Moderator Update More Mods Wanted - Details Inside ✨

Hello Everyone -

I am looking for some additional mods for this community. Over the last year or so I’ve taken on moderation for a lot of cat communities in an effort to fight the spam and bot problem cat subs are hit with. I’ve stabilized most of these communities and am looking for more partners in each to help with the modding load and ensure the safety of our community culture.

I am asking that new mods be willing to join a private Discord server that I’ve created for the subs I mod. You will be given specific roles and access to the channels dedicated to the sub yous you mod in the group. This is to help with onboarding, training, and general communication.

Some basic tenants of all communities I mod that I expect new mods to be in alignment on:

  • These subs are AI Free, meaning all content posted must be created by the person posting and must not be AI.
  • We have a zero tolerance for participation from spam and bot accounts - this includes NSFW promotion or heavy adult content accounts.
  • Disagreements must be civil no matter who is “in the right”; harassment of community members or mods is not tolerated.
  • Submitted content must be relevant. We do not do “one time exceptions” for content a mod happens to like/want; that is a slippery slope. Consistent enforcement matters for a healthy community.

Some specifics about modding in this community:

  • This is an advice community which means it functions differently than other cat communities. You will be doing a lot more content moderation.
  • Rules are constantly in flux in this community, I have to update them here the most of all my subs to keep the place healthy and safe for cat owners.
  • We get a LOT of product posts and survey requests which are not allowed.

What you’ll be spending most of your time doing in this community:

  • Removing posts or comments that are product ads or survey requests or demo requests, we have a very hard line on advertising.
  • Removing over the line medical advice - both human and pet.
  • Mediating heated disagreements with locking, removals, and bans as necessary.

Before applying to mod:

  • Please take some time to read the sub rules and familiarize yourself with them and ensure you feel comfortable enforcing these rules.
  • Consider how much time you’re able and willing to mod. I don’t expect highly active mods, I can continue taking on the bulk. But if you go “inactive” you will be removed during my quarterly mod maintenance days.

Apply by modmailing me here to start a conversation. You do not need to have prior modding experience but if you don’t or you have little we expect you to be curious about learning new things. You are also welcome to check out other subs I mod and apply to multiples!

Feel free to ask questions publicly below!

Cost effective allergy fel d 1 suppressant

Post image
8 Upvotes

I never thought I would get a cat since my daughter is super allergic however, one chose us about a week ago by getting stuck inside the engine bay of her car. Now we love him and we’ve named him and it looks like we’re going to keep him. I researched and found that there’s a lot of supplements and sprays on the market that neutralize the fel d 1 hormone that causes allergies. Pacagen seems to be the most popular or at least best marketed. It looks like there’s other similar supplements on the market as well that are a bit cheaper. For people who have tried these supplements did they work for you and which brand do you recommend? Pacagen seems to be the most expensive but has great reviews. I want to also get a spray for the furniture and a small area rug.

Stinky new kitten

We just adopted a new kitten and so far we’re just keeping her in our guest room so that she can get acclimated and not be bothered by our dog.

I bought a litter genie thing so that I could clean her litter box and hopefully mitigate the smell from spreading. I clean her box once sometimes twice a day so far. Even though I’m being diligent and she’s confined to the guest room, somehow it still smells in our house!! We have windows open and a fan in the guest room as well.

What in the world can I do?? We’ve had cats before and it never smelled like this before I don’t think. Does anyone have any advice? What non toxic things can I get to absorb the smell??

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Keeping Litter in the Box

I have 4 cats and they love to kick litter literally everywhere. I sweep every day. Idk that they’d use an automatic litter box, but I do think I’m going to get a robot vacuum. What else can I do to keep litter IN the box

Advice for helping a very shy adult rescue cat trust me? She only eats when I’m asleep

