NEED HELP? Simple Questions / Basic Beginner’s Help

Welcome to DIY Beauty's monthly question thread!

BEFORE YOUR POST

  1. READ THE RULES: If your question violates the rules, it will be removed and you may be subject to a temporary or permanent ban with no warning, depending on the offense.
  2. READ THE WIKI: It covers all the basics and likely already has your answer. And if you ask something already covered in the wiki, people are unlikely to answer your question anyway.
  3. DO SOME RESEARCH: When you ask questions without having made any effort beforehand, it’s very demotivating for people with the knowledge and skills to give you an answer.

POSTING GUIDELINES

  • Follow the rules - Check if your question is already answered in the wiki
  • Formula help: provide your full detailed formula, which each ingredients with their respective percentage of weight (volumes are allowed for mineral makeup).
  • Duping: provide the full INCI list of ingredients and your own attempt at a formula in percentages of weight for people to critique and correct
  • If you see someone not following the rules, tell them and report their comment to the moderators. It requires no cosmetics knowledge and helps the community retain its level of quality.
  • Refer people to the wiki when appropriate. It requires no cosmetics knowledge and means experienced helpers can spend more time on questions that do require more knowledge. It's also a huge boost of morale for people who answer question if they see everybody, even beginners, pitching in.

If you don’t get an answer in less than a week, do not make a separate post asking the same question. People who can answer your questions don’t necessarily have the time to come here everyday and answer every question, but they do make an effort to at least make sure every legitimate question in this thread is answered when the new one is posted.

I have a very simple question. I wanted to scent coconut oil with an essential oil, so I melted about half a cup of coconut oil and added ten drops each of essential rose and essential lavender to it. It doesn't smell nice at all! What did I do wrong?

Not sure if I misunderstood or if there’s a better option for preservative: making an azelaic acid topical, mixed azeleic powder into propanediol and glycerin over double boiler gentle heat with constant stirring, beautiful clear solution. Removed from heat and continue to stir while cooling, still clear, added liquid germall plus at 0.5% and it became cloudy immediately. Did not appear to be crystallized or true precipitation just cloudy bits throughout… should I have used a different preservative? Since it’s in propylene glycol I thought it would be soluble but maybe I got it wrong

Hello… wondering if anyone can tell me how to fix my first batch of skin cream, made with hydrosol, sweet almond oil and wax… I thought it looked great in the blender, but after pouring in the jars, I’m noticing there is water in the cream that didn’t emulsify. I’m a newbie at this… can I just put it all back in the blender and whip it some more?

Did you use an emulsifier? Wax and water, and wax and oil will separate without one. Wax and oil don't even immediately blend on their own depending on type and ratio.

This is probably a a dumb question, but is there a difference between food grade and cosmetic grade oils for lip balm? And if so, which one would I want to use? Since it’s going on my lips food grade makes sense to me. But also there aren’t food grade oils for everything.

I’m specifically looking at coconut oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, castor oil, mango butter and shea butter

well food grade oils are safe to eat, but they're not always tested or refined for cosmetic stability. cosmetic grade oils are specifically processed and tested for use on skin and lips, so theyre usually the better choice for lip balm.

Are they cosmetic for use around the mouth? You can ask the supplier. Generally if you're buying from a cosmetic supplier and it doesn't say, I would trust them for a lip balm (essential oil not included in this statement).   But if you're buying from Amazon that's a bit different.

, I didn’t want to put this in the ingredients discussion because it’s not a shoutout . I just heard about Plum oil for smoothing and adding shine to hair . Just wondering if anyone here has tried it. I currently use Helichrysum, among other ingredients.

I'm making a cosmetic oil (medium to high viscosity) using beef tallow and other natural oils. Does anyone have experience working with beef tallow and is there any stabilizing ingredients I should include for shelf life? Thanks!

I may have missed this if it was in the wiki/rules/guide.

However, what is safe to use for giving things like body butter or lipstick a smell/flavor? I've saw some recipes mention essential oils, however, I've also read that essential oils are not safe for the body. So, I wasn't sure what's a good way to create a smell that's safe on the skin?

essential oils are not safe to put directly on your skin, they are fine when you use a carrier oil ie. body butter. for the lipstick you could try a juice infused oil

Does anyone ever use metal tins (like that candles come in) for cosmetics storage / packaging? Any reason why you couldn't? Can metal 'leech' into cosmetics or react with your formula?

How to use tea in beauty? Like actual tea and not extracts. I drink a lot of tea and think I could use it for diy beauty.

I've looked up recipes online but I feel like this sub would know better.

Thanks in advance!

You can use the tea as is, depending if you are using the leaves or the steeped. If you are intending to store the steeped tea longer, then you will need antioxidants, chelating agents and preservatives to have better stability for the tea. The concept is more or less the same, just that the stability might be different.

Got it! Thanks

Hi everyone! I am new to most diy beauty and I am hoping that you guys might have some suggestions for any resources for skin care and hair care products that are for people that have skin and scalp issues?

Looking for any books, videos and people that have created content and resources that I should have a good look at.

I am new so it would be good if you have any advice on who gives good info about the different preservatives and stuff that go into products too that is not really complicated to understand.I would love an understanding of what formulations would be good.

(this is more of product question than a chemistry question but) Are more costly face washes formulated with coaservation in mind? I know that you can't look for it via the ingredients list since coasertives can also be used for other things but may not have been formulated to give an effect when washed off, so I'm wondering if there's some way to know if they do or don't based off price, product description on a company website or anything else?
