independent trip to Cape Verde (Santo Antão/ Boa Vista)

Hey everyone!
My girlfriend and I are planning an approximately 14-day independent trip to Cape Verde in late March/early April 2027. We’ll most likely arrive on São Vicente and fly home from Sal. Our plan is to start with hiking on Santo Antão, then explore Boa Vista for nature and beaches, and spend the final 1–2 days on Sal.
We’d love to hear your experiences and recommendations!
Inter-island travel: How easy and reliable is it to get from Santo Antão via São Vicente to Boa Vista? What are the domestic flights like in terms of price and reliability?
Santo Antão accommodation: Which area would you recommend staying in for the best access to hiking trails and exploring the island independently?
Boa Vista 4x4 rental: Has anyone rented a 4x4 and explored the island independently? Are the dirt and sand tracks manageable, or would you recommend guided tours instead?
Whale watching: Has anyone been whale watching in late March/early April? Which island and tour operator would you recommend?
General tips: Any advice on accommodation, transport, must-see places, hidden gems, local food, or things you wish you’d known before visiting?
We prefer independent travel and outdoor activities over all-inclusive resorts, so any personal experiences or practical tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Travelling to Sal for NYE with our 2 year old.

Will there be fireworks in the main area?

Also any tips for Sal and places to see + things to do?