I’m currently doing a trial adoption with an adult female cat named Ember, and I’d love some advice from people who have experience with extremely shy or fearful cats.
A little backstory:
Ember was previously in a foster home, where she spent much of her time in a bathroom setup. She also had kittens who were eventually separated from her. From what I understand, she’s not particularly comfortable being handled or picked up, and she’s generally pretty avoidant of people.
I brought her home on October 11, so she’s been with me for a little over two weeks.
Here’s how things have gone so far:
When she first arrived, she stayed inside her carrier for hours and was very reluctant to come out.
I initially kept her in my bedroom to give her a smaller, quieter space to adjust. She’s since started exploring other parts of my apartment.
She has a cat cave, tunnel, scratching toys, window perch, cat tower, and plenty of hiding places.
She uses her litter box consistently and appears to be drinking from her water fountain.
She eats her dry food, but almost exclusively at night after I’ve gone to bed. I can hear her crunching away!
She used to meows or chirp during the night, usually around 3 a.m. but has stopped
She occasionally watches me from her hiding spots or perch, and we’ve exchanged some slow blinks.
She has shown some interest in watching a wand toy move, but she isn’t particularly interested in actively playing yet.
She’s recently started spending time in her cat tower/window perch, which feels like progress!
If I get up or move around, she sometimes retreats, although she doesn’t always sprint away anymore. Sometimes she just walks off.
I’ve been trying to let her set the pace. I don’t grab her, force interactions, or pull her out of hiding. I work from home several days a week, so I spend time quietly working near her without trying to interact. I also try to keep things calm and predictable.
Here’s where I could use some advice:
I’m hoping to help her feel more comfortable around me, especially while I’m awake.
Does anyone have recommendations for:
Irresistible treats? Is there a particular lickable treat, food, or snack that helped you win over a very cautious cat? I’d love to find something she’d be willing to eat while I’m nearby.
Building trust with a fearful adult cat? Are there any techniques that worked especially well for you?
Encouraging daytime eating or activity? Should I just let her continue eating at night, or is there a gentle way to help her become more comfortable eating when I’m around?
Recognizing progress? For those who adopted extremely shy cats, how long did it take before they started voluntarily approaching you?
My biggest concern is that this is technically a trial adoption, and I have about another week and a half to determine whether we’ll make it permanent.
I absolutely understand that trust can take weeks or months, and I don’t expect her to magically become affectionate overnight. I’m just hoping to see enough progress to know that she’s settling in and that this could be a good long-term home for her.
She’s never been aggressive toward me. She just seems very unsure of humans, and I really want to give her a chance.
I’d especially love to hear success stories from anyone who adopted a cat who initially wanted absolutely nothing to do with them.
Thanks in advance for any advice! I’m rooting for this little lady, and I’d really like her to feel safe and happy here. 🐈‍⬛

My kitten keeps eating the litter

My 8 week old kitten keeps eating the litter (paper) and throwing it out of the tray, I think she thinks it’s a game cause I say no then put it back in, but she went this morning in the tray for the first time since I brought her home yesterday so I think she peed behind the sofa unfortunately, how else can I train her, she’s in the living room only for right now and I’m hemiplegic just for reference if that’s anything to go by, she’s might have worms I’m not sure I know if they do they eat everything but she’s got her first vet appointment tomorrow. Just I really need advice on how to litter train her please

Litter issue all of a sudden

So i usually have plastic litter boxes and have never really had issues with them other than they get scratches in them.

I use a mix of special kitty light weight scent free with hard ball (because hard ball is expensive alone but 75% SK and 25% HB still clumps hard balls) and havent had issues for basically since hard ball came out.

Now I decided to switch to Stainless steel litter box because it doesnt scratch and easier to clean thinking its gonna be great

WRONG.

The litter stopped clumping?! Its like scooping wet sand!!! What the heck has happened?! Also the wet litter cakes onto the stainless steel HARD like you have to scrape it to get it off.

What the heck is happening? Some kind of weird reaction?

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 ExquisiCat sifting litterbox lid?

I just got a cat, and his shelter had him using the pine pellet litter, so I bought the same stuff to make the transition easier on him. I find myself quite enjoying the litter, and he's doing really well with it, so I'm considering sticking with it unless something changes. I bought the ExquisiCat sifting litter box, which so far seems to work great, but I'd love to be able to put a lid on it. I know they don't make a lid for this specific box, but are there any lids that work with it from another brand?

Lavender Kitty Litter?

