BSc admissions & info Besoin de conseils sur mon projet d'étude et ma future carrière.
Hi everyone,
I have a major question regarding my future academic and career path.
I am currently a second-year physics undergraduate at UNIGE (University of Geneva). My career goal is to become a full-fledged hardware design engineer (R&D), specifically in semiconductors, quantum tech, and integrated photonics.
My initial plan was to pursue a second Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at EPFL or ETH Zurich to secure a traditional, complete engineering foundation. However, feedback I’ve gathered so far (from AI tools and online discussions) suggests that doing a second Bachelor's would needlessly prolong my studies. Many argue that transitioning straight into an engineering Master’s program offers the exact same recognition, technical depth, and industry opportunities as having done an engineering Bachelor's from day one.
I’d love to get your insights on the reality of the field and the feasibility of my plan:
Is a specialized Master’s at EPFL/ETHZ directly after a physics Bachelor sufficient to be recognized and hired as a core design/R&D engineer?
Does doing a second Bachelor’s bring any tangible value in the industry to justify the extra years?
For context: being a non-EU/EFTA student, academics constraints prevented me from directly enrolling into an engineering Bachelor when I first moved to Switzerland.
Thank you in advance for your time, advice, and constructive feedback!
