Ray and Debra's House or Marie and Frank's House

Which house do you prefer to live in: Ray and Debra's house, or Marie and Frank's house?? I prefer to live in Ray and Debra's house, because it just has a more homely and cozy atmosphere than Marie and Frank's house

5 questions for anyone who's basically lived across the street from the Barones

Leaving out the obvious ones like Newsday and "Holy crap." This is for anyone who's seen all nine seasons more than once. Answers are under spoiler tags, and it gets harder as you go.

  1. Before she married Ray, Debra worked in PR for which New York sports team?

  2. Robert's bulldog is named after his favorite baseball player. What's the dog's name?

  3. In the series finale, Ray goes in for a minor operation and is sure it's going to kill him. What's he getting removed?

  4. Stefania's dad Marco ends up staying in New York. What does he buy?

  5. Robert was married once before Amy. What was his first wife's first name? Bonus point for the last name.

Answers:

1: The New York Rangers

2: Shamsky, after Art Shamsky from the '69 Mets

3: His adenoids. Then he takes a little too long to wake up from the anesthesia

4: Nemo's, the family's favorite pizza place

5: Joanne. Joanne Glotz for the bonus

Post your score in the comments. If you got number 5 without Googling, Marie has probably already set a place for you at dinner.

The real reason Marie doesn't like Debra is because she reminds her of her sister Alda

Move Over

My husband and I may cuddle in bed, but when it's time to sleep we part ways. We both like to be able to turn this way and that when we need to without impediment. What's your take on this episode? To me, Debra seemed overly unreasonable, taking it as a personal insult. (I know, I know, it's a comedy show.)

Debra is awful, end of story

Let me say up front that yes, Ray is not the greatest of husbands or much of a father, but he is an absolute saint compared to his wife and I feel sorry for him having to deal with her, she is a total POS to him after the first couple of seasons and generally an insufferable harpie. She is the very textbook definition of unhealthy Fe. And almost nowhere in the series is she shown to have any real redeeming qualities.

She commits DV, destroys property (I don’t give a damn what Ray did, it doesn’t make it okay to commit a literal criminal act) excuses Ally being a bully, & supports Peggy’s actions and takes her side over her own husband just to support some girl power narrative. And she does it all because she knows she can get away with it since Ray has no spine or guile. Debra wouldn’t last a week with a more intelligent & headstrong man.

There’s plenty more. She acts like she’s a POW for having to be around Ray’s parents even though SHE was the one who wanted to live closer to them. Yes Marie is overbearing, manipulative, and a busybody, but at end of the day she does care about them. As someone who’s family is almost gone, this is something that really irritates me because so many people would give anything to have one that wants to be around them. She sticks her nose in where it doesn’t belong way too often, shames male sexuality, and is overall self-righteous as hell. She thinks she’s better and smarter than everyone else, and on that note, I find it ironic and hilarious that she hates Marie so much when in reality she’s just a dressed up, meaner version of her. I really wonder throughout the show why they don’t have her just start working, because she is clearly miserable being a housewife (and terrible at it).

If y’all think this is just some anti-woman rant, let’s compare her to Carrie, the wife on ELR’s sibling show King Of Queens. I’m not big fan of her either, and she’s got some serious faults ad red flags of her own, but she is 1000x the wife to Doug that Deb is, even though she doesn’t even cook at all, or keep house much. She can roll with whatever Doug dishes out, respects his desires and interests, doesn’t stand for him being disrespected, and loves her father in spite of how dysfunctional he is. And she is independent and can take care of herself, unlike Debra who seems like she’d be totally hopeless on her own. She is the ultimate first world problem queen.

One last thing that’s very telling to me is that Heaton said herself once that she didn’t like how
angry Debra was made to be. In any case, she has scared me away from the idea of a relationship more than any other non-crazy woman in a piece of media. What a nightmare.

In case you have never actually watched the finale when it aired, you probably missed this post-finale 45 minute behind the scenes special that aired with it.

The Sigh

It amazes me how many toys are scattered all over the house, piled up in the living area, the wall shelves, the kids' rooms and even the medicine cabinet in their bathroom! My husband pointed out that you see Debra, and very occasionally Ray, picking up toys and simply moving them to another pile, but you never see the kids being made to do it. I know this really has no bearing on the episode except Ray is an outcast and can't even find sanctuary in the basement.

I love this one where Amy says "Oh, yeah? Did your mother come over and make things worse as usual?" without realizing Marie was behind the door.

Debra’s Parents! Coincidence..

I thought it would be cool to mention this, as I never heard anyone mention this.

In the show, Who’s The Boss, episode Gambling Jag, Mona is gambling in Atlantic City at a casino. A man approached her (trying to flirt) and tricks her into selling Angela’s necklace.

Mona was played by Katherine Helmond and that man was played by Robert Culp. Such a coincidence that they became Debra’s parents in Everybody Loves Raymond, Warren and Lois! 😅
