This has to be one of the most grotesque things I’ve seen in a while. From what I understand it was more of a genocide and less of a “civil war.” I hope the victims are in a better place now.

u/zukeinni98 Apr 21 '21

Unfortunately when people stand up against ethnic cleansing and genocide, the perpetrators label them as terrorists and rebels and rewrite history in a way that makes it look like what they did was completely justifiable.

u/LetLoveInspire Apr 21 '21

Literally the narrative right now Israel is trying to create with the Palestinians. Oh no they're "terrorists" its okay to starve them and deny them equal medical treatment and living standards. Oh and steal they're land.

72

u/tabman16 Apr 21 '21

100%. It's one thing to believe in your right for statehood in a hostile land (that they forced themselves into). But then to turn around and ethnically cleanse and practically enact genocide upon the native Palestinians is grotesque.

Not to mention the dozens of war crimes they've committed and enacted domestically and abroad

61

u/LetLoveInspire Apr 21 '21

Thank you so much for saying this fam. I get dowvoted all the time and insecure about supporting the cause and its fucked up so much of EU and USA are brainwashed. The entire conservative Christian population thinks Israel is some hero trampling a beast when in reality their the absolute evil that are trying for genocide of the Palestinians. Zionisms among the most vile things.

Also free Yemen while we're calling out oppressors fuck the Saudi royal fam.

34

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

I hate it when people say "but they hate Israel" as if it justifies the treatment of Palestinians. First off, it's not like every single Palestinian hates all Israelis. Secondly, it's bullshit logic that reverses cause and effect. They act like Palestinians just started lashing out over nothing and were oppressed in a well-intentioned effort to make Israel secure.

6

u/LetLoveInspire Apr 21 '21

EXACTLY. Thank u .

u/LetLoveInspire Apr 21 '21 edited Apr 21 '21

Like you would put people in a massive concrete cage while constantly attacking and spitting on them whilst stealing their wealth and land and homes? Kinda sounds like what the Germans wanted for the jews tbh and I'm not even reaching for that. Hitler was a scum bag fuck who wanted to eliminate diff types of ppl.

Isreal and Saudi are literally trying to eliminate a specific type of people. China is trying to eliminate a specific type of people.

You just blew my fucking mind... they are so covertly trying to infest Every facet of every society and culture to brainwash the world into thinking Israel is a necessity and the Palestinians need to be erased to do so. Can't believe I've never heard of this appreciate you spreading knowledge fam.

u/king_lloyd11 Apr 21 '21 edited Apr 21 '21

It's not just the perpetrators. The state may have dubbed them terrorists, but the world took that at face value and still does little to acknowledge the atrocities committed by the other side.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '21

But the LTTE are terrorists.

They have used Tamil civilians as human shields, used live animals to test bombs, kidnapped Tamil civilians and forced them to join, recruited child soldiers, invented the suicide vest, invaded villages and killed civilians living there, bombed religious places like temples and mosques, bombed places where civilians resided (like hotels), bombed buses, massacred people in temples, killed Indian prime minister Rajiv Ghandi, guilty of ethnic cleansing, etc...

2

u/king_lloyd11 Oct 22 '21

And the Sinhalese army has done much of the same. Only difference is that they're sponsored by the powers that be.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '21

Well the Tamil Tigers were one of the first organizations to use suicide bombings as a terrorist weapon. Other organizations in Pakistan and the middle East started using it after them. I understand they were fighting for something but shit there is evil on both sides.

11

u/zukeinni98 Apr 22 '21

Now take into account how desperate and delusional these ppl were that they were willing to blow themselves up if it meant harming the enemy. If they killed soldiers it's fair game, innocent civilians ofc is just pure terrorism.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '21

They killed innocent Singhalese people more often I believe. Regardless, I feel the pain on both sides and genocide is just wrong.

-1

u/bonfire_inThecoast Apr 22 '21

Every country where muslims are a minority there is always problems with terrorism.

Call it what you want but they are always problematic

4

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '21

Nobody was asked to become a suicide bomber, mostly girls opted to become one. They used to ask to be a bomber because death and taking out an enemy was better than living such a life. I dont expect others to get this concept.

Do you understand most of the Tamils live in Colombo with other communities even during the war? And Indian army kill so many Tamils in north ?

27

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

What are you saying?

What do you mean most of the Tamils in Colombo??? How many sinhalese were dying there?? How many????

