Mod Post New Cake Flair

Due to the number of cake posts in this sub, and requests to allow filtering of them, we are adding a new flair: “cake-spectation”

For cake posts, please use this flair - and we as mods can change the flair if reported as “incorrect flair” as well. This should make it easier for those who don’t want to see cake posts to filter them out.

--

Also - u/two-ls made the subreddit r/expecaketionvsreality specifically for cake expectations!

Good. The cake ones are fine, but that’s all this sub is now.

I feel like this sub often goes through stages. For awhile it was all nails, then tv dinners. Now cakes. They cycle around, sometimes pick up a new trend. I guess I just feel like, if not cakes, would people be posting anything else right now? If not cake, would the sub be dead? Idk, I'm just kind of happy to see content, and when we cycle back to tv dinners, I'll just stop clicking on those until we move on to the next thing.

This is exactly right and is the reason why I try not to just aimlessly ban everything just because it is currently popular/trending

Don’t forget flowers near holidays and the infamous crystal mugs!

22

u/macaroniandmilk 23d ago

Yes, can't forget the almost guaranteed disappointment served up by 1-800 Flowers every February, May, and December!

I wonder what the next trend will be that replaces the crystal mug. Honestly that trend was kind of fun, because you knew every time it was going to be bad, but I never expected so many varying depths of bad to descend through.

Oh yeah, we’re about to re-enter AI gift season aren’t we.

Oh hell yea. My grandma is 77, and is pretty tech savvy for her age. But she also has pretty much lived 95% of her life where she could trust ads pretty consistently, so she's not fully used to spotting AI yet. She hasn't been nailed by an AI ad yet, but with as many kids/grandkids/great grandkids as she has, it might just be a matter of time.

She's so thoughtful though, I will accept my "crochet amigirumi" (actually just a sock stuffed with old rice) with grace.

As part of the cause of this pinned post, I have created r/aicakevsreality to maybe take the cake load off from this subreddit. Who would I be to criticize and not try and provide a solution. Come and populate the sub with some AI cake y'all. (Edit- or r/expecaketionvsreality for the non prompt cake posts!)

Great idea! Personally, I love real cakes, but the AI ones bother me. Glad there's now a place for the people who enjoy that content.

And how about r/expecaketionvsreality for all the rest of the cake if we get real tired of it *here!

u/chamalis 19d ago

Why not r/cakespectations ?

u/two-ls 19d ago

If you'd like to make it, I encourage it. The name was suggested from another Redditor first. Subreddit off commence

Subbed! Thanks. 😊

Yuppp that was what I thought yesterday

u/BadZnake 23d ago

Eyyy nice. Maybe think about ai flair too?

23

u/Former-Sock-8256 23d ago

We already have one haha

12

u/BadZnake 23d ago

Oh man i guess people just don't use it 😅

14

u/Former-Sock-8256 23d ago

To be honest, a lot of them do! Or if they don’t to start with, they get reported for wrong flair and I put it on. If you are curious you can search based on flair to see when the “ai expectation” is there.

If the reality is AI, it gets removed (since that isn’t reality)

What happens with cakes that use AI inspiration? Those are the ones that annoy me the most and they seem to be taking over the sub. I don’t mind the cakes otherwise.

10

u/VaguelyArtistic 23d ago

I feel like people who uses AI cakes for inspiration don’t realize they’re AI to begin with or they wouldn’t have expected an IRL cake like it, if that makes sense.

19

u/AppUnwrapper1 23d ago

Wish subs would just ban AI.

3

u/BadZnake 23d ago

I wish that too but I'm trying to be realistic at least 😂

4

u/WHYohWhy___MEohMY 23d ago

NOOOO. I have seen so many AI ads for ridiculously beautiful holiday decor and damn it I am DYING to see the real stuff. It’s going to be brutal. 😆

15

u/AppUnwrapper1 23d ago

I guess I meant more the OP using AI. Which seems to be mostly coming from the cakes.

