Picked this up from home depot I think it’s called the husky 300 mini utility light with rotating head.

All the EDC flashlight kits I see are so expensive but this his every one of my needs for $20.
Hat clip, magnet, flood and beam, warm fuzzy light and red led. I liked it so much I ended up buying two

(Also 40% cheaper than a wuben g5 which is similar)

Question/Advice/Discussion Fixed vs folding knives

Trying to put together an edc kit, just got my flashlight (Streamlight protac 2-AA-X) now I need a dedicated EDC knife. What knife would yall recommend? A folding or a fixed? I like the folders due to size, but if shit goes south I like the fixed knife. Pls put some good recommendations of folders and fixed blades thanks. SIDE COMMENT/ what the FUCK makes some pocket/ folding knives cost 2-300 bucks? Is there really any difference between a $20 knife and a $200 knife?

Niteize S-Biner (small, I believe)

Bought 6 Colombian empanadas with spicy sauce. Didn’t have where to put them safely without the sauce spilling all over my car on the first turn.

Here is where my EDC Niteize S-Biner saved the day, helping me anchor my bag with empanadas in a safe place where spillage was basically impossible.

Love when EDC come in handy :)

Potty Post I have the stupidest requirement that most tools don't satisfy

I fully understand my requirement is insane, and it outside the norm. But I've come into multiple situation where corkscrew on my Victorinox Cybertool has came in handy, and I can't shake that requirement sadly.

I've somehow gotten sucked into EDC youtube and these nextool guys look awesome, the Roxon look amazing and the leatherman.

Does anyone have a suggestions for ether: opening a bottle of wine without a corkscrew (ideally without a shoe). Or a modern multi tool with...

  • A locking knife
  • Decent scissors (if I need pliers i'm getting into the real tools)
  • bottle opener
  • a corkscrew
  • Saw (not mandatory, but good for cutting bread)
  • An awl (just fucking kidding)

Question/Advice/Discussion My Review on the Wuben X4

Post image
21 Upvotes

My review on the Wuben X4.

Now to start this off Wuben did reach out to me and ask if I would want to check this light out. So with that in mind. Here are my thoughts on the X4.

I would not consider myself a “flashlight nerd” by any stretch but I do enjoy a quality light. I have owned all different tiers of light from olight all the way up to Hanko Machine Works. So keep that in mind as well. This is a compact EDC flashlight that has quite a bit going on with it, and honestly, I think it’s an interesting light because Wuben has tried to pack a lot of different features into something that you can still carry in your pocket.

So, let’s get into it and talk about what this light brings to the table, what I like about it, and a few things that are worth knowing before you spend your money on one.

Size and Build

First off, the X4 has a pretty different shape compared to your traditional cylindrical flashlight. It’s more of a rectangular, flat-bodied design, measuring approximately 3.77 inches long, 1.47 inches wide, and 1.04 inches thick. With the battery installed, it weighs around 5 ounces.

So, it’s definitely compact enough for everyday carry, but it’s not the lightest option out there. You’re carrying a rechargeable 18650 battery and quite a bit of functionality in a relatively small package.

The body is made from aluminum, and the overall design gives you a few different ways to use it. You have a pocket clip, a magnetic tail, and a flat bottom that lets you stand the light upright. That magnetic tail is particularly useful if you’re working on something and want to attach the light to a metal surface rather than hold it in your hand.

Main Light Performance

The Wuben X4 is rated for a maximum output of 1,500 lumens, with a claimed beam distance of up to 205 meters.

It uses four main white LEDs with optics designed to give you a combination of flood and spot lighting. That means you get useful coverage in front of you while still having some distance to work with.

For everyday stuff like walking around at night, looking for something in the car, checking the yard, or working in a dark area, that combination makes sense.

But there’s something important to understand about that 1,500-lumen rating. That’s the maximum turbo output, not the brightness you should expect it to maintain continuously.

Independent testing has shown that the output drops after the light first turns on. Depending on the test and conditions, the measured output has varied considerably, with some tests recording a substantial reduction as the light runs.

That’s normal for many compact, high-output flashlights. There’s only so much heat a small aluminum body can get rid of, and the light has to manage that heat somehow.

So, I wouldn’t buy the X4 expecting it to sit at 1,500 lumens for an extended period. Think of turbo as a way to get a quick burst of light when you need it, rather than a brightness level that stays constant.

The brightness adjustment is another feature worth mentioning. Instead of being limited to a few fixed brightness levels, the rotary control allows you to adjust the output across a range.

That can be useful because you can run the light lower when you don’t need much illumination and turn it up when you need more.

The main LEDs do have a cool-white appearance, and independent testing has found relatively low color rendering. For general EDC use, that’s not necessarily a dealbreaker, but it’s worth knowing if accurate color matters to you.

The Side Light

Along with the main light, you get a side light that offers warm-white illumination and RGB lighting.

The warm-white side light is rated at up to 100 lumens, with a claimed color temperature of 4,000K. That’s a warmer appearance than the main beam, which can be more comfortable for close-up tasks.

Think about reading something, looking through a bag, working on a desk, or lighting up a small area without blasting it with the main beam.

You also get seven RGB color options, along with flashing and signaling modes.

Now, are the RGB features something everybody needs? Probably not. But they do give you more options than you’d get with a basic flashlight.

The side light can be useful when you want softer illumination, and the colored lighting gives you some additional options for visibility and signaling.

I wouldn’t consider the RGB functions the main reason to buy this light, but they’re a nice extra if you actually find yourself using them.

Controls and Everyday Use

The controls are probably one of the most distinctive things about the X4, and they’re also something you’ll want to understand before buying it.

You have a mode selector, a rotary brightness adjustment, a side button, and a tail switch.