-31

u/buddhist-truth Apr 21 '21

It wasnt targeted on tamils, Tamils live in other parts of the country as well and never got harmed.

33

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

That elderly person with long beard who looked like a temple pujari... he is a tamilian. All those voices asking them not to leave??. Tamil. That part where the baby was crying and a woman said what will a video of this ever do? Come and hide. They are killing everyone... that's a Tamil woman. I didn't watch the rest because I dont wanna get more fucked up. And me?? I'm a Tamilian too. I have seen this. With my own eyes. I have experienced this. I have walked walked and walked. Moved to temples and churches so the army will not kill us. I was no ltte. No food for days. Nothing. Just happy we didnt die that day. Stop your lies. I have seen shit worse than what's shown in those videos. So just stop.

u/Garuda_of_hope Apr 22 '21

Those who managed to survive and come to India(especially to my state) we welcomed by the people. I know a lot of personal friends, family friends who found a respectable life here. You can even see lot of war immigrants become top tier professors, scientists, politicians etc. Some of them also found a good life by escaping to Australia.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '21

I am one of them. Thank you.

3

u/Garuda_of_hope Apr 22 '21

take my virtual hug Power to you! Remember you have a community that cares for you so don't feel lost or alone.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '21

Thanks and yes I know this. I studied in chennai, tons of friends from there and most of them befriended me because of my Tamil, really great friends. Although at the very beginning I struggled to fit in.

0

u/stadenerino Jul 18 '21

It was both, really. Tamils =/= LTTE = terrorists

80

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

36

u/Prosthemadera Apr 21 '21

Yeah I think I'll skip this one.

46

u/awebig Apr 21 '21

Imagine how the people who lived through it felt...

-59

u/buddhist-truth Apr 21 '21

Terrorist were bombing banks, schools, religious places every day .. we lived in absolute fear

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_attacks_attributed_to_the_LTTE

43

u/alistahr Apr 21 '21

Those children I saw in this aren't terrorists.

-73

u/buddhist-truth Apr 21 '21

How about the children from other communities , its ok to kill them ? this is some terrorist logic.

48

u/UlagamOruvannuka Apr 21 '21

The government protected you because you were Sinhalese. It killed its own citizens who were Tamil.

2

u/beaconator2000 Apr 22 '21

Sounds similar to Rwanda in the 1990s.

22

u/nefariousmonkey Apr 22 '21

The fuck. This will haunt me forever. The fuck. Fuck me. Fuck everything. There is no god. Wtf.

u/Geodude-Engineer Apr 22 '21 edited Apr 22 '21

Don't let it effect you too much. Understand nature and the universe can be brutal and beautiful at the same time. The duality means we can find purpose in this chaos.

EDIT: People are choosing to misinterpret what im saying like I caused this fucking genocide. Fine be angry towards me if that help you sleep at night. Fuck yall.

19

u/nefariousmonkey Apr 22 '21

There is nothing natural or beautiful about this

10

u/Garuda_of_hope Apr 22 '21

Genocide of my people isn't anything beautiful you fucker.

u/ribosoOmbogo Apr 22 '21

Good thing I read this before, gonna have to pass on watching then.

59

u/alistahr Apr 21 '21

Goddamn, these people are fucking disgusting. And when I say these people, I mean the military and the people who command them. All of them.

-31

u/buddhist-truth Apr 21 '21

Indian army killed so many Tamils

11

u/TheDarkClaw Apr 21 '21

Aren't Tamils closer to Indians (in terms of religion) than they are to Sri Lankans?

24

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

The Tamil are generally hindu, yes

The Sri Lankan government in this scenario are the Sinhalese, who are generally Buddhist

2

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '21

There’s even a Tamil majority state in India (Tamil Nadu). However, Indians aren’t ethnically or racially homogeneous. Tamils are ethnically related to other Dravidian ethnic groups found in South India, however if you compare them to a North Indian, there are differences both in culture, language, society, ethnicity, interpretations of Hinduism, etc.

29

u/UlagamOruvannuka Apr 21 '21

Unfortunately IPKF did commit horrible acts. But they were quickly removed and India did not participate ever since. How is this even a reply to the Sri Lankan establishment commiting a genocide against their own citizens because of their ethnicity?

-17

u/buddhist-truth Apr 21 '21

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaffna_hospital_massacre

when Indian army doing it its not genocide ... nice logic.

