Resources basic question about Pleco

Post image

I looked up 學 in Pleco after seeing it in the Integrated Chinese 1-1 workbook. I thought this workbook was simplified only, so was surprised to see multiple variants of this character.

So my very dumb question about Pleco is:

Does the top line of the screenshot show the simplified character, followed by the traditional in parentheses?

Yes, and you can go into settings to make it the other way around with simplified in parenthesis, or set it to show only one. I recommend having it show both though at least early on, that way you aren't confused trying to find a character without realizing it is the other spelling type-- imagine someone looking for colour everywhere in a dictionary set to American spelling only. Same idea.

Thank you! I am ultimately interested in learning both, so I always appreciate seeing both side by side.

Yes.

And if you switch to traditional, it will show the simplified in Parentheses

● 𭕄 is a component of simplified character 学, not the character "小" (xiǎo).
● 斈 = One of the variants of 學 (学, xué) = 文 + 子
● 学 = A regular-script adaption derived from the cursive script (草書, left ) ▼
● 𰃮 = A simplified form of 𦥯 (xué) — categorized under the radical 冖 (mì); composed of the components 𭕄 + 冖.
● 𦥯 (𰃮) = A place under a roof for teaching and learning
