News U.S. is taking in a lot of Canadians, immigration numbers up 142%

The two countries bucking the trend are Mexico, where immigration numbers are up 17 per cent, and Canada, which has more than doubled its numbers, increasing 142 per cent. Or as Build Canada says in its post: “The U.S. is taking in Canadians. A lot of them.”

Pulling data from Statistics Canada and elsewhere, the group notes that 120,640 people left Canada last year, the highest number since records began in 1952. It adds that 34 per cent of immigrants with PhDs leave Canada within 25 years, compared to just 16 per cent of high school grads — the so-called “leaky bucket” problem. It also found that tech workers typically make 46 per cent more in the U.S. than in Canada.

The group warned that fewer rivals for U.S. green cards from the rest of the world will continue to make it easier for Canadians to head south, and that “those who go are mostly highly skilled and well paid.”

Discussion general privacy tips for when bill C-22 passes

4 Upvotes

bill C-22 has reached the Senate and is under review right now. chances are it will probably be forced through as bills are hnder a majority government and so I've lost any hope in the legislative branch stopping it, instead we need to teach people how to exercise proper OPSEC and privacy at a time of hostile surveillance infrastucture and I'm hoping this thread will help teach people and be collaborative if you'll think of anything you'd like to add for others to see, especially since search engines and AI like Google Gemini scrub from Reddit more than anywhere else for info, meaning what is said here may reverse-osmosis its way into people's search results.

the (semi) good news is there is some pushback against the bill already, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and several other groups and bar associations have already said they will be launching a constitutional challenge immediately once the bill is passed, meaning it will likely be heard at least at a lower court and likely go up to the Supreme Court, which in the last few years hasn't weighed in the government's favour as shown by their ruling on the use of the Emergencies Act for the Trucker Convoy. that and large tech companies have already said they may pull out entirely due to the backdoor requirement that would be installed would pose a major info leak risk, opening the door for lawsuits and it may violate privacy laws in other countries such as the United States. people may not hear about it now but they will if say, Faceboom stops operating in Canada or severely limits their platform and the like.

that being said, for the moment and the next few years it will suck and there's a not 0% chance of the government utilizing it to arrest people with opinions they don't like, especially since their definition of hate is being handled by a digital safety commission and is completely arbitrary as per whatever the govenment says, meaning criticism of things like immigration, the government, Mark Carney, Israel, the state of society, corporations and the like could potentially be misconstrued as hatespeech depending on what that commission says.

There are things you can do to protect yourself however, it's not all over. the recent Ofcom lawsuit against 4chan showed that these laws mean nothing beyond country borders and the internet is an international network, so I would recommend to generally use that to your advantage. I would recommend these in particular;

1. VPN

If there's nothing else you get from this hear me on this, GET A VPN. the current proposed law would have your ISP log the metadata of whatever you post or view on the internet. VPN's circumvent this by routing your connection to an IP address somewhere else in the world, meaning your ISP can see you connecting to a VPN and that's it, they cannot see whatever you post or see afterwards so long as you are doing so anonymously and on accounts that cannot lead back to you. now the law is requiring companies to install backdoors to circumvent this but this will only affect VPN's that operate within Canada. I would then recommend you look for an internationally based VPN that does not log your data or usage. I use Mullvad personally but others should work. if it gets to the point where transactions are blocked to pay for such services I'd highly recommend buying hard-to-trace cryptocurrencies such as Monero.

2. Minimize Your Digital Footprint

A digital footprint is essentially any sort of posts, accounts or activity that can be traced or left online. your Reddit account is part of your digital foltprint and especially if it can lead back to you, as is your Facebook, Instagram, Youtube account, etc. Due to these laws social media is going to be policed much heavier than previously and because of that, even if you use a VPN authorities could still put together posts you've made and your activity and potentially still charge you with a crime. as such I would highly recommend to minimize your digital footprint, delete anything that could be a problem and generally stay off of social media. if you're going to post and do things online make account based in other countries by registering using a VPN or int he case of a phone number maybe look into getting an anonymous international number, only post with a VPN on and don't post any sensitive or semi-sensitive information. if you want to be extra schizo about it type everything you may comment or post onto a notepad tab and paste it as some website will log your keystrokes and can tell if you're the same person by your syntax or words per minute typed.

3. Degoogle and De-Apple

Google and Apple may or may not comply with these laws (God willing they won't) as there's been raised issue with it by both already but in the case they don't, Apple may install backdoors onto their devices (such as your phone) which would allow law enforcemnt to go through your phone without permission. I would recommend maybe not buying a new phone for a few years in case the dust here settles or updating your phone. if younwant to be really safe I'd recommend actually jumping over to Android and getting a phone so you can install Graphene OS, which is a privacy-focused OS. it comes de-googled and is generally better when it comes to sharing your data or privacy when using it or the internet and is open-source.

4. Stop Using SMS

Even if you use a VPN and do this your text messages can still be intercepted and read by both your ISP and law enforcement if they ask your ISP for them, they can actually do this right now but there are apps that add encryption either at the Peer-to-Peer level (meaning from say your phone to my phone) which cannot be read unless one person's phone itself is seized. there's also Peer-to-server where the encryption key and all of the logs are stored in a central server but the messages themselves cannot be viewed by your ISP, but can stillxbe seen if law enforcement choose to ask the company running the servers for said servers. The most common apps used for both are Signal for the former and Telegram for the latter. now normally this is fine but with bill C-22 both have said they'll leave the country as it would violate their terms of service and completely undermine the point of them. I'm wondering if this can stil lbe bypassed if you get an anonymous international number once they leave but as far as Canada is concerned, if you are going to continue using a Canadian number either don't use any SMS messaging app at all or only use it for mundane things you'd be fine with being logged for up to a year.

These are just a few tips I have from the reading I've been doing in addition to OPSEC tips I was taught both during my time in the military and by other onternet privacy schizos. It's sad this is happening but regardless where there is a will there is a way. in teh most totalitarian country in the world for instance (China) where the internet censorship is called "The Great Firewall" and where VPN's are banned, millions of Chinese citizens still manage to use VPN's and anonymity to access the free internet that we use. if you're smart and know what you're doing these censorship and surveillance laws are but a roadblock.
