Modern Art [OC] Spine Piper, 2026, myself

Decided to make my own cover art for an upcoming release after a few years of zero illustrations made. A bit of a weird process: Abobe Illustrator for the base skeletons from refs and drafts to Procreate for inking details to Photoshop for texturing and finishing touches. And I gotta say I forgot how much joy the inking part brings.

The first idea was to create only the cyberflute, but it felt quite empty, so after the course change I just tucked it in a corner not to fully waste hours of designing it.

And yeah I know the spines look like a stack of taco bell logos, don't at me. What do you guys think? Is it creepy enough for a dark fairytale vibe?

Modern Art Resurrection OC 2026

Resurrection

I've been exploring my inner world for some time, and this painting is from a location I've been visiting in my imagination. Murky marshland, graves littering the landscape, an eerie feeling. A familiar visual theme that I first encountered through developing active imagination, an art therapy technique created by Carl Jung. I don't know fully what all of this is about yet, but some images have of course stayed with me.

"Any picture seems very meaningful to me for the place I am in my life right now. "I have been trying to differentiate between who I am myself and what I am supposed to be, and I think a lot of that revolves around family, and expectations, and the shape that you're meant to grow into before you're aware of those things. You get to a point where you're just like: oh wait, I might not want to be that person."

This grave, for instance, I think of as an old self. A me that, in many ways, had to be killed. I see the gravestone burning, not just in celebration of destruction, but as an invocation of that demise's finality; I was laid to rest, in some respects, but I have risen from the grave.

What I like about the image is that the figure doesn't look triumphant. It's outside the grave, staring at it as if a little bit surprised. It's alive, but it doesn't seem to be sure of the hows and whys of it. I like that. Resurrection sounds very poetic and dramatic when we talk about it in the abstract, but I think the reality of becoming someone else is probably rather bewildering. You are leaving something behind with no clear idea of what is to come.

I don't want to impose a tidy reading onto this painting. I'm still wrapping my head around it myself. Perhaps that's the whole point of working with these images at all. They come to me before I find the words to articulate them, and painting allows me to stay with them a while longer.

For now, I think of it as an end to the old me. Not a new, finished up version of myself, not some new and improved me, standing victorious over his old form. Just a guy who's somehow gotten himself out of the grave he dug and is now peering back down at what's left of it.

And scratching your head wondering what is next.

Extremely fun project mixing 3d, images, and 2d work!!! I sculpted the faces then went ahead and uploaded it onto procreate, layered some pngs, then drew textures and details over it!!! Super fun,