The selector lets you move between the main-light, side-light, and lock functions, with the exact available operation depending on the selected mode. The rotary control adjusts brightness, while the buttons provide additional activation and quick-access functions.

The tail switch is particularly useful for momentary activation and accessing functions such as turbo and strobe.

On paper, I like the idea of having dedicated controls for different jobs. You don’t have to rely entirely on cycling through a bunch of brightness levels with one button.

The downside is that there are several controls to learn. If you’re used to a simple flashlight with one switch, the X4 may take a little time to get comfortable with.

And that’s something to keep in mind: more features don’t automatically mean a better user experience for everyone. Some people will appreciate having all those options, while others may prefer something more straightforward.

Personally, when evaluating a light like this, I’d want to make sure the controls feel intuitive for the way I actually use a flashlight.

Battery and Charging

One of the biggest advantages of the X4 is its battery setup.

It uses a replaceable 18650 lithium-ion battery, and a 3,400mAh cell is included. You can recharge the light through its USB-C charging port, but you can also replace the battery rather than being stuck with a permanently built-in cell.

I think that’s a worthwhile feature on an everyday carry flashlight.

If you use the light regularly, having a replaceable battery gives you more flexibility. You can carry a spare charged cell, replace an aging battery, or keep using the light without having to replace the entire flashlight when the battery eventually wears out.

Wuben advertises a maximum runtime of up to 285 hours on the main light’s lowest setting and up to 720 hours on the lowest side-light setting.

Of course, those are maximum runtimes at very low outputs. You’re not going to get hundreds of hours of useful high-output lighting from a single charge.

Actual runtime depends on the mode you’re using, the brightness level, the battery, and operating conditions.

The USB-C charging is convenient, too, because you don’t need a special charging cable just for the flashlight. The included battery and charging cable also mean you have what you need to get started.

Durability and Weather Resistance

The X4 has an IP65 rating on Wuben’s current product listing, along with a stated impact resistance of one meter.

That makes it suitable for ordinary outdoor use, including rain, splashes, and dusty conditions, within the limits of its rating.

However, IP65 does not mean the light is designed to be submerged in water. I wouldn’t treat it as a dive light or assume it can survive being dropped into a lake.

For everyday carry, walking around outside, working in the garage, or keeping a flashlight handy for general use, the protection is reasonable.

I’d still take care of it like any other piece of gear, especially around the charging port, battery compartment, and moving controls.

What I Like About the X4

The biggest thing that stands out to me about the design is how much functionality Wuben has packed into this light.

You get a main light with a claimed 1,500-lumen maximum output, a separate warm-white side light, RGB options, adjustable brightness, USB-C charging, and a replaceable 18650 battery.

You also get the magnetic tail, pocket clip, and ability to stand it upright.

That gives the X4 a lot of flexibility for a light this size.

I also appreciate that the battery isn’t permanently sealed inside the flashlight. That’s a practical advantage if you’re someone who uses their gear regularly instead of buying something just to leave it sitting around.

And the side light is genuinely a useful concept. A flashlight doesn’t always need to throw light as far as possible. Sometimes you just need enough light to see what you’re doing without lighting up the entire room.

What I Don’t Like as Much

There are a few trade-offs.

First, the interface has a learning curve. With multiple controls and lighting options, it isn’t quite as simple as grabbing a traditional flashlight and immediately knowing how everything works.

Second, the 1,500-lumen figure can be misleading if you don’t understand how turbo output works. The light can produce that initial burst, but it doesn’t maintain that level indefinitely.

Third, the main beam’s cool-white color and relatively low color rendering won’t appeal to everybody. If you’re particular about tint and seeing colors accurately, that’s something to consider.

And finally, while the flat shape gives you some practical benefits, it’s a different carrying experience from a round flashlight. Whether you prefer it comes down to your pocket setup and personal preference.

None of those things automatically make it a bad light. They’re just the compromises that come with trying to fit a lot of functionality into a compact design.

Who Is the Wuben X4 For?

I think the X4 makes the most sense for someone who wants a versatile everyday carry flashlight rather than a light that does just one thing.

If you want a compact light for everyday tasks, a secondary light for your bag, something useful around the house, or a flashlight with more options than a basic single-beam model, it’s worth considering.

It’s also a good option to look at if having a replaceable 18650 battery matters to you.

On the other hand, if your priority is the simplest possible interface, sustained high output, or a very particular beam tint, I’d compare it with other lights before making a decision.

And if you’re looking for a dedicated long-range light, I’d also look at how its beam performs for your particular needs rather than choosing it based on the maximum lumen rating alone.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Wuben X4 is an interesting little flashlight because it tries to do more than just give you a bright beam.

You get a main light, a separate side light, adjustable output, RGB functions, a replaceable battery, USB-C charging, and a few practical features that make it useful in different situations.

It’s not perfect. The controls take some getting used to, the turbo output drops as the light runs, and the beam characteristics won’t be everyone’s preference.

But I think it’s important to look at the whole package rather than judging it by one number on the box.

For me, the biggest selling point of the X4 is its versatility. It gives you several ways to use one compact flashlight, and that’s really what separates it from a more basic EDC light.

Would I say it’s the right flashlight for everybody? No. But if you like having options and want something that can handle a variety of everyday lighting tasks, the X4 is definitely worth a look.

Literal EDC CCW backpack for EDC

I recently bought the 20L urban ghost from vertex. Nice backpack but I need more space. It is smaller than I thought it was. Also, I don't like that it only has two compartments outside of the CCW compartment. I'm looking for something with a dedicated CCW compartment, and several other compartments, with admin organization also. I plan to use it as my primary work bag, it's primary location will be in the seat next to me while driving. Or next to my desk at my office. Ideally, inconspicuous. No tactical or molle look.
