I don't know what to post this under, but I started thinking this after purchasing a pack of Double A batteries recently. Naturally, it got me thinking and maybe I wouldn't have felt this way if I had kept my job at the Dollar Tree that I worked at.
For clarification, I'm on the autism spectrum (I have been ever since I was 13 or 14) and I was first hired for my job at Dollar Tree back in fall of 2020 after I was let go from my previous job at Goodwill because of the pandemic. I basically worked there for five years, but there were a few hiccups, the main one being in the summer of 2021. Basically, I was working on a U-Boat when I heard a customer yelling at one of my co-workers in the next aisle. I went over and asked what the problem was and both my co-worker and the customer told me what was going on. It turns out my co-worker asked the customer (who was black, by the way. And furthermore, I'm black, so it has nothing to do with race) if he needed any assistance and the customer went off on him because he believed it was racial profiling. After hearing both sides, I realized what was going on and told the customer that my co-worker was doing his job and asking if he needed assistance, after which the man stormed out of the store.
You'd think that would be the end of that, but no. A few hours later, the man came back into the store holding a Marshall's bag and gestured towards me. He then started yelling at me and shaking the Marshall's bag in my face, and all because I told him that my co-worker was just asking if he needed any assistance. He then ran out of the store, leaving me there scared and upset to the point that I started crying and my supervisor at the time let me go to the backroom in order to calm down.
Now here's something else, when I first started working at Dollar Tree, I had a dream to become a YouTuber, however I feel like I wasn't as good as every other YouTuber out there, so I constantly went over different countdowns and such to make sure they were absolutely perfect (I'm was sort of a perfectionist - I've gotten over it, so to speak, and I did this before I got the job at Dollar Tree), so I was going over and perfecting a few countdowns when the incident between the customer and my co-worker happened. The customer was banned from the store after that and I basically said I was fine, but as it turned out it affected me worse than I thought. For a while, I treated customers with hostility, but afterwards (largely because I didn't want to lose my job), and I reacted with fear, constantly apologizing for being myself because I believed after the incident with that customer, I believed that following my dream of being a YouTuber and being myself was letting the customers down as long as I was working there.
Of course, as time went on and while those that were my supervisors said that I was a hard worker, my hours were slowly getting cut; to the point that I was lucky to get a day of work either every week or at the most every month. This went until last June, when I clocked into work that day, I got the notified by corporate that I was terminated from my job. Granted, as of recently, I have my own small YouTube channel (a channel I greatly enjoy making) and I started posting a fanfiction on AO3, but things are not doing so well financially and I recently feel useless, like maybe my life is not worth anything because I'm not dedicating my entire life to the Dollar Tree brand.
I'm sorry that this post is so long, but I couldn't help feeling worthless because of this. And all of this is because I needed Double A batteries.
