Spoiler no name for the android?

Just finished the show for the first time. Overall I like it and I'm bummed out it got cancelled (and yes, I see the follow up in the sidebar. will get to it :))

It bugs me nobody decided to call the android by its rightful name: Seven.

I just wanted to complain. :P Thanks for reading.

I think that was done because she wasn't an actual human. When the first six woke up, they chose the numbers as their names since they didn't remember what their actual names were. After the Android attacked them as part of the security protocol, they got her shut down and got her to sick bay to scan her where Three said, "What's up with the robot?" Two said, "Technically, she's an Android." At that point, that's all she was to them: An Android.

That established the fact that she is not actually human and isn't viewed as a human. Since they don't view her as human, they don't consider her "one of them" so they refer to her as what she is instead of humanizing her. It probably wasn't a conscious decision or given any thought. They just viewed her as machinery. They eventually got to a point where they let her give herself a name, but that was a much later point in time after going through so much shit together.

I suppose, to them, it would have been the equivalent of naming your Roomba. Like, sure, you can do it to be cute, but at the end of the day, it's a machine. Of course, an android is designed to look and act human and, it turns out, can have personality and emotions, so it's much less of a stretch of the imagination to think of an android as a "person." But, apparently, prejudices against androids ran so deep they persisted even after the crew's memories were wiped. That or it's instinctive to classify anything non-human as not a "person."

To be fair, they were all probably ignorant assholes in their original lives and didn't car if the Android had a name. Some of that may have carried over when their memories were wiped, but I'd put it as more of what you said about naming your roomba.

She would have been compared to Seven of Nine had Android's name been Seven.

Don't know if you know but Data (Brent Spiner) gave Zoie Palmer props on her performance. I think it was an IG post or something.

Great show though. Wish we got proper conclusion.

It would have been very odd if she was named Seven. Given the other character names, Android was suitably fitting and impersonal.

instead of Seven I think Zero would have been more apt given she's an android which is just a series of Zeroes and Ones and One was taken

According to Dark Matter’s fandom pages, Nyx apparently means zero already (I think in German, but I’m no sure), so they probably wouldn’t have wanted 2 zeroes…

Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one that thought that. On my first time watching I was just waiting for the moment there’d be one of those scenes where she’s like, “I’m just an android,” and they humanize her in response. Giving her the name Seven… but it’s fine, I mean, then that’d start raising questions about new members and renaming them to numbers like Nyx or Devon.
