THE RESULTS ARE IN! r/CanadianCoins will continue to allow posts with/about banknotes and paper money.

Hey all,

Thanks for voicing your opinion and/or voting in the recent poll.

The most votes were for the option to continue to allow posts with/about banknotes and paper money in r/CanadianCoins. And that's what we'll do!

Here's a link to the poll, for reference.

The "allows" had about 1/3 of the total votes -- not a majority by any means, but more votes than the other options. So while this result will please some of you, it won't please everyone.

During the opinion-gathering and voting, there were concerns expressed about the number of low-effort "what's this worth" posts in here, specifically for banknotes -- although we do get a lot of those for coins, as well.

Going forward, the mod team will try to more actively address these posts by directing posters to our pinned "GENERAL INFO POST" and/or to coinsandcanada.com , and perhaps remove them with greater frequency. Of course, users should feel empowered to refer posters to these resources as well.

Thanks again for speaking up and chiming in to the conversation!

- your mod team

GENERAL INFO POST. PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING.

This post will contain general information about Canadian coinage for new and current users. I'm posting this to help cut down on the 'what is this/what's the value posts'. These posts won't be banned but I encourage you to use these resources to try and find an answer before posting. If you have a reliable resource that I haven't listed but you think could be useful please feel free to put it in the comments.

General information: -Circulation silver was minted up to and partly including 1968. To differentiate between silver and not silver a simple magnet test is easiest to tell. Not sticking? It's silver.

-Most commemorative coins especially quarters are generally worth face value unless they are gem uncirculated or are of a certain variety. A noted exception is the 1973 large bust mountie quarter.

-Pennies were 98-99% copper up until 1996 and after that it's either zinc plated with copper and from about 03-04 onward copper plated steel. Are the copper pennies worth more than face? Yes, about 3-4 cents copper prices depending. Can you get the copper value when it's time to sell? Maybe, you can't sell copper pennies for scrap (illegal) and finding a buyer is going to be tricky because of the quantities involved with a sale worth any notable amount.

In my opinion the best general resource for anything Canadian regarding coins and banknotes. I use this on a regular basis for both prices and errors/varieties to curate my own collection.

Found this recently and think this would be useful too.

Minting numbers

Also regarding buying and selling it will still be hard banned here but a new sub named r/coinsalescanada is open. It is still new and doesn't have many members but it could become a spot for buying/selling Canadian coinage. Please note we are NOT affiliated with that sub and it is a use at your own risk kind of deal, use standard practices and precautions when buying and selling there.

One last thing, I want to put it to a vote to allow banknotes posts. I can't find any specific subs that are Canadian banknote themed and was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this. I know enough about Canadian banknotes to properly moderate such posts.

If you have any further questions or suggestions drop it in the comments or reach us by mod mail.

Update: As of May 6/25 pictures are allowed in the comments. Please don't abuse this.

I was given these by my mom. Just curious if they're worth anything other than their weight in silver?

This is why I love coin roll hunting. Finding things I've never seen or heard about. After some research, this is one, of a three coin NIFC set in 2019 from the Dinosaurs of Canada Series. 100,000 made in total. Pretty cool find!

Experiences with roll hunting?

I want to hear people's thoughts. What were the institutions you decided to purchase bankrolls from? What were your best and worst experiences with certain financial institutions? What are your recommendations? My local branch was very friendly, and they let me order two hundred dollars in nickels.

The CIBC in a town forty five minutes away, let me buy a roll of loonies and a roll of quarters in the same day without an account. The teller also told me that because I was under twenty five I would get a free checking account until i'm twenty five, so I decided to sign up for that. My least favorite place to deal with was Scotia bank

I get it. Most institutions need an account, but the teller told me they didn't deal with cash, even though people were making deposits in other lanes around me. So I decided unless I get an account there. I'm gonna have to go elsewhere. The whole local branch just had this sort of 'what do you want?' vibe. For any one wondering, my local branch was an affinity. Credit union.

One last addition to my post, this doesn't have to be relegated to Canadian banks. Just purchasing coins in general. I looked at the statistics, and there were some users from Germany, so I'm curious how roll hunting goes there as well. do they use the euro in germany, or is it a different currency?

I turned the St George design from the sovereign into a coin display

Hi all,

Thought the sovereign collectors here might enjoy this!

I made this St George and the Dragon figurine based on Benedetto Pistrucci’s design, the same one found on the sovereigns struck in Ottawa between 1908 and 1919.

There’s a surprising amount of detail packed into that small design when you start turning it into a freestanding figure. I tried to keep it as close to the coin as possible, especially the positions of St George, the horse and the dragon.

This is the gold-coloured version, pictured with my books and coin display. I also added a coin mount beside St George so the coin can sit alongside its design in 3D. Still on the hunt for an Ottawa Sovereign to add next to it.

Working on it definitely made me appreciate how much Pistrucci managed to fit onto a sovereign!

Anyone here collect the Ottawa “C” mint sovereigns? Would love to see yours :)

Edit: The figurine is made out of a type of bioplastic called PLA. I use this material in my 3d printer, then I spray-paint the finished products in either chrome gold or silver, or leave it in the "natural" colors of the PLA which are shades of white

These were minted to commemorate the 450th anniversary of Jacques Cartier's landing in Gaspe. Minted in Nickel which was the standard for 1968-1986. There was also a standard voyageur Nickel dollar minted in 1984 alongside the commemorative coin.

Weird Coins

Post image
• Upvotes

So asked the Teller at the bank to save any weird coins for me that she see’s, so today I go in and she says “I know you don’t like buying uncirculated coins but these ones are different”!
When I told her I didn’t want uncirculated rolls I meant quarters and dimes because they would have silver or anything different like that, so now she understands that if it’s still uncirculated and different I’ll take any uncirculated denomination of coin

Don't have much experience with 5 cent pieces. Photos online lead me to believe it's a large date.

Deadpool on a coin? Did not expect that. At least he's Canadian, I guess. Although, America did have a Superman coin a while back...

STARTING my collection

Need some advice also sorry for the grammar mistake

I’m working in a restaurant right now, and about a week ago I’ve got a sort of fascination about money after seeing some cool graphic on 1$ coin and also old 25 cents, before that I wouldn’t pay much attention to it, but now I want to start a collection I already bought a binder for it,but I don’t know how I should go about it.Should I try to collect every date of every type of coin and had another part dedicated to special graphic?
