Look at this new Duolingo feature Product Update: Image Flashcards, Avatar Suits & Chess Game Review (October 2026)

https://reddit.com/link/1xg41xb/video/2hz88i06ouxh1/player

Duolingo just announced three new features 📣

🃏 Image Flashcards
At the end of a lesson, you'll see a picture and say the word out loud. There are no answer choices. Miss one and you'll see and hear the correct word, and the card comes back later for another try. At the end you get a recap of the words you struggled with, along with their translations. You can skip a card or tap "Can't speak now" if you're somewhere quiet.

👔 Avatar Suits
Earn special suits for your avatar during limited-time events by making progress in your lessons. Each event has its own window to collect its featured suits. Once you earn a suit it's yours to keep, and you can switch between your suits anytime. Read more here: Lily's Fright Fest

♟️ Chess Game Review
Review key moments from your games against Oscar, friends or other players in your chess match history. Instead of just showing you the better move, it takes you back to that position so you can find it yourself. Then Oscar explains why your move did or didn't work.

As always, new features roll out gradually, so if you don't have them yet, make sure your app is updated and hang tight.

Look at this new Duolingo feature 🎃 👻 Lily’s Fright Fest – collect pieces, complete puzzles, unlock spooky suits!

Post image
142 Upvotes

Hi all!

Feeling ready for Halloween? 👀 Starting October 21, you can dive into Lily’s Fright Fest and start collecting pieces to unlock a whole lineup of spooky new avatar suits.

Here's how it works:

•Hit your daily lesson goal and you’ll get a mystery chest! Your goal can change from day to day, so check the event hub to see what you need to do.
•Open your chest to reveal one random piece from the collection of 45. If you keep getting duplicates, don't despair – collect 5 duplicates and we'll automatically trade them in for a piece you don't already have.
•Each piece helps complete a puzzle. Collect all 9 pieces in a puzzle to unlock a new suit. Finish all five puzzles and you'll get a limited-edition Halloween suit plus 3,000 gems! 🤑

If patience isn't your thing, you can also grab pieces directly with gems (regional and/or age restrictions apply). Once Fright Fest begins for you, the countdown is on: you’ll have 30 days to collect everything.
And one last spooky warning: the grand prize is a limited-time treat that won’t return so grab it while you can before it vanishes into the night. 🎃
Happy haunting, happy collecting, and let us know what you think below! 👻

General Discussion The Chinese course has an entire unit dedicated to pro-AI propaganda

Section 8, Unit 80, Score 121. Titled Share your opinions about AI, except all the opinions you are taught to share are overwhelmingly positive.

And the phrasing of many of the key sentences that appear repeatedly throughout the unit very much resembles Chinese state propaganda. "Break down traditional thinking" and "work hard (in school) to break down [something]" in particular is eerily reminiscent of the Cultural Revolution – I suspect it is because the word 打破 (break down), a key vocabulary word of this unit, happens to be used a lot in propaganda.

It just so happens that China seems to be one of the most pro-AI countries in the world, with overwhelming public support and government pushes for AI development and adoption in seemingly every aspect of society.

At least whoever or whatever made this course used up-to-date real life sources, which is a good thing I guess.

Constructive Criticism Having to click through 14 screens after a lesson is terrible UX

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

5.6k Upvotes

Honestly, I find myself significantly less likely to do another lesson after having to click through so much rubbish.

Edit to provide more context about what I'm complaining about:

To start with, I'm in favour of gamification. That's what duolingo has historically done really well. I think they are ruining the gamification by thoughtlessly piling on features, leading many users to cease to care about any of them. For instance, I now care less about badges because they are drowned out by a sea of other things.

As others have said in this thread, it feels like independent developers were tasked with building out features without ever thinking about what the experience would be like when they are combined.

Good gamification doesn't feel like never-ending screens. This just encourages the user to click through them as quickly as possible without reading them properly. A couple of screens are great and I think it's only gotten out of hand in the last months. Even if it was just capped at 4 or 5 screens that would be fine, showing different screens each day could also mix things up.

A skip button would also be great.

