, next level memes and oneliners, they used lube instead of water, i could go on.
One of my favourite shows, literally nobody should watch this.

Warframe, every time Iāve tried to get someone into this game Iāve failed. I probably had the wrong approach but still. It has to come naturally, if you donāt like the game enough to play on your own then you probably just donāt like the game.
38
u/DrettTheBaron 12h ago
I keep returning to Warframe every year or few months, do a couple missions and uninstall it.
I really like the combat and movement and all that jazz but I genuinely just don't understand the missions and progression. It also feels like everyone is so much better than me. Whenever I start a mission and need to kill x amount of something I end the mission and realize I have like 3 kills because everyone else's has fuckin aimbot or something and insta kill anything within their point of view.

Hahaha, this is me but I come back to play like twice a week because I want to finish the story quests and farm Styanax prime and join events like that Tau event that's letting us travel to a new solar system soon.
I've grown to just accept people play the game for me on a lot of missions, but I definitely wish they toned down the power we get, I feel so useless with my Caliban lol.
I actually used to play this game religiously YEARS ago, like when raids were still a thing, before we even had operatorsand drifters, but recently getting back on with a new account to get a fresh experience, I think I'm just getting old and can't keep up, I can't even keep up with how fast people move even with bullet jumping.

4
u/Previous_Active5407 11h ago
Tbh a lot of the content is repetitive by the time you get to steel path the game basically plays itself only bit of challenge is eda or eta and even then with properly invested frame they also become easy, at a certain point you just start fashion framing for something to do

Warhammer 40,000
Love it a ton, but it's hard to recommend when you can't even play the tabletop that everything is based on without dumping literal hundreds of dollars just to have a viable tournament army. Sure, there is Combat Patrol, but that's still $100+ for a single player to have a start, and you still need the modeling supplies like glue and sprue clippers. The costs stack up fast.
The only way I could recommend entry to the tabletop of the hobby is Kill Team, a different game from 40k, and I still feel like it's unnecessarily over-complicated and over priced.
55
u/RicketCrickets 12h ago
Way cheaper to stick to books, and games.
Plus you don't have to witness the Garden of Nurgle scent tour during a tournament.

I used to play lots of 40k and WFB back in the day, and they'll always have a place in my heart. But the best thing I ever did in terms my love of the hobby was to start playing other games by companies other than GW.
These days I playing mostly Bolt Action, Star/Frostgrave, King's of War, Pilliage and K47.
The downside is your pool of opponents is far smaller and the games aren't for evreyone, but I wouldn't go back to GW games now. The player base is also far less toxic.

Yuujou (the power of friendship) is actually a pillar of Shonen Jump; it is essentially written into the guidelines that it should be included in your story if you are to write with them.
A notable exception is Death Note, which warped the power of friendship.

I think I played it a few years ago when chapter 2 was released, and I really do agree. I love how discomfort just permeates through the game. Having reread it more recently it's also very much a time capsule of the 2010s, like I wouldn't say it "aged poorly" for the most part but it comes off as an unintentional period piece for being a teen in that time that might not resonate with all audiences.

Yessss. It's so chaotic until it's not, and then it's pure chaos again. You never know what you will get.

I read your description, and got curious enough to look them up.
I have just listened to āFlat Earthā, and I'll admit I feel like asking "What the fÕ½ck did I just hear?"1

Oh man yes I love this game (series?)! It is so incredible and fun and each run is so radically different. But man there are some BS rooms. Like floor 1 cellar with champion face-spiders in a micro-room with spider spawners.

The one that always gets me somehow is the tiny bridge with the 4 bomb flies

Right when you are on the cusp of giving up, the game gives you a first treasure room a q4 or 20/20 or mutant spider or inner eye or cricket's body

u/Desperate-Table28 8h ago
and then right as your run is going amazing you die in the most bs way possible

Its also one of the few games from its era that still goes strong, mainly because it went legit and got a steam release when many didn't or didn't until much later (like the Sonny series)

I was gonna suggest this too. Trying to get dead god. Itās probably my favourite game, but I wouldnāt recommend anyone to it, the hatred it makes me feel at timesš

Berserk is probably my favorite piece of fiction, but the Fandom makes it impossible to recommend. 80% of kids just see the edgy stuff, and think that that's what it's about, instead of really paying attention.
4
u/creepykreme 7h ago
Itās also an intolerable fandom to interact with as a woman, in my experience. I love Berserk, I have criticisms of it, but I love it. And the fandom is extremely toxic to any woman who says they donāt love the hyper-sexualized rape.

Oh, I thought Murder Drones was widely liked. I watched, like, an episode so I have no idea but Iāve never seen hate of it outside of people calling it cringe bc itās an indie YouTube series
17
u/Camelotterduck 10h ago
I watched the whole series and honestly am very confused about what the actual story was. It doesnāt feel like the episodes have any kind of continuity. That said I wouldnāt say I disliked it. It was just an unusual viewing experience.

