How to Dieselpunk the Steppe?

Working on a setting based around "What if the Khazarian Khaganate was still kicking in 1920+" and I'm having trouble with the architecture.
So far I've used rural Dagestan as a reference: Old stone brick homes built into the hills and mountains overlooking the plains, with some yurts here or there to represent the migratory turkic roots.
The question is, how do you dieselpunk this? I love the visuals in this genre of new technolgoy overwhelming traditional structures. How might this look given the setting and culture?
