Discussion Catastrophism in evolutionary theory

• Upvotes

Uniformism- the idea that everything only changes slowly in microscopic bits and pieces into a new form.

Catastrophism- the idea of sudden and random events offering what seems like massive changes.

This new theory is a recent development and most mainstream scientists depend upon the slow change theory. It requires integrating non- biology theories into the field of biology. There are theories within mathematics which are now invading many other fields and offering perspectives which open up the field.

The problem tends to be caused because biologists simply do not include mathematics as part of their background so they cant quite understand this new way of seeing things.

It's Crocoduck Time!

The Golden Crocoduck Awards have been posted for this year. The criteria for the award is quite strict: not just a bad argument, but a 100% verifiably false claim by a young-earth creationist. It is named after Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron's laughably bad 2007 anti-evolution argument, the claim that evolution should have produced a "crocoduck" animal hybrid complete with a terribly done photoshop image of a duck with a crocodile's head.

The finalists were:

  • Kyle Butt (yes, that's his real name) - for claiming that "the most fundamental law of science is the law of cause and effect."
  • Brian Thomas, a member of the Institute for Creation Research who claims to have somehow received a PhD in "Paleobiochemistry" from... a school of electrical engineering, electronics, and computer science in Liverpool... and who claimed that gully erosion could "only" occur at catastrophic mudflow sites.

The winner is Brian Thomas, and I bet Mr. Butt will be relieved to only be runner-up and the butt of slightly less derision thereby.