There's tons of YouTube videos where streamers buy random bullshit off Temu or Etsy or whatever and then unbox the results.

u/dobsterfunk 23d ago

Thank you for adding the new cake flair. I'm team cake, so hopefully this will reduce the posts complaining about cake posts.

One thing, though, the first time I saw the cake flair I realised I had no idea what OP thought about the cake reality. I made a quick check and saw a wall of text explanation. One flair feels like it's only there to separate the cake post and it sort of ruins the experience for quick scrollers :)

TL/DR Is there any way to divide the cake flair into happy/unhappy?

1

u/Former-Sock-8256 23d ago

Good question— that or allowing multiple flairs could be a good idea.

3

u/Former-Sock-8256 23d ago

OK, having multiple flares for one post isn’t allowed on Reddit, so I split the cake flare into positive and negative. This might mean that some retroactively are now showing up as negative when they were neutral before, but hopefully that will fix the issue in the future.

Thank you, Former-Sock-8256.

u/VoodooDoII 23d ago

Thank you

I like the cake posts but this sub seems to be exclusively cake now and it's a little sad. I like all the other random shit too

3

u/two-ls 23d ago

How about r/aicakevsreality for the prompted cake and r/expecaketionvsreality for the rest of the cake! Hot off the press made specially for taking the cake load off here!

5

u/VoodooDoII 23d ago

I think I'll be avoiding anything that specifically is made to share ai images honestly lol

1

u/two-ls 23d ago

That's what the other sub is for. Just expecaketions no prompts allowed.

2

u/VoodooDoII 23d ago

Ohh

Like I said, I don't mind the cake posts here. But it feels like the only thing that's been posted lately, so it's nice to have a tag for it specifically

12

u/a_tad_pole 23d ago

would something like cake tuesdays be more effective?

9

u/two-ls 23d ago

How about r/aicakevsreality for the prompted cake and r/expecaketionvsreality for the rest of the cake! Hot off the press made specially for taking the cake load off here!

3

u/mysocalledmayhem 23d ago

Maybe a masterthread pinned post? And they allllll go in there?

3

u/two-ls 23d ago

How about r/aicakevsreality for the prompted cake and r/expecaketionvsreality for the rest of the cake! Hot off the press made specially for taking the cake load off here!

1

u/Former-Sock-8256 23d ago

Love this! Hope it gets used

5

u/TheBoobfather 23d ago

Lol I think this is the best way to handle it, at the end of the day this sub seems to go through trends, I don't mind the cakes, some people do, I feel like if the cakes instead got moved to another sub or even a megathread then something else would take their place. When I joined this sub it felt like 90% of the posts were TV dinners and the other 10% were like, clothes. Now it feels like it's 90% cakes and 10%, well, clothes still. So really it's just a matter of time until something else takes the cakes' place.

5

u/OverlappingChatter 23d ago

I thought I had filtered to never see cakes again, but alas cakes are big this morning. How do I make the filter permanent so they don't show up when I scroll my feed?

1

u/Aggravating_Branch86 21d ago

Why cake-xpectation and not expec-cake-tion?

1

u/Former-Sock-8256 21d ago

Honestly, because I wasn’t creative enough when I made the flair.

3

u/DollarStoreChameleon 23d ago

im kinda tired of the cakes. im here for random shit, not cake, lol

1

u/GhostlyBaconBoy 22d ago

Thank you! Cake posts are fine but I get tired of seeing so many each day. Being able to filter them out in addition to just scrolling past them is helpful.

-18

u/_AYYEEEE 23d ago

And absolutely no one is going to use this it's insane 😭😭 Nobody ever checks flairs or these things before they upload

28

u/Former-Sock-8256 23d ago

Well, this is the best option that we can do without becoming the type of mods who just ban anything that gets complained about. Every time someone reports a post for having the wrong flair, I fix it.

9

u/VoodooDoII 23d ago

Which is why we should report them if it's the wrong flair

Them doing anything at all is enough. This isn't that serious.