Has anybody heard of and or used the Fukumaru brand Lavender Tofu litter? I have used tofu litter for my girl for a while now but i ignorantly purchased the lavender tofu litter and read lavender is toxic to cats after the fact. Luckily I hadn’t used it. How could this NOT be toxic?

Litter Boxes

I’ve been reading steel boxes are best at eliminating odors. I have the plastic ones and they smell so bad shortly after fulling cleaning. I use arm and hammer multicat litter which worked well at first but doesn’t seem to be cutting it anymore. Any recommendations on boxes and litter? I have 2 cats.

For those who have tried both tofu and pea husk litters- how do they compare? Which do you prefer?

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Litter Box Training for adult cat. Transitioned from outside to inside cat.

Hi. I’ve had my cat for a little over 2 years. He showed up on my front porch one day & he stayed. For a very long time he wanted to be outside- so that’s where he lived. I even got him a cat house. Now, he has learned that inside life is better. Problem: he doesn’t use a cat box. When I got him a cat box he played in it or slept in it. He did not urinate in it once. I can’t find any evidence that he urinates or goes #2 inside the house. He WILL meow to go outside to go do his business.
He hangs out inside as much as he wants.
I make a joke that he’s a house trained cat but I don’t want the joke to be on me when he starts peeing everywhere inside. He IS fixed.
What do I do?!

Kitten refusing to use litter box

We have an 11 week old kitten that we’ve had 3 weeks. The little one was with mom and littermate siblings prior to coming to us and we have 4 other cats in our house ranging in age from 1 year old to 10 years old. I’ve potty-trained kittens before so this is not my first time, but this little one seems firmly insistent on using our two bathtubs as his spot for all bathroom activities vs. using a litter box. Things we have tried so far: extra litter boxes that are just for the kitten with regular litter, placed in the bathtubs. We have also tried Dr. Elsey’s Kitten Attract litter in the extra litter boxes that are in the bathtubs, and we have also put Dr. Elsey’s Attract additive in the general population litter boxes. We have 6 general population litter boxes in the house and they all get scooped daily.

The family we adopted the kitten from said that the baby was having trouble getting the hang of using a litter box, so this is not an issue of the kitten coming into our home. Kitten went to the vet on day 2 of us having him and he was given a clean bill of health. I’m at a bit of a loss of what my family and I can try next? What would you try?

Getting Cat Urine Smell out of Hardwood Floors

I’m desperate for advice on how to get cat urine smell out of hardwood floors.

My cat has been urinating in a specific spot by the front door as she has had ongoing beef with a neighbourhood cat that lives up the road. As a result my cat has been marking by the front door. I’ve tried everything to get rid of the actual smell (enzyme cleaners, vinegar & bicarb) the smell only goes away for a little while before coming straight back. I’ve been able to get the urination under control by closing the hallway door and restricting access to the area but the smell is still there. I rent and my landlord doesn’t know I have a cat in the house so it’s really important that I get rid of the overwhelming smell.

Any advice on how to actually eliminate the odor? The floors are hardwood and ripping up the floors are not an option due to renting.

Any advice on minimising urination outside of the litter box would be helpful as well as I’ve tried lots of things that don’t seem to completely eliminate the issue.

My cat only pees outside litter box

My furry bestie Franklyn. Has developed a new behavior that has been going on for two months now: she only pees on the couch and poops in her litter box. I have tried everything. We currently have an old shower curtain on the couch, and that is her new favorite spot to pee. I clean her litter box every day, and she only pees on the couch— and I’m not talking a little tingle-tingle; I am talking full bladder release.
Have you taken her to the vet? Yes, I have, and they said there’s nothing wrong with her internally— that she is healthy, so healthy that she is slightly overweight. She’s a fat girl, natural BBL. At one point, we had a couch cover that she peed on so much that we put it on the floor for a little bit till we could wash it, and she destroyed that thing with her pee. She peed on it every single day.
I know that cats don’t like a messy environment—joke’s on you. I have chronic OCD. The house is spic and span. Clean every day.
We’ve tried deterrents, natural and store-bought. We’ve tried enzyme breakdown sprays. I also got her a whole new litter. Box changed her litter back to her regular litter that I was using before the peeing commenced her litter box has continued to stay in the same place for her whole life existence. And is deep cleaned at the end of the week.
She doesn’t care; she pees on the same couch over and over again. Behavior-wise, she is an angel. She is so kind, so nice when you’re sad. She makes biscuits on your tummy and rubs her face against your face. She loves to talk; she loves watching Gilmore Girls and sleeping on my lap.
But she pees on the couch. I have scrubbed the couch with cleaning vinegar, enzyme remover, everything, repeatedly, over and over again. I do currently live with my mom. She wants to get rid of my chunky rat. That is not an option. Please help, please, please, begging on my hands and knees, please. #NegativeBehavior #Cat #GreyTabby #PeeOnCouch #NeedHelp #JustAGirl.