A lot of people were saying mainly Uzi was cringe, but I feel like she was kinda written to be that way.

i think i watched episodes 1-3 and maybe 4, but thatās about it
the only Glitch series that really grabbed me was Meta Runner S1, and that was long before they were even Glitch1

I love stellaris, when my friends ask about It its just like this meme, I would never recommend it
1
u/CaedustheBaedus 12h ago
150 hours in Stellaris and just got back into it this week after like a year of not playing it. And I'm just sitting here wondering why tf my stability is so low and where all my consumer goods went.
My friend who has 1500 hours and every DLC watched my stream and even he was dumbfounded.
Then I play CK3 which I have 400+ hours in and I still get pissed at religion/culture causing so much unhappiness
2
u/EarlDooku 11h ago
Trying to get into it now but the entry barrier is quite high. I play a lot of strategy games (virtual and tabletop) but this is something else. Every youtube guide that is "for beginners" fails to explain what the goal even is or what we are trying to do

u/GraniteSmoothie 12h ago
A game where 1k hours is considered the tutorial. It's serious video game addiction bait. If it isn't the most fun, dopamine milking nonsense to take Gellibolu one last damn time though.

RWBY 100%. I absolutely adore it. I love the show so much. But, I can admit, it's an indie show for most of its duration, and it suffers from issues that come with being one
17
u/ShinjiIkari99 13h ago
Well, being an indie show is one thing. Then there's the part of the "fandom" that blatantly hates on the show, especially those who say "Monty didn't want this". Which is why whenever I recommend RWBY I tell them to stay away from the fandom.
8
u/ShittyDuckFace 13h ago
The show is great, as long as you don't discuss it with people who watch it.
2
u/TheBeastOfCanada 10h ago
This was genuinely my experience getting into the show. Before I got into it, I was surrounded by this discourse about how awful it was and how it betrayed Montyās vision etc; it was during the Adam/Bumbleby controversy to, so it was a pretty ugly time.
I went into it thinking it was going to be hot garbage and became hooked for the rest of the year. Not only this, but I find out that Montyās own family told people to stop using him to attack the showā¦only for those same āfansā to attack them

u/Falchion92 13h ago
I love the concept but the execution was absolutely terrible and itās such a shame that this series wasted its potential.
4
u/Luchux01 13h ago
It also has some quality issues after Volume 3. How much that affects your enjoyment depends on the person, which is why the fandom is so divided and so active.
When you got a show like this that has a lot of unrealised potential it gets the creative juices flowing

u/JadedEstablishment43 12h ago
Season 3 built it up to be so good and it (understandably) fell off hard. I don't think I've watched past volume 7. Is it worth it?

u/Phoenix_Champion 5h ago
Honestly for me RWBY was something I loved but even separated from the larger community until I stopped watching it I could tell it wasn't doing so hot.
Genuinely trying to watch it after Vol 3 was slowly becoming a pain in the ass. At first it was that members of the Rooster Teeth site could watch a week before YouTube and people who aren't paying.
Next it was paid members get to watch it a week earlier than free members, who got to watch it a week earlier than YouTube.
A couple seasons later and YouTube stopped getting episodes - Meaning the only way you could watch it was a god awful site that loaded the videos terribly.
And then it wasn't free anymore. You had to find a pirate site or pay either Rooster Teeth or Crunchyroll to watch it.
And then of course the quality of the fight scenes fell so the Rule of Cool that the series was born with wasn't doing enough to carry the story that was becoming more prominent, which was in turn failing to refer to tropes that are important to a story. One of the most common thing that fails to happen is 'Show don't tell', and we end up getting an animatic after Vol 9 basically saying 'Yeah Vale was attacked again off screen and it fell for real this time.'

I really liked RWBY, too. I don't think I missed a single weekly release for the entire time Rooster Teeth had the show on their website. Season 8 is where I lost my love for the show. That season finale made me so upset that when Season 9 was on a different platform, I didn't bother looking for it.

I just looked it up. I had no idea there were so many seasons. Iāve never watched the show but I have met a couple people that are obsessed with it.
6
u/SideGlittering7091 13h ago
Itās at 41 seasons across 3 series plus the movie, the audio dramas, the books, the comics, the 5 or 6 spinoffs, etc.. Itās a lot. I donāt actually think you should stop at series 10 I just think itās a good hopping off point if someoneās looking for one. I do recommend starting with the 2005 series 1!

Yes. The later seasons get⦠pretty bad, but not watching them at all? Learn to embrace the cheese

u/Lazerbeams2 13h ago
There's cheesy and there's... just bad. Jodie Whittaker's seasons were the latter and I doubt Russel T Davies was able to rescue it

I watched the David Tenant run and couldnāt really be bothered to watch anything else about the series. That run was pretty good but the whole thing is an insane rabbit hole of lore that goes all the way back to black and white TV

My brother and I were having this very conversation this weekend, as both ex LoL players, pretty hardcore. I love the game, to this day. It's just the other people that play it that made me quit.
I've got limited hours of the day for entertainment. Having an overentitled 17 year old having a tantrum ruining it isn't in the schedule anymore.

u/ZOMPAZ_no_CAP 12h ago
Was about to start playing it after arcane, luckly i got stopped

You don't need to be scared of mobas. Especially with League you somehow only hear stories of addicts who rage at everything but I've been playing mobas for a long time (not lol tho) and I just play a game every so often, I don't think I've ever raged.

House of Leaves is one of my favorite books, a truly wonderful work of ergodic literature.
But it is so incredibly layered, confusing, and constantly changing what you understand to be real or believeable that it can deal psychic damage to the reader. You may feel as mentally unwell as some of the characters in it.
At least the book tells you this as well.
This is not for you.
