Gaming Time Management

I’m 32 years old. Wife & 4 kids. Lately I’ve wanted to spend any spare time I have gaming. I truly enjoy it, and it gives me an escape. It also keeps me from going out and getting myself into trouble on the weekends. Both my PS5 & laptop are in our bedroom (which the wife prefers) so I’m not isolated in a separate room all the time.

But, I don’t know how much is too much... I am the provider for my family, I’m blessed to make enough for my wife to stay home & the kids to have what they need. But I know that isn’t always enough. I have an addictive personality and tend to obsess over things/achievements which video games can obviously tap into.

I’m curious how any of you guys with families manage your time between work/life/hobby(gaming) if you have dedicated time slots or a system to keep you from using all your spare time on it.

I know right now I’m spending too much time gaming (or I think I am), but sometimes I just feel spread thin across all my other obligations/responsibilities that this seems to be the gel keeping me together where I can “let my hair down a bit” if you know what I’m saying.

Let me know your thoughts and how you manage it in your households.

Any fellow gamer dads looking for a regular squad?

What’s up, everyone!

I’m 30, married, a dad, and looking for some fellow gamer dads to squad up with on PC.

Between work, family, and dad life, finding time to game isn’t always easy. I’m a firefighter, so my schedule can be pretty unpredictable. Most nights, I’m lucky to get an hour or so to hop on and play.

I’m definitely more of a casual gamer these days. I’m not looking to grind ranked matches for six hours or take everything super seriously. Just want to hop on, play some games, have a few laughs, and unwind.

Also, I can’t always use my mic. Sometimes the kids are sleeping, the house is busy, or I’m just trying to get a little quiet gaming time in. So it’d be cool to find people who don’t mind playing without constant voice chat.

A little about me:

I’m in Texas (Central Time).

I play on PC.

I’m into shooters, co-op, survival games, and pretty much anything that’s fun with a group.

I’m usually playing in shorter sessions, around an hour or so.

I’m always down to try new games.

I’m big into building PCs and messing with hardware.

I’m really just looking for a laid-back group of dads who understand that family comes first. No pressure to be online every night, no getting upset when someone has to hop off suddenly, and no expectations of being amazing at every game.

It’d be cool to eventually have a little Discord group where we can see who’s online, squad up when schedules line up, and just enjoy gaming again.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, drop a comment or shoot me a DM!

Dad duties first, gaming when we can. 😂

Games For 5 Year Old This Xmas

I'M FINALLY at the stage where I can really get my first born into gaming. He's 5, been playing a little while and starting tonget the hang of platforming/3d movement.

We've played Mario Galaxy, Mario Odysey Captain Toad, Luigi's Mansion 3, Mario Wonder and astro bot together. I want to get him a game this christmas that he'll love and we can play together so he has that, "I remember getting x for christmas and playing through with my dad "

What suggestions do people have of what to get? He's 5 and full of energy! He's a lot luckier than I was as I have most systems, (not a switch 2 though) and 2.4k games (yes I never gew up) but I want him tobhave that feeling the game is his.

He is getting better but having things like the non death characters and him beongbthe cap while aim mario still does help.

Busy gamers and parents: What's your BIGGEST challenge finding time to game?

Hey, fellow gamers!

I'm a dad who loves RPGs and story-driven games. Between work, family, and everyday responsibilities, finding time to enjoy gaming can be challenging.

I'm curious how other busy gamers handle this.

What's your biggest obstacle to gaming more often?

Bonus question for the comments:

When do you usually find time to game early mornings, late nights, or weekends? And how many hours do you get each week?

I'm interested in learning how everyone balances gaming with real life.

After all, real life has side quests too!

Crimson desert vs dune awakening

I am awaiting GTA VI and wanted to play something while waiting. I have 3 kids so minimal time to play, usually after everyone asleep for an hour or two. I have Dune Awakening through game pass and have played a bit. I like it but am not huge into survival-ish games like this. I have wanted to play crimson desert since it released but not sure it’s worth buying it for 70$ when GTA comes out in a month. This is on Xbox btw. What do you all think?