New cat owner!

Hello everyone! My husband and I are looking into adopting a cat for our first year anniversary. Before marrying we each had dogs and I also had rabbits so we do have experience with those pets but this is going to be our first cat ever. I have a friend with cats and she told me a lot of stuff we are gonna need but I still wanted to ask here.

What would you recommend me buying for our cat? Note that this cat is a baby. Stuff like bedding, toys, litter, etc.

Thank you all in advance!!!

New babies and they deserve the best. We’ve never used an auto litter box for our past cats. Are they really worth the initial investment cost?

Dr Elsey litter and cat attract for outside kitty transition to inside

I have a kitty that was thrown out of his house because the owner died. It showed up in our neighborhood 6 months ago and adopted us. Last month I had him neutered. He wants to be an inside kitty, but I couldn’t transition to that until I found out about his litterbox situation.
I bought a new litterbox and Dr Elsey Ultra litter and cat attract.
He essentially ignores it and will sit at the door until I let him out. I don’t mind that he is inside/outside but winter’s coming and would like peace of mind that he is safe during our Midwest winters.
Anyone have any suggestions ?
From other comments, I thought I had found the best solution.
Thankyou!

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 I need help getting rid of the cat pee/smell.. PLEASE!

I bought a Thereye automatic cat litter box. So far it has cursed me. While i was away for two days, it shut itself closed and didn't open up. Great! My cat with nowhere else to go, pissed on a plastic suit covering that was on my floor and shit on my bed.

My room now smells like cat pee.

My floor is all carpet, btw

What I've done:

I had two thick blankets on my bed, plus a sheet, and another blanket. The poop was on the top layer. I put those in the wash and double washed the top layer. I think that part is good now, i think

I didn't think any piss got on the floor, but it must have because it smells. It also smells in a different area of my room too. My nose has been stuffy for like two weeks which makes it even harder to pinpoint the smell, lmao just my luck.

I took miracle spray and sprayed the spots i think it might have hit and used paper towels to scrub.

A few days later I poured water on the spots, tried to get it with towels and paper towels which is pretty unsuccessful. I then used Anti icky poo and poured it over the spots like drenched it. I also used a cheap blacklight to try and find where the spots were. But it's hard for me to tell which is actually piss and not.

It still smells. Although maybe less? Its hard to tell. It's been like over a week now

I also picked up some of my clothes and they smell like piss now. Can i just wash them?

Here are photos with a blacklight in my room, ive numbered the photos. Which photos/parts look like cat piss?

I've also heard to use vinegar. What should I be doing? Can I have help please? Thank youT

Tips and Tricks 💡 Added a new pet, cats aren’t allowed but we need air!

So the long and short of it is that my wife has invested in a bird, conure to be specific. Because we do spend a lot of time in our office, we have her in that room with our desks and computers and all, filter on the way, but we noticed that it’s been getting stiflingly hot in there. Not even a plain open window could do the job.

We normally kept the door to the office open, and the cats would roam free, but obviously we can’t do that anymore because we don’t want them to get at the bird before the scents have a chance to transfer and we have the chance to safely introduce them.

I’ve seen some things about screen doors, or these magnetic clasping mesh doors, but both cats have been known to climb and claw at any mesh doors, and with one having Maine coon in it, and the other having Norwegian forest cat, they are hefty little ones that will try and climb with all their effort, or claw through.

So I come asking for help, and hope someone here has some advice for what we can use?
