Beta Nobody’s talking about how amazing trade is in 1.4
I feel like one amazing thing people don't mention enough about 1.4 is the significance of tariffs and trade orders. They add so much player agency and open up a whole side of the game that, at least for me, was previously “set to automate and forget”. For anyone returning to the game, that haven't engaged with the trade mechanics of the game yet, I thought I'd leave a quick guide based on my experience with the beta:
- The easiest way to make money from trade orders is by importing and exporting trade goods like pepper, fur, etc. If you have good market control, you can even tariff both ends of those trades so there are fewer of those trade goods circulating around the markets, which makes your trade capacity for those goods more valuable. The tricky part is getting trade range and trade advantage in markets that produce rare trade goods like tea and cloves. If you're in Egypt, for example, one good coastal urban location in India controlled by a subject with siphoned trade is enough to use as a stepping stone to ship all that tea and cloves to your market in Cairo in the early game. Good relations and power projection are also important because they let you request tariff exemptions and build overseas trading posts and trade centres for trade cap, and mainly trade advantage, in China and Indonesia. Don't build them in too many markets if you want to push mercantilism later, just pick a couple of key markets that produce lots of the raw trade good. Now, once you've managed to get tea and cloves into Cairo, you can tariff their exports so you're the only one distributing them into Europe. With just automated trade, you can't really set up this incredibly lucrative trade network.
- If your owned markets mainly contain your own locations and you want to collapse the price of construction goods, put export tariffs on masonry, lumber and glass. Make sure you have custom trade orders from those markets that exclude lumber, masonry, etc. from exports, and disable automatic trade entirely for those markets.
- Also, tariffs by themselves have a flat impact on the price of goods in your markets. So having a 100% import tariff on fine cloth, for example, boosts its price by 25%, which can be really good for your urban centres.
- Pop demand is valuable, and you don't want to give that to anyone else. So if you have multiple domestic markets producing different goods, make sure to set up trade orders that import produced goods internally. When you set up the trade order, in the “select import market” tab, you can set it to “owned markets”, which updates automatically if you expand later.
- The impact of exports and imports on demand is less than 100%. That means you can artificially generate extra demand if you specialise your internal markets. If one market centred on your capital is good at producing textiles and another market with a local government centre is good at producing tools and weapons, don't build tools, weapons and textiles in all of them. If you have trade cap to spare, specialise each market and export their speciality goods between them. That way, you generate more demand for those goods.
- If you have buildings or RGOs worked by slaves, set up a trade order to import slaves from markets with a high number of eligible slaves—those that meet the religion and culture requirements. I used to do this manually even before the beta, but it was always half broken and didn't work properly. It's working for me now, so give it a try.
Lastly, it's important to note that if you have very low crown power, you might not get much out of micromanaging trade yet. Your trade capacity becomes much more valuable when you have a large enough share of trade income through government reforms and crown power. Once you do, try to stack as many selling efficiency, trade range, sea trade efficiency and trade income modifiers as you can find. In my experience, trade income is incredibly strong because it doesn't increase your tax base and the slider costs tied to it.
There's so much more you can do now, but I feel like I've already gone on for too long :)
footnote: Paradox, please let us copy paste trade order in-between markets I beg of you!

Dev Diary (mod) (feedback wanted!) National Legacys – 45 nations with their own historical mission packs
Hi everyone!
I’ve been working on a mod called National Legacys that gives nations their own historical missions instead of the generic ones. It now covers 45 nations of the 1337 start, from the big ones (England, France, Ottomans, Mamluks) to smaller and less common picks like Navarre, Cyprus, Mali, Yemen (the Rasulids), Florence, Brittany and Brandenburg.
How it works
- Every nation has about 5 themed packs of around 10 missions each (conquest, trade, faith, dynasty…), and you pick one at a time, like the base game’s own missions.
- Finish the right packs and a final capstone pack opens, with two alternate endings: a hard-power path and a soft-power path.
- Missions are built around real places, rulers and events of the era. I also checked them against the real 1337 start, so nothing should be already done on day one.
- English and Turkish. Made for 1.4. It only adds content and doesn’t replace any base file, so start a new campaign.
Workshop: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3799652920
What I’d love feedback on
- Are any missions too easy, too hard, or completing instantly / never unlocking? Please tell me the nation and mission name.
- Do the rewards feel right, and is ~10 missions per pack a good length?
- Which nations should I add next?
I can’t playtest all 45 nations myself, so your reports are the main way I can tune this. The nation list and the small-pack format came straight from Steam comments, so keep them coming. Thanks!

Question Best Capital & Governors for Italy
Hey! I have managed to unify Italy as Milan around 1500 and now (1550) I would like to assess where I should move my capital and local Governors. Currently:
- Capital: Pavia
- Local Governors: Venice, Naples, Florence
- Italian Administration: Palermo
I am around 50+ on Land Values, I will start building a navy and push the naval soon (if that's still optimal). I am also pretty Centralized.
Should I move my Capital to get the Historical Capital bonus? Where should I place my Governors to optimize Control?