Looking for games on Ally X

Hey all,

I just recently bought a Rog Ally X and am looking for gaming suggestions. I come from mainly PC gaming (Battlefield 6, WoW, Rust, Tarkov, Wardogs, etc). I was playing WoW Forever on it which is fun, but I’m looking to broaden my horizon. I’m not much of a single player game guy, but I want something that I can pick up and put down when the baby is napping. My friend recommended Witcher 3. Any games you would suggest for someone looking into single player games for the first time?

Dads who organize game nights: how do you figure out who's free? (I'm building something, want honest feedback)

Hey dads. I'm one of you: I used to play games basically every night right after dinner untill midnight or even later. Since I have kids it has changed quite often. In the early stages I wouldn't game much because I couldn't sleep much but when the oldest one for older I got 2-3 night for myself. Now with my second child we are back in the barely stage while most of my friends don't have kids and can play quite a bit more. Our group's weekly "who's in tonight?" turned into a mess of chat messages and "maybe, got some things to do".

Or sometimes even I had time and hopped on and everyone was already done with gaming and just started to log off after playing all afternoon. And sometimes we messed up timezones.

So I'm building a small free tool. You add your usual evenings once, change a single day when life happens, and see which friends are free, in your own timezone. No events or RSVPs, just "who's free". I'm the maker, and it's built with AI help. I am a seasoned developer with 12+ years of experience but don't have time to build everything by hand so AI helped me and I reviewed every bit of it.

I'm not sharing a link yet. I'd like to know if this is even a real problem first. And I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share it here, but DM me if you are interested or I'll share when I know it's allowed and people are interested.

What do you do now (group chat, poll, calendar)? And what would make a tool like this useless for your group?

A cozy lawn mowing game where your kid grows up between summers

Hey everyone! I'm a solo dev and a dad of 3 young kids. 18 Summers is a first person lawn mowing game. Each level is one summer in the same backyard. Between summers your kid gets older.

Mowing finishes patches of the yard and brings back memories and toys from that year. The goal was to make something satisfying to play that also shows how fleeting time can be with your kids.

The Steam page just went live about a week ago. I'd love any feedback!

Game name is 18 Summers

(Someone from IndieDev reddit recommended I share this over here after getting a lot of positive feedback)

Call of Duty Looking to Build a Parent Task Force - MW4

Any other parents looking for a laid-back group to squad up with in MW4?
I’m looking to put together a Parent Task Force for those of us who enjoy gaming but have kids, jobs, and real-life responsibilities. No pressure to be online every night, no raging over a bad match, and no getting upset when someone has to step away because their kid needs something.
Just good games, some laughs, and teammates who understand that “one more match” depends on whether the kids stay asleep. 😂
All skill levels welcome. Whether you get on after bedtime or squeeze in a few matches when you can, the goal is to find a regular crew that gets it.
Drop your platform and usual play times below if you’re interested. Let’s get a squad together!
DM me for More Info. Must have Discord an a Mic to Join

Best Swords in Gaming???

I'm compiling a list for "30 Something Gamers" and we are talking about the best swordplay in games and I'm going to do a section on the best/ most iconic/ most bad ass swords ever in gaming.

Anyone got any suggestions I have to include?

Also, do we class the keyblade as a sword?

First Time Dad Going Straight Into NG+3

I love video games, especially Soulslikes, and my wife and I are expecting our first children next month. Except we're not having just one. We're having TRIPLETS! We're super excited, and I've been nesting like crazy getting the nursery and the house ready for the babies.

When I'm not working or getting stuff ready for the little ones, I'm usually gaming on my PC. I normally play in the evenings and sometimes stay up until midnight or 1 AM, then get up at 7 AM for work. I'm starting to wonder how long that's going to last once we have three newborns in the house.

I've even been looking at getting a handheld, specifically the OneXPlayer 3, since I figure it might be something that comes in handy as a new dad.

So I'm curious about other gaming dads, especially anyone who's had twins, triplets, or multiple kids close in age. How much did your gaming time change after becoming a dad? Did you find ways to still get some gaming in, or did you pretty much have to put it on the back burner for a while?

Gaming is kind of my therapy, so I'd definitely like to keep it as part of my life if I can. I even have Universal Pause Button software for those Soulslikes that don't let you pause normally. But seriously, my family comes first, and I'm always going to prioritize my wife and kids, even with the little things that need to get done around the house.

I'm just trying to get a realistic idea of what to expect.

Any advice, experiences, or tips from fellow gaming dads would be appreciated!
