I moved here with my Dad in high school, hated it, turned 18 and left "for good." Spent the next ten plus years working in IT as a digital nomad several cities and states; Southwest, Midwest, West Coast, and Northern Pacific; then my dad got sick and I moved back, he passed away and by then I also had a two children of my own. I do ok, I work a job that is quite demanding and requires a lot of travel at times but the big perk I can live pretty much anywhere there's WiFi and a decent airport. So for the last twelve years or so back I decided to embrace this city while they grew up.
It's been aggressively OK. I've lived enough places to understand no place is perfect and I both condemn and defend aspects of every place I have lived; traffic, crime, weather, culture. There is simply no perfect place to live. I found the tradeoffs here acceptable the good balanced out the bad--a Goldilocks city. Not too big or too small, not too anything but enough of it at the same time. Most importantly I was slowly able to build a solid friend group of people that have been amazing with everything from childcare to emotional support over the years. Though several have left in recently; everything from retired to Florida to took an amazing job abroad.
So now my last child is graduating.
I watched the city build and grow and genuinely seem to be on the right path the majority of my time back. Granted not having to work here made a huge difference since the local job market didn't really impact me but I still needed an affordable, safe place to raise kids, so I did care about the local culture, economy, and government and it seemed B-/C+ in my opinion conservative but flashes of progressive influence--the way the city decorates downtown for Juneteenth, a mayor that walks in Pride Parades, that's something right?
Anyway, is it time to escape?