Advice Wanted Is it realistic to grow 5k pop locations into cities in 200 years?
I play in the Ukraine/Crimea/steppe area and the starting pop is very low. Is it realistic to turn these 5k pop locations into cities? Not just one location (which migration cabinet action may work), but like every other location, or at least along the rivers?
Either version 1.3 or 1.4 is fine

Dev Diary (mod) Another small peek at my upcoming mod, Megaterranea
Link to the previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/EU5/comments/1x58xwl/making_progress_slow_but_steady/
For starters, Europe is mostly untouched so far, so what you see is absolutely not what Europe will end up looking like, and pretty much everything you see might change, especially the kingdoms in America. There's also a lot of realism in terms of geography and climate that has been sacrificed in the name of fun and worldbuilding. But anyway, here's wonderwall some lore about the area you might know as Canada.
With the geographical changes of Megaterranea, Northern Hesperia (Hesperia is this worlds name for America, named by the greek explorers that discovered it) lies further south and is noticeably warmer, with a climate similar to Scandinavia. At the same time, the currents have changed resulting in colder winters in northern Europe, which means that the straits of Calais freeze during some cold winters, letting settlers and merchants, as well as armies cross the ice. This strait is also what allowed humans to migrate to Hesperia tens of thousands of years ago, spreading far and wide, long before any civilization at all had risen in the world.
The proximity also helped the vikings succeed in their colonizing of Canada, which you can see in the image. The old Norse settlers had a lot of success in Canada, both in settling and raiding, but in 1337 they have either been pushed back or converted, with only a small country remaining, the independent Duchy of Markland, the last holdout still worshiping the true Norse Gods. Norway also has a colony in Helleland, with dreams of expanding into the hudson bay (in-universe name TBD)
In this world there is no Britain or Ireland. So when the Celts of the 6th century BC migrated north west they didn't reach Britain; they reached Hesperia. Here they settled and spread far into the Canadian shield, fighting or allying with the natives, continuing inland. Eventually the Romans came and beat some of them into submission. Then the Roman Empire fell, leaving their cities in the hands of the native Celts, much like they did in our world in England. Here you see some them organized into the Kingdom of Dumnonia in 1337, with the capital of Isca resting at the Hamilton inlet of our world. Many Celts still live in the unclaimed Canadian shield as well, in smaller tribes. With the Dumnonians regularly at war with France, the lands of Brittany and Normandy often change owner. While there is no 100 years war over the crown of France, there is plenty of war nonetheless.
---
This is just a small part of the work I have done so far. In a future post I will share the much greener Sahara, and the kingdoms that have risen there along with their religions, as well as the mysterious new landmasses in the Pacific ocean.
Discussion So... what now? (English Union questions)
So I managed to win (grind through 150 province requirment) 100 Years War by claiming French throne in 1428. I received a solid 3 and a half lines congratulations pop-up that concluded almost a year long situation in a very anticlimactic way and got into an English Union.
Union UI says it exists since 1346, has integration level 7 (whatever this is), and from what I understand - all the laws are passed. Most of the buttons are disabled for me, I have no idea what is going on, I don't understand what should I do with it and even not sure if this is not a bug of some kind.

Advice Wanted Army / Navy Compisition
I want to know what your basic go to template consists of each age, regardless of what country you play.
On the navy side I always build a group of 15 Light Ships and assign them to up to 3 Sea "areas" for maritime presence. On my war navy I just throw in as much heavy ships as i can affort and a number of transport ships so I can transport my biggest army.
On the army side I chill till age 3. I put together 10 Light and 10 Heavy Cavalry with 4 Caravans and 2 Artilleries.
Does it all make sense? I guess not, im just going with the flow. Help me please 😄

Suggestion Theocracies should be able to ask Pope for Military Order Govenrment reform in exchange for Religious Infuence
Title, I switched to theocracy mid game and I’m disappointed it basically have only one Major Reform. Giving option for Military Govornemnt (therefore option to form Jerusalem) would be nice addition
Dev Diary (mod) [WIP] - Three Kingdoms Mod
Inspired by a popular Three Kingdoms mod for CK2 I have started working with AI to develop a complete overhaul Three Kingdoms mod for EU5.
I would love any suggestions or opinions on what you would like to see from a mod like this?
Currently I have divided the Han dynasty into it's local warlords, with the Han Court acting as a building based nation similar to the Yamato court. This allows the player to play as any of the internal warlords as a landed nation.
I have considered changing this to behave similar to Japan in vanilla, with the Han Dynasty directly controlling everything, and instead the warlords being landless nations similar to the Japanese clans. For gameplay purposes I find this route to be less enjoyable.

Image What's the deal with market attraction?

I can't, for the love of me, understand how Tunis can overpower Genoa and Naples this much.
Rather, I don't know how to combat it. They have several technologies that allow them to have north of a 40% bonus over me, two of which are due to diplo focus and the other one which is (aside from absolutely bonkers, btw, incredibly OP) due to their culture or tag (something related to the hafisid dynasty).
The thing is, I don't know how to manage it. Should I call a crusade and take only the city of Tunis, put a governor in it fucking with their market the way I did with London? I don't even need the crusade, Tunis is weak as all fucks. Should I, taking on another direction, try and investigate the one technology I could've investigated, gated behind 8 others, which would derail me?
Idk, help, but that Tunis market is disgusting and I hate it. 😭

Advice Wanted Tips for mexican run
I'm doing my first Non European run in EU5. Picked Mexico as my starti g point and I'm liking it so far. Trying to build an economy, limit fighting and conquering (had two wars in 100 years).
Given how different it is without institutions - what are some key advice?
Things I'm thinking of:
- colonise my way to Alaska and Asia to get some institutions
- create a new market (is the economy big enough for two markets in Mexico?)
- urbanisation as proximity will remain a challenge without institutions
- somehow make my way to north east Americas or Carribbean islands (I'm on Pacific side) so I am ready to get institutions once Europe arrives.