30

u/UlagamOruvannuka Apr 21 '21

Holy. The IPKF attempted genocide in SRI lanka and thank god they were stopped.

Now you go with the Sri Lankan Army ...

4

u/chiefexecutiveballer Apr 22 '21

It's genocide no matter who does it. One party was stopped rapidly. The other party was actively encouraged.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

2

u/buddhist-truth Apr 21 '21

The Jaffna hospital massacre occurred on October 21 and 22, 1987, during the Sri Lankan Civil War, when troops of the Indian Peace Keeping Force entered the premises of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, an island nation in South Asia, and killed between 60–70 patients and staff.[4]

13

u/cunningstunt6899 Apr 21 '21

When has the Indian army killed Tamils? Why are you spamming this all over this thread?

14

u/throwawayforrealsie Apr 22 '21

They’re a troll. If you know anything about the conflict and look at the username, it all makes sense. They came on this thread to victim-blame an entire ethnic group for a genocide, because that’s easier than accepting that they might have supported something unimaginably evil. Pretty standard stuff, nbd, downvote, ignore, move along

52

u/el_horsto Apr 21 '21

I'm not in the right mindset to watch the documentary right now, but if it's about what I think it is about, then:
I'm pretty sure the guy in charge of the operation at the time was elected president in 2019.

Fun little story, on my flight back from Sri Lanka around that time, I talked to a guy while waiting for our connecting flight and he said: "yeah, some people don't like him, but it's just because he is tough. Like Hitler".

I did not know how to react to that.

14

u/alistahr Apr 21 '21

Holy shit. My way of reacting to that would've been to gtfo as soon as possible, so don't blame you. But yeah I dont think there is a right mindset to have to watch it, you'll feel like shit regardless. So fair warning.

16

u/king_lloyd11 Apr 21 '21

In his defense, Rajapaksa doesn't hold a candle to Hitler, but the fact that he is a current world leader and that they can be mentioned in the same conversation easily is telling enough.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '21

Or Rajapaksha was/is not running a country that could be counted as as powerful as Germany before WW2.

-23

u/sonofthenation Apr 21 '21

It was the uneducated used to kill the educated and people wearing glasses.

22

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

I believe you are thinking of Cambodia.

8

u/sonofthenation Apr 21 '21

Yes. Wrong conflict.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

No worries.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

4

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

Maybe now you understand how the holocaust happened.

-14

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

Maybe now? I understood how it happened when I read it in a book during school like 30 years ago.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

But for some reason, we again know this is going on, but we aren't doing anything about it.

This statement makes me think otherwise. If you understood how it happened, you wouldn't be asking why we aren't doing anything about it. It's not like we can do much about it without starting an enormous war.

-4

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

I understood the Holocaust.

What is happening in Sri Lanka and China are all different. How can you even try to compare those? Are we even talking about the same thing?

52

u/_Mechaloth_ Apr 21 '21 edited Apr 21 '21

"This is nothing compared..."

Way to diminutize this deplorable event in Sri Lankan history. There's no "first place" in tragedy.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

-37

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

Only you would think about awarding prizes (“first place”???) to any of this. Don’t put your idiotic thoughts and pass them off as mine. Way to shit all over what I was saying and twist it.

15

u/_Mechaloth_ Apr 21 '21

Fuck off. If you can't see that saying "this is nothing" to a massacre is probably a bad way to draw attention to tragedies happening elsewhere, then you're wasting all of our time.

11

u/alistahr Apr 21 '21

You just did that. "This is nothing" is the dumbest thing to say to help your argument.

15

u/GraDoN Apr 21 '21

How does one get this ignorant on the cause they wish to shed light on?

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

Are you a cia bot

3

u/Garuda_of_hope Apr 22 '21

'This is nothing compared' Fuck you from the bottom of my heart.

57

u/stizzi2 Apr 21 '21

The most underrated documentary ever. Of course the Sri Lankan government can act with impunity when it has China installing military outposts for global strategic positions in return for $$$$ to commit genocide

19

u/Avocadoispronto Apr 21 '21

The news anchor😔😔😞

23

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

She was raped and murdered, right?

14

u/thotinator69 Apr 21 '21

Yeah there is an additional documentary that talks more about it

5

Yes. There are photos of it and others too.

