Do college rankings actually matter that much?

I've noticed that the rankings can differ quite a bit depending on which website you're checking. It's making it difficult to figure out whether the difference between two colleges is actually meaningful.

Did rankings influence your decision much, or did you focus more on placements, faculty and other things?

Is taking an education loan for a private engineering college worth it when the return on investment is uncertain?

Private engineering colleges can be quite expensive, and taking an education loan means carrying a financial responsibility for several years after graduation. Placements may look promising, but there is no guarantee of getting a well-paying job. How do students evaluate whether the investment is worth the risk, and what factors should they consider before taking a loan?

So i scored 86k rank in jee mains in my drop year and I am a gen female , I took aerospace engineering from a tier3 gfti instead of mechanical or any other lower branches in lower nits . Now I am regretting my decision as If I had chose nit , I had that nit tag at least. Idk if aerospace even have jobs in india and especially in my college also i have zero guidance so i am very confused what to do. Should I give jee again this year and choose a nit hereafter ??or try to thrive in this college? If I chose a nit regret of wasting fee of my first year will also be there as I'm from a lower middle class family .but I'm not ews so i don't have any fee waivers or much scholarship 😭😭😭

Former law student looking for affordable engineering programs abroad (scholarships + work allowed). Where should I start?

Hey everyone,
I'm an international student in the US, currently in an English proficiency program. It's not a degree program and doesn't give credit hours. I'm planning to take the TOEFL, and I might also take the Duolingo English Test on my own.

Back home I was a law student, but I realized it just wasn't for me, so I decided to take a leap and come here. The problem is that tuition in the US is insanely expensive, and I'm not sure I can make it work long term.

What I do know is that I want to study engineering. I'm a huge motorsport fan, and that's what pulled me toward it. I haven't picked a specific field yet, so I'm open to mechanical or anything else that could lead into motorsport.

I'd love some advice and direction on what to do next. I'm looking for:

Affordable tuition

Scholarship opportunities

Programs taught in English

The ability to work part-time while studying

Any country or school is on the table. If you've been through this, or you know a program or scholarship that's worth looking into, I'd really appreciate hearing about it. And if there's something I should be doing right now to prepare, tell me that too.
Thanks in advance, everyone! 🙏

How should I prioritise M.Tech preferences through GATE Chemical Engineering for placements + a fully funded PhD abroad?

I am a Chemical Engineering graduate currently working at Reliance Industries, with around 3 years of work experience. I have a GATE Chemical Engineering score of 600 and am planning to appear for GATE again to improve my score and increase my chances of getting into IISc.

How should I prioritise my preferences during counselling ?

I wanna drop and join in btech again

I am 17M and I have joined b-tech in cse at my local clg but the thing is that clg is so shitty that I wanna change that clg next year (I got my mum's approval) but I can't figure out if I have to do a credits exchange or just start everything from scratch

Please recommend colleges across India ( no vit SRM) some good colleges which do not have tough entrance exams and have good fee structures if possible recommend some colleges which have credits exchange

Is it worth changing your preferred branch just to get into a better-ranked institute?

College and branch selection can have a big impact on the next few years of study. Some students prioritise the institute's reputation, while others prefer to study the branch they are genuinely interested in. For those who have faced this dilemma, what influenced the final decision?

How should JoSAA choices be ordered when college reputation and branch preference point in different directions?

During counselling, a higher-ranked institute may offer a less preferred branch, while a lower-ranked institute may offer a branch with better alignment with long-term career plans. The choice becomes especially difficult when placement statistics are inconsistent across branches and colleges.

What factors should carry the most weight while preparing a choice list: branch interest, institute reputation, placement consistency, academic flexibility, or opportunities for higher studies?

For people who took a second drop for JEE, what made you decide it was worth trying again instead of joining a college?

I've seen people debate whether taking a second drop for JEE is worth it or if it's better to join whatever college you get after the first attempt. For those who actually took a second drop, what made you decide to give it another year? Was it because you felt you could improve your rank significantly, weren't satisfied with your options, or had some other reason? And looking back, do you feel it was the right decision?

Can local colleges get you into Cybersecurity

My main goal is to become a web pentester.

I'm currently in 11th std. My parents convinced me to get jee mains with good marks to get into top colleges of India. Despite that I'm weak in physics and chemistry, and I'm in jee coaching (PW), where I don't understand 80% of the concepts. I don't really think I can score very well in JEE mains. I prefer to work hard for 12th boards and MHTCET and get direct admission into college based on 12th boards percentage or cet percentage if it goes well.

But my parents are not happy with it because they said local colleges usually have low quality teachers and the degree is not much recognized. Also they said they will not guarantee you a placement.

Some advised me to get into a similar college, and do a cybersecurity cert like eWPT or OSCP side by side with the college going in. And college doesn't really matter, I should focus on building practical skills. It sounds good but my parents don't agree much with it.

For BTech admissions, is a government college always a better choice than a private one?

I'm confused about whether government colleges are always the better option for BTech or if some private colleges are worth considering too. Government colleges usually have lower fees, but private colleges may offer good placements and facilities. For students who have compared both, what would you recommend?