The rest of the information that wasn't presented in screens could just appear as notification bubbles or something to in the main UI. Many people would probably go check the notifications - but when there's even a small bit of actively looking for the information yourself it makes the experience quite different.

„espinaca” is wrong. “Espinacas” is correct. The same for fresh air. I have a streak of >2100 days and stuff like this has only come up recently. It is truly annoying.

I finally finished my French course and then I did what any sensible man would do and started to learn German in French. It took me 497 days and perhaps some hair loss. Do I speak French? Nah. I mean I do be speaking it, just not fluently. My reading got to a certain level tho, I'll give you that. I can read One Piece in French now. That should be something... Amirite?

Constructive Criticism Not sure I understand why they hide the upcoming lesson types now

Post image
270 Upvotes

I always like seeing what lessons are coming up ahead…Sometimes I’ll even push myself a little bit on a given day to get to a story or the radio show because I really enjoy those lessons. I don’t understand the pedagogy behind this decision to hide upcoming lessons. I don’t see a value add here.

... it's where I learn to say the most important statements which truly matter.

(Btw, the way this is structured, the "too" means in addition to the women who like to shave their chest? Correct?)

Constructive Criticism There is literally 0 way to do vocab practise

Hi all,

I wont go all negative so I will start with good things first. I am studying Japanese on Duolingo since over a month now. I am super user and happy with where Duolingo brought my Japanese so far in a month.

I am now more familiar with the words and sentences when I hear one while watching an anime/movie or simply an instagram reels.

However there is a huge thing that holds me and slows me down on my progression which is there is no vocab practices available in the app.

I learn new words on every unit, sometimes up to 10-15 words. of course I write down and practice them however I would expect from my paid or unpaid language learning app to show me the words that though me so far (I believe this was a thing back then) or at least would have an “audio to flash card” practice like the one I have on unit/scenario section. But unfortunately there is none.

This strongly will keep me out of being a paid user soon. I tried external sites to show me the my vocab list but could find anything working so far.

I would be happy to hear your people thoughts and workarounds on this. Thank

Haven't gotten Lily's Fright Fest yet. Same thing happened with the Junior Toy Hunt, I got it first with 11 days remaining so I could only get 2 costumes :/

No update avaliable, have restarted the game and my device.

General Discussion Timer Boost price hike again!

Post image
• Upvotes

Timer boosts went up in price about a month ago or so. And as of this morning, I see there’s another huge price hike. The new prices seem awfully steep, I hope we start seeming more generous gem rewards than 5 - 9 here & there to offset this jump.

I use my gems to buy the timer boosts because no matter how hard I try, I am just not fast enough to finish the 3 star word matches.

Even waiting 30 seconds to see if an ‘x’ comes up, nothing. I just have to close the app entirely to get rid of this page. Annoying

General Discussion Freeze Streak

• Upvotes

Hello DuoGods, I am currently conscripted in the army and will be going on my basic military training field camp that lasts 5 days, and I’m not allowed to bring my cellphone. Just posting this here to try my luck, to see if my short streak can be resuscitated 🥴 Dont think my wallet is healthy enough to splurge on a 7-day freeze streak >.<

Bug? Disappearing bonuses

Just about every day I do my 3 chests. The third one is always 10 minutes off triple points the next day. In the past week I've gotten all 3 chests 6 times. There of those times I didn't get the bonus the next day.

What the hell.

Has anyone else seen that problem? Anyone know a fix? If I report a bug all I get is an ai response saying: sorry to hear that, we've submitted a bug report.

I can't be the only one

Constructive Criticism Bot Account

Post image
6 Upvotes

Longish story - my daughter got an account suggested to her (from her phone contacts) as being me. It's not me, but has my exact full name from the email address I used to join duolingo. I thought that was a bit suspicious so I looked up that user via add a friend. The profile has zero followers and is following only one user. I looked up that user (screenshot). Looking at other users who are also following this 'super' user, many of them are the same, right down to the language and xp, and only following this one account.

I reported this account but who knows what that will achieve. I guess I was just concerned that some AI has created a fake user using my details.