I'm not sure about this, idk if that happened to her but I have heard such and worse things were done to other girls. This was why many of the suicide bombers were girls and many youngsters joined ltte

But yes, her video was released as a warning. That's why they did, so others won't fight back.i mean these guys used to throw tires on top of people when they are alive and burn them.

Apparently it would be her 39th birthday this week according to an article I saw

68

u/amador9 Apr 21 '21

The events at the end of Sri Lanka Civil War definitely need to be exposed. Thousands of surrendering combatants as well as fleeing civilians were butchered. This was certainly a war crime but the extent of it has been covered up. This is hardly the first Civil War that has resulted in atrocities.

The Civil War itself was a lot more complex. Sri Lanka was granted independence by the U.K. with a Democratic framework (ie Majority Rule) after years of Colonial “ divide and conquer” Administration. Like so many countries in Africa and Asia after the end of Colonialism or Eastern Block countries after the end of the Soviet Union, there were serious ethnic conflicts that had to be resolved before these countries could function as independent countries. In Sri Lanka, this situation resulted in a Civil War.

17

u/RotANobot Apr 21 '21

Thanks for the background info. It would be great if this part of modern history was more commonplace in high school curriculums.

1

u/nixt26 Apr 22 '21

Pakistan, India and Bangladesh is another great example

69

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21 edited Apr 21 '21

I remember when it was happening and MIA was doing everything she could to shed light on the atrocities. She went on Bill Maher who accused her of being an ignorant shill for terrorists. Funny how American conservatives always flock to the defense of whatever military is trying to quietly commit genocide in someone else's country. EDIT - I guess Maher is a liberal? Sorry.

1

u/mrfudface Apr 21 '21

I wouldn't be suprised. What is his view on US Soldiers? Does he "Thank you for your service" those guys, that also clearly commit War Crimes?

18

u/DrewDotson7 Apr 21 '21

Bill Maher is far from a Conservative

26

u/joshuatx Apr 21 '21

He's not leftist either.

3

u/IslandDoggo Apr 22 '21

17

-12

u/buddhist-truth Apr 21 '21

MIA Funded the terrorist groups and that used to kill babies in other communities.

52

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

Bill Maher is actually a liberal, and also a gigantic asshole

34

u/Uncle_Daddy_Kane Apr 21 '21

He's a smarmy cockfaced douchebag first. His liberalism is just what's allowed him to keep doing his shitty show that for some godless reason hasn't been canceled

1

u/censorinus Apr 22 '21

I believe he only claims to be a liberal. Look at what they do, not what they claim to be. Without knowing who he is you could put him on Fox News or OAN and he would fit in just fine. And he's good friends with Ann Coulter! I would bet they have a lot of interesting bedtime conversations...

5

u/joshuatx Apr 22 '21

He's def a posterchild for r/ENLIGHTENEDCENTRISM - he was pretty anti-Bush and liberal and got backlash but since Obama and Trump he's slipped into a really privileged, out of touch and irrelevant old boomer who happens to lean liberal on social issues.

-1

u/RajReddy806 Apr 22 '21

Any group that uses child soldiers is a Terrorist group. Bill Maher was correct when he said that LTTE was a terrorist group. One need not be liberal to say so, one just needs to be intelligent to understand that bringing children in to war is a strict no-no.

I think that one cannot understand the whole story just by watching a 50 minute documentary. The documentary which does not talk about the view point from both sides.

Other than China, western countries such as Britain and some Scandinavian countries were also involved in the war.

2

u/Arkeros Apr 22 '21

How does the use of child soldiers equate to terrorism?

26

-31

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '21

38

u/the_real_MSU_is_us Apr 22 '21

No, not "no doubt" lol

Money. Political power. Resources. land. Ego. Racism All of these have been causes of war.

Religion can cause tensions, and it can be twisted to help drum up support for war among the masses. But it isn't the "creator" of war in the vast majority of cases.

For example, it wasn't why ww1 happened, or ww2, or Korea, or Vietnam, of the Gulf war, or what Russia is doing in Ukraine, or what China keeps doing to its neighbors, but you can say Islam creating extremists caused Iraq/Afghanistan if you want too.

24

u/MachiavellianKarp Apr 22 '21

Nope. Originally stoked by colonial meddling and mismanagement that escalated into ethnic tensions, further fuelled by postcolonial elites with megalomaniacal agendas. The only "no doubt" is that innocents and civilians suffered immensely...