Stuck in a dead Tier-3 rural college (BNCOE Pusad). Parents ready to pay ₹1.5L cancellation fee for a drop. Need honest advice on what to do 😭😭😭

Hey everyone, using a throwaway account because I am under immense stress and completely lost. I need some brutally honest advice from seniors who have faced this.

My Current Situation:

I recently took admission in CSE at BNCOE, Pusad (Yavatmal district, Maharashtra). My parents forced me into it initially. The reality of the college is hitting me hard, and it’s giving me heavy anxiety:

• Surroundings & Crowd: Complete zero-growth mentality. Nobody talks about building things, learning skills, or personal growth.

• Placements & Infrastructure: Practically zero campus placements. Very poor facilities.

• The Jail Factor: The college is extremely strict about attendance. I have to sit through useless lectures for 6-8 hours daily, leaving me with zero time to learn skills or explore what's actually happening in the industry.

My Personal Dilemma:

It’s not that I completely hate tech, but I absolutely do not want to become a mechanical corporate slave (a 9-to-5 robot) doing low-end grunt work. I have a strong interest in public speaking, leadership roles, and big-picture fields like geopolitics/philosophy. If I stay here, my confidence and these qualities will completely die in this dead environment.

The Current Conflict (The Drop vs. Stay Option):

My parents see that I am miserable, and they are surprisingly supportive. They told me we can withdraw the admission. However, the college is demanding ₹1.5 Lakhs as a cancellation fee because the seat will go vacant.

₹1.5 Lakh is a massive amount for my middle-class family. My parents are willing to absorb the hit for my sake, but I am terrified. What if I take a drop, fail to crack a good exam next year, and end up ruining my future? That fear is paralyzing me.

The Plan I’m Thinking Of:

If I cancel the admission, I want to take a drop year to prepare again and explore the tech landscape properly. My main goal would be to target a much better engineering college in a tier-1 city (like Pune, Mumbai, or Nagpur) where the campus environment is highly vibrant, active, and offers the exposure I need to grow my personality and career.

My Questions to Reddit:

  1. Is it worth losing ₹1.5 Lakhs right now to escape a zero-placement, strict-attendance rural college? Or should I just stay on the back bench, deal with the strict attendance, and try to study online?

  2. Is it possible to avoid becoming a "corporate slave" in the tech industry if I focus on high-income skills, freelancing, or product management? Does a better college environment help with that?

  3. How risky is a drop year in Maharashtra right now given how unpredictable MHT-CET and admissions are?

Please give me your honest, unexaggerated views. I am panicking right now. Thanks in advance

JoSAA 2026 Rounds 1–5 Master Opening & Closing Ranks Report (Clean, Searchable, Side-by-Side PDF)

Hey everyone,

Finding it painful to click through the official JoSAA portal or juggle multiple spreadsheets just to check round-by-round trends?

I put together a complete, unified master dataset and generated a searchable landscape PDF report covering JoSAA 2026 (Rounds 1 through 5 side-by-side across 13,000+ records).

What’s inside:

  • Wide Format: R1 to R5 Opening and Closing Ranks placed side-by-side for easy comparison across rounds.
  • Complete Scope: Includes all institute types, academic programs, quotas, seat types, and gender categories (including official Preparatory P designations).
  • Searchable & Clean: Formatted for easy Ctrl+F lookup on mobile or desktop without messy table breaks.
  • included jossa_2026_extended_analysis.csv file in google drive where i created more columns to show statistical difference between round 1 and round 5 using different methods

Feel free to share this with your study groups or anyone who might find it useful during counseling research. Hope it makes tracking cutoffs a bit easier!

Does Anyone Else Feel Like the 2023–2027 B.Tech Batch Has Faced Change After Change?

The 2023–2027 B.Tech batch: The luckiest generation with one of the toughest experiences? (Part 1)

I have been thinking about our batch lately, and honestly, I feel like we are both the luckiest and the unluckiest generation of engineering students.

Most of us were born in 2005 or 2006, and our academic journey has been full of unexpected changes.

Let me explain why.

🟢 Why are we lucky?

We are living in an era where AI tools like ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Claude, and many others are making learning easier than ever.

Need help understanding a difficult concept? We have AI.

Want to learn a new programming language? We have AI.

Working on a project or struggling with code? We have AI to guide us.

We have access to technology that previous generations could only dream of. Learning new skills has become more accessible, and building projects is easier to get started with.

Honestly, that's a huge advantage.

🔴 But here's where things get complicated.

Many of us started believing that knowing how to use AI would make us smarter and help us crack jobs more easily.

But then comes the reality: we are not the only ones using AI.

Almost every engineering student is exploring these tools. The same AI that helps us learn and improve is also available to the people we compete with.

Simply generating code or getting answers from AI doesn't mean we understand the concepts behind them.

When everyone has access to similar tools, what actually makes us stand out?

Our fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, practical knowledge, creativity, and ability to work independently.

💼 The job market is changing, too.

MNCs and startups are evolving their recruitment processes as technology advances. AI knowledge and practical skills are becoming increasingly relevant in many roles.

We are expected to learn the fundamentals, keep up with new technologies, build projects, and prove our abilities during recruitment.

Sometimes, it feels like the expectations keep changing just when we start getting comfortable.

And this is only one side of the story. Our college experience and the journey that brought us here make it even more interesting.

*Part 2 will cover our education journey, the role of colleges, and what we should do next.
