Interesting DNA differences between me and my brother
I find it really interesting how different DNA results can be even between siblings.
My brother and I have a pretty similar Galician/Portuguese component, which makes sense with what we know about our family. Our confirmed ancestry is basically Spanish, mainly Galician, with some Portuguese ancestry too.
But then there are some curious differences. In my case, I’ve consistently had a noticeable French component. It showed up on Ancestry, FTDNA and also on an old MyHeritage test I did many years ago. The interesting thing is that the latest AncestryDNA update is actually the first one where that French component disappeared.
Some people say it could just be genetic overlap between Galicia, northern Iberia and France, while others think it might come from a distant ancestor I simply don’t know about. My family comes from a very small village and tracing every branch of the family tree is extremely difficult, so I guess both possibilities are open.
My brother, on the other hand, doesn’t really get that French signal. Instead, he gets a small Levantine/Eastern Mediterranean component. There are old family rumours about possible distant Jewish ancestry, but that’s exactly what they are: village rumours, so I definitely wouldn’t treat them as evidence.
What makes it even funnier is that phenotypically I look much more Mediterranean, while my brother looks much more stereotypically European, yet his DNA results tend to show slightly more Eastern Mediterranean influence than mine.
Obviously ethnicity estimates should always be taken with a grain of salt, especially when we’re talking about small percentages. But I thought it was a nice example of how siblings can inherit noticeably different combinations of DNA even with the same parents.

Why I Show the Fit Score Next to G25 Percentages (Built-In Reference Example)
I built MYDNATLAS. These are actual screenshots from its Custom Model tool, using the built-in "Load example" coordinates. This is a reference-data demonstration, not my DNA or a customer's result. The QA sample name at the top is the account selector; the actual target is the Eastern_European_Hunter-Gatherer coordinate row in the input field.
The six sources are Western European Hunter Gatherer, Caucasus Hunter Gatherer, Ancient North Eurasian, Ancient Ancestral South Indian, Natufian Hunter Gatherer and Anatolia Neolithic Farmer.
For that source set, the displayed mixture is:
- Ancient North Eurasian: 73.7%
- Western European Hunter Gatherer: 25.1%
- Caucasus Hunter Gatherer: 1.2%
The fit is 9.68, labelled Fair. PC10 has the largest residual, shown as +/-4.38. In distance-ranking mode, Ancient North Eurasian is the closest single source at 14.94.
Those outputs answer different questions. The nearest single reference is not an ancestry percentage, and mixture weights depend on the sources supplied. A historical label on a fitted component is not proof of a particular genealogical ancestor. This is coordinate fitting, not qpAdm.
I want the interface to make the limitations as visible as the percentages. Which source changes would you test first for this example, and what would make the fit explanation more useful?
For anyone asking about access: MYDNATLAS has a separate $15 USD raw-DNA conversion service and analysis subscriptions from $29 USD/year. The entry plan currently includes one conversion and three existing-G25 imports per year. This example does not benchmark conversion accuracy or turnaround. Do North Africans derive most of their ancestry from prehistoric back-to-Africa migrations or from more recent invasions from Phoenicians,Greeks,Romans,Arabs,Turks, etc?

My DNA result was recently updated to 100% from Arab Peninsula. It was not like that before. I had some African origin before like 12% but that no longer the case apparently

If I have verified comprehensive research into my surname why does it conflict with AncestryDNA results?
It says I am like 70% English but most my family ancestry is from Scotland and Ireland according to both sides of my family. I also have slight native ancestry on both sides that isnt showing but gemini explained how black and native ancestry if far back enough sometimes doesnt show.
Should I get me and my bro and mom to switch to 23andme? Is it more accurate? I might be able to get my younger brother to take the test too but I do not want to convince him to take a bad test lol. So is switching to 23andme more accurate? My dad refuses to do DNA ancestry tests because he doesnt trust them with his dna or something like that but i look just like him other than him being bald but I started taking Minoxidil so I dont hopefully go bald like him.

My DNA Test as a Somali
TRANSLATION:
87.3% Somali
9.3% Ethiopian and Eritrean
3.4% East African(Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda).
I’m not that surprised of that I have Ethiopian and Eritrean but Jewish gene is something I’m very surprised and I did dig deeper and my ancestors whom is Ethiopian/Eritrean Jewish used to live in Trinidad from 1900-1950s. I’m from Mogadishu but my family is pretty much from everywhere in Somalia including Somali region of Kenya & Ethiopia.
