i'll be curious how you handle the air lines for the rotating cylinder

Problem for tomorrow😬😁

i like the cam idea. depending on the cycle count, you might run in to a issue with that studder in the middle. na hard cam follower will make quick work of that thin plate with enough repetitions

Seasons don't fear the FESTO

Continuous swivel push-to-connect tube fittings for air and water

I may not be very good at designing a cam control system, but I am a champion at finding that weird part on McMaster that you didn't know you needed.

no cycle life rating sadly, the stuff i'm building makes about 4 million repetitions a year, about 10,000 times a day i need that air fitting to swivel without the hoses catching, or air leaking and the need to replace the fitting every week. they make gyroscopic steel air fittings that are slick af, but they'll cost you an arm and a leg.

No way around it. Some parts you have to either pay a lot for or consider them consumable design around that limitation and put it as a weekly PPM inspection and replacement for the maintenance department.

Ah, yeah, at that rate you kind of have to pay the arm and the leg one way or another.

Hopefully OP's application is a little slower-paced.

I would try running the air lines through the rotation axis to decouple the rotation.

Nahh KISS - Keep it simple stupid.

That’s More complex and longer to repair and more chance of rubbing and bursting a pipe and harder to find a leak.
You’re not thinking about the poor maintenance tech who has to fix it quickly on a production line that’s down and costing the company £100,000 a minute.

It’s only flipping 180°

Just run the air line off the left hand side, with silicone pipes and enough slack for the movement and tack it back with a zip tie so it dosent catch on anything else.
It won’t fatigue the pipe, most they may have to replace is the festo elbows every couple thousand hours but that’s a 5 mins task and fittings like that are considered consumables.

That’s how we do it in industry, and if a machine was delivered to me like the way you described when I was in maintenance I would have rerouted it.

Bish bash bosh send it.

festo part #2094

research rotary unions. they have single port and multiport options from all the main suppliers

edit: Deublin 1005-000-037 In-Shaft Union also allows passages through existing axis

Why is there a spring?

It helps go around the corner.

Reduces load on bearing when hitting the turn, smooths movement, increases longevity.

Simple you say

Before the electron, there were cams.

Will not work on high production rates.

1950 solution

This will work 4ever!

Pretty clever

Doesn't this eventually slip?

What do you call such a mechanism?

15

u/Crticanagattah_ 3d ago

It called “I donnt have the budget for 3 cylinders” mechanism.

I mean, with unlimited budget, the solution with fewer parts to maintain is generally still the best one.

Cam. Maybe pin in slot.

I wonder why the spike is there. Maybe in case the spring breaks.

2

u/adamthebread 3d ago

The spike in the slot? That's there because that's the patth the offset pin has to take in order to flip around. It's the roulette of the pin

2

u/FrickinLazerBeams 3d ago

The spike is there to make it so what you see in the video.

2

u/justanaccountimade1 3d ago

The ball bearing doesn't touch the spike.

I love it. Thanks for taking the time to post this.

This is cool! I like outside the box solutions. I did something with a similar motion but just used a gear rack and pinion gear.

For the air, just have the fittings point straight out.
