Genetics/DNA We're Embark: AMA about our new Mast Cell Tumor Risk Score, now available for all dogs!

Hi all!

We're Embark's science and vet team, and we're here to talk about something we've been working on for a while: our updated Mast Cell Tumor (MCT) risk score.

What's new: Our previous MCT risk assessment could only flag elevated risk, and only for dogs with certain breed backgrounds. Now every dog with a Breed + Health test gets a percentage risk score plus a designation — below-average, average, or elevated. These new results can be found under "Genetic Risk Scores" in your dog's health results.

Why this matters: Mast cell tumors are the most common malignant skin tumor in dogs. The good news? They're also one of the most treatable: more than 80% can be cured with surgery alone when caught early. The hard part has always been knowing which dogs to watch more closely. That's what this score is for.

How it works: Instead of looking at one gene, we built a polygenic risk score that combines signals from hundreds of genetic markers along with breed ancestry and sex to estimate your dog's individual inherited risk. To be clear, the risk score is not a diagnosis: it won't tell you your dog will get an MCT. But it tells you whether your dog's genetics puts them at higher, lower, or average risk compared to dogs generally, and that may change how you and your vet might approach monitoring.

What you can do with it: The single most important step — especially for dogs at elevated risk — is regular body checks. Run your hands over your dog, feel for new lumps, keep tabs on old ones. Your dog will think it's just really good petting. If you spot something new or changing, that's your cue to call the vet.

Here today: (proof)

  • Brett Ford, MS, Senior Scientist in Applied Science
  • Taki Kawakami, PhD, Principal Scientist in Computational Biology

We'll be live from 12:30–3 PM ET and checking back tomorrow and Wednesday for anything we miss. No question too basic or too technical — ask us anything. We'll sign our answers so you know who's talking.

EDIT: Thanks all for the questions! We're signing off for today but we'll be checking back in over the next day or two -- so feel free to drop a question if you came late.

Update 4/16: Correcting something from earlier — the updated MCT Risk score is available for dogs tested from March 2026 onward, not for all dogs tested since the original May 2023 model launched. Dogs with scores under the original model will still see those results. Sorry for the mix-up, and we've edited the affected responses below.

I had an inkling but was still shocked to see these results! He is the absolute sweetest little guy, very affectionate but still independent. He was found as a stray in Queens, and we met him at an adoption event early this month and immediately knew we had to bring him home! Assumed he was a chi mix and maybe part fruit bat.

He's a compact 20lb and estimated to be about 9. Sweetest guy ever. Mostly deaf. Doesn't care about our cats and could take or leave other dogs, but loves people and social situations. Naps hard but acts like a puppy when it's time for a walk. Super affectionate but sometimes prefers to sleep in a different room. The best of everything.

We were expecting Pittie and some other primary/dominant mix, but seems like she’s mostly Pittie! Doesn’t matter either way, we love her all the same.

My main attractor to the DNA test was for health and relatives. We got her from a shelter, so it would have been so cool to find a sibling so we could potentially learn more about her litter. Closest match we have so far is 19% shared DNA, so hoping for a close relative to come in the picture soon!

We adopted our Belgian Malinois pup from a rescue who saved her and her siblings off the streets of Texas. We see her first sibling got adopted who is in the right of the results. We’ve always been curious about her dna results as she has her white collar and socks. Her other siblings don’t have much white at all besides their chests.

I’m very surprised about the Pitbull and Akita. We’ve had a few people guess Akita before, but most people can tell that her head and body is Malinois. We’ve had a feeling about the GSD though because her face kind of looks like an old
Man at times haha. (Pics are from when we first got her around 4 months old to now)

Meet Willow! My cute lil shelter pup. She was 35.4 lbs when I got her on 10/1. She’s currently 47.5 🫠 pictures are in order from our first interaction. She’s 5 months old & just lost the rest of her baby teeth. Naturally I saved them in a bag lmao. Any guesses on what she is? I did an embark breed & health test.

Edit: some add’l info is her tail is sooooo long guys like I mean 15.5 inches long!

This is our little Evie! We adopted her from a rescue 3 weeks ago. She’s around 2 years old and very very sweet and chill. She’s eager to be involved and is super affectionate. I was able to guess her top 3 breeds! She’s quite small at 12lbs.

We adopted this 3.5 year old, 21 pound male dog from a rescue agency in Indiana, PA through a listing on Petfinder. Based on his Embark family results listed (mother, brother, sister and daughter), I’m thinking probably a BYB. Thankfully, his COI is only 1%. He’s very smart and pure chaos monster, but we (including his dog siblings) love him dearly. Welcome to the family little Murray!

Her super mutt is: poodle, beagle, and staffy. Laika is 1 year old and 28 lbs. The Yorkie and Jack Russell Terrier are pulling their weight. She has no poker face... mostly because her ears convey every emotion very clearly.

30.5% American Pitbull Terrier

25.9% Australian Cattle Dog

13% Russel-type Terrier

12.5% Australiam Shepherd

12.5% Supermutt (Poodle, Beagle, Staffy)

5.6% Yorkshire Terrier

We were definitely expecting pit bull as he’s from the shelter in the southern us but we weren’t expecting that percentage and we thought those ears and endless stamina meant herding breed. We were so wrong, but he’s 100% good boy!
