Northern taiwan.

This persistent lil guy/gal hopped back up on my leg like 5 times, despite being gently but firmly blown off. (Unless it was multiple identical spiders/ants happening to hop on ky leg repeatedly)

It looks like an ant, but im pretty sure it's a spider? Very cute and cool guy/gal regardless!

(Plus bonus big ass orb weaver because she is, and you all are, amazing- onion for scale!)

Question about boxelder bugs

• Upvotes

Got tons of these guys entering my home as the weather gets colder, I don't really mind as they're harmless but I am wondering why they all seem to die within days of entering the warm house. Is this normal behaviour? They seem to slowly slow down and then just go belly up.

Help with (disabled) insect care

Thumbnail

Edit: I couldn’t find anyone to take care of him, and I can’t take care of him. So I put him outside under a bush. I feel really guilty that I couldn’t find a safe place for him. Is there anything I should’ve done instead?

Help!!

Today I found a giant leaf footed bug that I think is disabled. He‘s sluggish, even after being moved inside where it’s warmer, and he isn’t able to move his back legs.

I don’t want to leave him outside where it’s cold and wet, especially since he didn’t seem to be able to move in that cold. Currently, I have him in a small plastic container with some dirt and leaves, but I know that isn't a permanent solution.

So, I wanted to ask—what are the ideal conditions for him? should I try to get my hands on a bigger habitat and keep him, or is trying to help him just stressing him out? I don’t want to make him scared. Also, if keeping him is the best option, what are the care requirements?

(I do think I need more lid holes, so I’m keeping the lid cracked in the meantime)

I love these little guys, does anyone else have them and do you know if there is a list of things they can eat? I want to try giving them more dinner scraps but I don't know if they can have tomatoes or potatoes. Would they like a little slice of raw bacon? I feel like bug ratatouille and would love suggestions, thank you in advance!

ID Request Identification of the different stages of development of green aphids

Hi, I attached some photos of the bottom page of a cabbage leaf. I think they are all different stages of development, but I don’t know how to identify them, and I would like to ask the experts for clarification. In particular, I don’t know what the tiny “white things” and the “bronze globes” are. I live in northern Italy, the temperatures are dropping quickly, a minimum of 6-8C.

I hope the photos are good, and thank you in advance for your attention🙏🏻

ID Request Moth I’ve never seen before

Hello! This little fellow was hanging outside of my work tonight. It was just chilling (where it is quite chilly), but I didn’t want to get too close and disturb it. I increased the exposure so you can see it a little better. As you can see, the thick black stripes are very black, so I have no idea what I’m looking at here.

Found in Tsukuba, Japan (where there are a bunch of trees).

ID Request What’s this? Can anyone identify? Very tiny and flat, didn't try to fly and it was trying to bend to flip around when it was on its back. Did not attempt to bite me.

I planted a few Quercus Accutisima (Sawtooth Oak). A year later, I saw this weird stem that looked like perhaps a deer was grazing on the tree. I reached for the stem and touched it. It didn’t feel like a twig. It was flexible and squishy. I quickly withdrew my hand and took this picture.

I assume this is a bug, caterpillar, or worm of sorts mimicking a stem. I have tried Seek and iNaturalist. It sees the tree but not the critter on the tree.

My question is: what is the critter in the center of that picture?

This is in Central New York State, USA

Discussion Insects with vision problems?

Hello! I'm a creature designer with an interest in bugs and I'd love to find someone I can consult about the nature of bug eyes, how images are formed in the brains of insects, and how this could be applied to character designs. I hope this is an appropriate place to ask for help, thanks in advance!

ID Request Help with ham beetles in my dermestids

Thumbnail

Hi All,
I keep Dermestids but recently have had an infiltration of ham beetles. Apparently the larvae look so similar that you wont be able to tell them apart, advice is to scrap the whole colony.

There are certainly some larvae I’ve notice that don’t look 100% like the Dermestids, but not enough for me to be sure they’re ham beetle larvae, they just look a little off.
First pic is my adult Dermestids. Second pic is a Dermestid larvae and a questionable larvae that just doesn’t look exactly like a Dermestid. Third pic is the adult ham beetle I’m dealing with.

Is there a way for me to definitely ID what larvae I’m looking at??
If I can save my remaining Dermestids that’d be preferable, but at this point I can only ID the adults apart.

Edit: the species I keep is dermestes maculatus. Idk what exact species the ham beetles are.

Questions regarding the relaxation process and preserving in a floating frame

Thumbnail

I recently relaxed a butterfly and buckmoth in a relaxation chamber, and just removed them a few minutes ago. For something to keep them in, I ordered a lot of floating frames (it has a thin plastic wrap type layer), since I've seen this done before with preserved insects I've bought. I'm a bit nervous to put them in immediately after taking them out of the relaxation chamber. If I put them in now, will they mold or be damaged by trapped moisture? Should I wait for them to dry first, and for how long?
