Proper comment etiquette

Firstly, to properly understand our approach on comment etiquette, an understanding of our goal and vision for this sub is required.

The purpose of this sub is found in the word, apologetics. It comes from the Greek word meaning defense. Just like how an individual can be put on trial and then must explain his actions, same for faith.

The purpose of apologetics is not to argue about the validity, or if the faith is true. Rather, it’s meant to explain WHY an individual or even the faith itself believes something.

There’s a difference between proving the real presence and explaining why I believe in the real presence. There’s a difference between proving the papacy, and explaining why I believe that Christ formed the office of Pope.

With that in mind, what ettiequte is expected for the comments from non-Catholics? Disagreement is permitted, but it needs to be charitable and with the spirit of gaining understanding of the Catholic perspective. Not an attempt to disprove Catholicism.

Example

Accepted comment: “considering the statement of Jesus on the flesh being to no avail, how does the church reconcile that with the real presence?”

Not accepted: ya’ll are wrong because Jesus said the flesh is to no avail.

A good rule of thumb, if it’s phrased as a question, it’s good etiquette for this sub. If it’s a declaration or a statement, probably not good etiquette.

If you want to debate the validity or truth of Catholicism, there’s r/debateacatholic r/debatereligion and r/debateachristian

Think of this sub as a library/encyclopedia of Catholic beliefs. This is about WHAT Catholic’s believe and why. Not if they are true.

A Write-Up Defending the Traditions of the Catholic Church Is not practicing NFP while married through the church a mortal sin?

Is not practicing NFP while married through the church a mortal sin? For example if a couple is using coitus interruptus, that’s technically not artificial birth control but I do understand that it prohibits the completion of the unitive act. However, if a couple wishes to connect within their marriage to strengthen their bond during a turmoils time and doesn’t currently have the resources to practice NFP (but is working towards enrolling with an instructor once they have the means to do so in the near future) would that be permissible? Also to note, wife is healing from a medical condition that requires her to not get pregnant at this moment, would they be not allowed to receive communion for this alone? If it is a mortal sin, which commandment is being broken? Thanks for the discussion!

A Write-Up Defending the Traditions of the Catholic Church How to do apologetics

In order for catholic (and not generic christian) apologetics to work we need to understand a critical piece of the puzzle "Truth"

What is Truth, is it something that gives you instant dopamine hits or makes you feel alleluia everytime you hear it, no that is just divine consolation.

Truth is something that is uncomfortable, at times complex for most people and requires divine illumination to really be at peace with.

Nowadays we are trying to conquer the world outside when first of all we should look inwards, what are we doing to grow in holiness, grow out of tepidity, grow in charity towards our neighbor, humility, prayer life?

If nothing of this sort is growing in you, supernatural charity has found an obex in you, which is not letting the living water well up in you also known as sanctifying grace.

A good confession, worthy communion and praying to the right saints at the right time and with right amount of veneration is required to truly find resolution of supernatural hurdles.

To truly progress in apologetics there are tons of saints who specialized in it, there are many more yet who were really great in scripture like St. Thomas

We should strive to grow in love (charity), faith and hope.

Unless that happens you won't find the faith compelling and let alone fullness of truth.

Jesus says not everyone should be a teacher and the ones who are will be accounted to a higher standard, which to some extent applies to anyone defending the faith.

Ideally the sacrament of confirmation gives us the strength to pursue such vocations but due to sin, tepidity and lack of a will to build heroic virtue we miss the glorious opportunities God gives us.

It would be imperative to say that catholic church needs apologetics but they should to some extend strive to be saints, venerables or blessed which happens only when we dilligently in every area of our life go all out and let the Lord work freely not clinging to anything with our free will but surrending it to his work out of love.

Are you strictly required to surrender your free will : no

But to be effective at what you do it would be a requirement

Culture and Catholicism Why did early Christian art show Jesus clean-shaven, while later icons depict Him with long hair and a beard? Did Greco-Roman art influence these images, what did the Church Fathers say, and is the traditional image truly the most historically accurate?

Culture and Catholicism God and logic

Hello everyone, i got a lot of question.

What is the correlation between God and logic?

Is God a thing that can fit into logic, since it was created by Him? Or God is an external being in relation with logic, since logic is a thing of this world and God isn't? Is it correct to say that God is outside of logic? Considering His pure essence, i mean.

Can we find God in logic? And if yes, can we find logic in God? And if yes, how often? Is it correct to say that the Trinity is outside of logic?

If a thing is outside of logic, can it still be true, real, reliable...?

A Write-Up Defending Mary Can someone help me feel better about the title "Mother of God" vs "mother of Jesus" Spoiler

First off, i dont hold any sort of protestant view that Mary is just a vessel and just a random woman that was used to carry our saviour for 9 months. I beleive she is sinless and all of the Catholic teachings. It actually enrages me when I see youtube videos of her being minimized or plain disrespected. I love Mary and have had a scapular on my neck most of my life until losing it a few months ago...

My issue may be a asperger/autism thing where im thinking very literal or this term "Mother of God". Everytime I say it during prayer or hear someone say it, a brief thought flashes in my mind and if I say to myself "Mother of Christ/Mother of Jesus" and then ill comtinue praying.

What I always divert to is pretty simple. God existed before anything and anyone so he cant have a mother. Jesus Christ, the God man, has a mother because she birthed his human flesh , indeed! And Jesus is indeed God, one part of the Trinity, but Christ existed before Mary as his own words say undoubtedly "before Abraham was, I am". Anyone have a thought that may help me get past this? I domt like arguing witj myself everyday about this. I dont like having the feelings of being stuck somewhere between a protestant and a Catholic becuase its definitelynnot it. Its just a techincal thing with the verbiage I think. I have talked to my kids about it, but no one else really. Thank you

Can someone help me feel better about the title "Mother of God" vs "mother of Jesus"

Culture and Catholicism Hypothetically, could an evangelical church consecrate the Eucharist by "intending to do as the Church does"?

Culture and Catholicism Why are people so anti-catholic?

People are profoundly anti-catholic, and it seems people have some hatred for catholics and christians that dont seem to translate to other major religions (Islam, Buddhism, judaism). And yes, I am aware that there are anti-semites and islamophobes. But my point being especially in the west there is a major anti catholic stance from both liberals and conservatives alike
